The online version is the revised version not the 50th anniversary or original
You can play it for free against AI opponents although the AI won't sport much of a challenge in most cases. The AI won't attack your fleets if it has 1 single destroyer(or stronger ship) in it and the rest transports, they only attack unescorted transports even if they have 10 fighters and you only 2 ships in a fleet. The Russian and German AI isn't too bad and that's really where the only real challenge is because they'll relentlessly fight a land war.
I'd say the AI is about the same as the 1998 computer release version
For a one time fee you can play human opponents
Anyways I've ignored axis & allies for a while until I discovered the new rules and additions plus the redesigned map.
New units and changes
the chart also shows the stats up to the most current version and may be changed with August 2009 release
