Request for assist from new Patron wombatsan:
-----------------snip---------------------

I hope there are some STW diehards out there that might remember how to sort out my problem - every time I try to storm a castle in STW v1.12, the game crashes to the desktop. I can choose the weather OK, but as soon as the camera starts to pan towards the Castle, boom the game is gone.
I feel like I'm missing out on an important part of the game, never having the chance to storm a castle dammit.
I'm running XP on a 2Gz P4 with 512MB of ram and heaps of VM and HD space...
I've searched the net, and the only place I found someone with same problem was a post on the Apothecary, but with no replies, and I'm not even allowed to post there.
I have a feeling that this is a known issue though - ideas anyone?
------------------
I should add that I have a Radeon 8500 AIW video card with the very latest Catalyst drivers.
I'm a latecomer to STW, but already hooked - might move on to MTW when I've played this one thru.
I wonder if my problem occurs with MI or WE?

i don't know much about too technical parts of the game, i've had this once too, but not everytime, maybe it was a coincedence, maybe not.

luckily it's only with storming castles, that isn't so important as normal battles!

good luck in reparing the game!

I'm not sure what screen resolution you are using in battle, but try lowering it. The castle represents added textures, and maybe the video card is running out of texture memory. You could also try changing the AGP apeture which affects the memory available for textures or if it's a PCI card there is a setting for PCI memory as well.

I have this problem too, but only on my Little Lady's laptop. Laptop vendors are the ones who deal with the drivers for laptop videocards, not the videocard maker. (Some stupid reasons, basically each laptop requires a slightly different architecture to its videocard, so the vidcard makers tell the laptop makers "here, you pay us a cut rate, and we send you the plans for the vidcards, and you figure out how to make it fit." Yes, I'm simplifying greatly.) Laptop vendors are notoriously slow at updating their vidcard drivers, if ever. Since her laptop and the desktop have the same card, just in a different format, that's where my problem prolly lies. I really just save before storming and try for a foggy day. For some reason, it's just the initial "swoop" of the camera during setup that crashes it, and that's only if the camera swoops and sees the castle. If it can't, EG due to fog, then I'm OK even when I march up to the castle and swoop the camera around manually.

I had the same problem. I believe it is something to do with v1.12 as before I graduated to Mongol Invasion I had never attacked a castle without it crashing. Same PC/drivers + MI and now I can attack castles...
