View Full Version : Gameroom Rock/Scissors/Paper tournament [Concluded]

Pretty simple really. I create the one-on-one matchup, each participant sends me a PM saying which one they pick. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock. If both people send me the same choice, they PM me again. If they send me the same choice again, then the game is a tie. However, in the knockout round, games will go on for as long as necessary.
Tournament structure will be a single round robin which will determine seeding. The knockout round will be your standard seeded ladder structure. In the round robin, players get 1 point for a win, 0 points for a loss, and 0.5 points for a tie.
If this goes well, I may expand things for future tournaments. For now, we'll have 8 contestants. Happy WIFOMing!

Day 1 results
And the crowd is gathered in the stadium. The vendors are active, selling programs, popcorn, and carbonated drinks of choice. There is a lively buzz which gradually heightens as the match draws closer to commencement. However, this quickly falls off once the referee signals for quiet. Upon getting confirmation from all contestants, he raises his hand in the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
Andres, true to his promise, throws Scissors. Sigurd, testing to see whether Andres would hold to his promise, throws Rock and smirks upon seeing Andres's paper. "Easiest win I ever had," he says. "Pah," Andres replies, "I'm just setting myself up for later rounds."
Sigurd defeats Andres
pevergreen and Beefy187 both throw Paper, grinning as they see they have matched each other. On the second throw, however, things become different. Beefy, deciding to be aggressive in this early match, throws Rock. pever, however, remains conservative and capitalizes off of Beefy's risky change, throwing Paper again and winning the day.
pevergreen defeats Beefy187
Warmaster Horus and Death is Yonder eye each other before throwing down. These two not knowing each other very well, they expect nothing. This is the real wild-card match of the first round. Horus throws Paper and looks up at his opponent, who is grinning. Death is Yonder has thrown Scissors.
Death is Yonder defeats Warmaster Horus
CountArach and atheotes both go with Rock on their first throw, sticking with an old reliable choice. The crowd gasps in pleasure at seeing this second draw of the day. As everyone knows, the psychological warfare in Rocks/Scissors/Paper ratchets up upon a second throw. After a minute of such staring, the two throw down... both staying conservative and sticking with Rock.

Day 2 results
After an exciting an interesting Day 1, the stadium is filled to bursting point once again with the crowd waiting for the day's matchups. This round does not promise to disappoint with several tough showdowns looming. The referee walks out to a myriad of cheers, but the crowd quickly goes quiet as he raises his hand in the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
Andres and Beefy187 stare at each other a minute before throwing down. Beefy, thinking Andres would break his promise and throw Rock, thus defeating anyone who would believe Andres would stay true, throws Paper. However, to the gasp of the crowd, Andres also throws Paper, trying to be one step ahead. Upon the second throwdown, both people grin as their choices are both revealed to be Rock.
Andres and Beefy187 draw
Sigurd, fresh off an easy victory against Andres, decides to throw Scissors against the winless Warmaster Horus, evidently hoping that Horus throws Paper again. However, he has fallen into the Warmaster's trap. Horus, banking on Sigurd sticking with familiarity, has thrown Rock.
Warmaster Horus defeats Sigurd
pevergreen and CountArach, having both gotten into a tie the previous round, do so again with both of them throwing Rock. pever, having won the second throw last round by sticking with his original choice, throws Rock again. CA meanwhile, hoping for something more than another draw after sticking with his previous choice the second throw last round, diverts from course and throws Scissors. pevergreen has once again triumphed by doing the same thing in a tie. CA is disgusted.
pevergreen defeats CountArach
atheotes, fresh off his tie with CountArach the previous day, looks for something quicker this round and throws Scissors. He achieves his wish as Death is Yonder, who had triumphed yesterday because of Scissors, thinks a little too hard and throws Paper.
atheotes defeats Death is Yonder
With the second day's results in, the one thing that becomes clear is that this is going to be a very tight tournament. Out of all of the contestants, pevergreen is the only one that has taken both of his matches, with the others all lumped together, trying to claw their way to the top.

Day 3 results
So far, after two days, no one contestant has managed to rise above the constant mental stresses that the tournament is famous for and pull away from the pack. Oh sure, pevergreen was undefeated, and some people were doing better than others, but all in all it was still a very tight tournament, with very little questions being answered. The numerous people flocking to the stadium for Day 3 of this exciting spectacle are hoping for some kind of separation or answers.
However, they still cheer wildly nonetheless when the referee comes out, acknowledges all of the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
The first match of the day is Andres vs. the current leader, pevergreen. Andres's promise of only throwing Scissors lasted an entire day before he discarded it yesterday. All of this means that pever was very confused, and Andres takes advantage of that here. pever throws Scissors, not wanting to look at his opponent. However, he can here by the wild gasp of the crowd that he has not maintained his undefeated record. Andres has thrown Rock.
Andres defeats pevergreen
Sigurd, still smarting over a tiebreaker defeat yesterday, is trying to rebound today with a victory over Death is Yonder. The two of them, each having one point, are trying to battle their way into the upper tier of contestants. The first round speaks of their being evenly-matched, with both contestants throwing Rock. However, in the second round, Sigurd pulls away, taking a gamble and throwing Paper which covers DiY's more conservative Rock. Sigurd acknowledges the crowd's loud cheering by bowing, shakes hands with his opponent, and watches the rest of the matches.
Sigurd defeats Death is Yonder
Beefy187, trying to claw his way back to the middle of the pack, battles atheotes, who before today was second place, a half a point behind pever. However, this round only served to muddle things more. On their first round, both contestants throw Paper. In the second round though, the risk-taker is rewarded once again, as Beefy's Scissors triumph over atheotes's Paper.
Beefy187 defeats atheotes
The final match is yet another tiebreaker, ensuring that the exhausted referee is certainly earning his pay. It is the same story as the other two, with CountArach and Warmaster Horus both throwing Scissors in the first round, and CountArach deviating from the course in the second round by throwing Rock, which crushes Horus's conservative choice of Scissors.
CountArach defeats Warmaster Horus
The third day is over, providing fewer answers than the rabid crowd wanted. However, the day has been good for one thing for sure: Providing a sound tiebreaking strategy. All three victors from tiebreakers won the same exact way; by predicting their opponents would remain on course and reacting accordingly. Of course, it remains to be seen how well this strategy holds up in the future.
Standings through Day 3:
pevergreen: 2
Sigurd: 2
CountArach: 1.5
atheotes: 1.5
Andres: 1.5
Beefy187: 1.5
Warmaster Horus: 1

Day 4 results
With today marking the halfway point of the round robin phase, the massive audience gathered at the stadium (not to mention the contestant pool) is eager for some answers, some separation. So far, they have been treated to an extremely tight battle where a single point separates first place from last. Tournament organizers are fretting about what they have to do should a multiple tiebreaker be required, but that's a story for another day. It's time for another round!
As always, the crowd somewhat quiets down as the referee walks in, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
Andres and Warmaster Horus stare each other down before throwing. Horus is desperately hoping for a victory, having achieved his one point in a victory against Sigurd. Andres, his promise to throw only Scissors, has long been dust in the wind. However, he deems it prudent enough to actually throw Scissors this time around, and the mental tactics work as Horus throws Paper and visually grimaces. With Andres's victory, he temporarily moves into first place while Horus slips further back.
Andres defeats Warmaster Horus
Next, in a matchup of a co-leader and a person only half a point behind, both Sigurd and atheotes are jockeying to firmly place themselves apart from the rest of the pack. Sigurd has attributed his one loss to a break in concentration, and has vowed for it not to happen again. However, he doesn't achieve the quick kill as both contestants throw Paper initially. Keeping with recent tradition, though, atheotes adjusts and throws Scissors, which easily cuts through Sigurd's conservative choice of Paper. atheotes has moved himself ahead of Sigurd, who is starting to look like the tournament's most inconsistent player.
atheotes defeats Sigurd
pevergreen, the other co-leader, faces down Death is Yonder in the next match, who is bringing up the rear. Now, because this is such a tight tournament, lots of people are picking DiY to be victorious here, just to throw another wrench into the proceedings. However, this is not to be. After an initial tie of both contestants throwing Paper, pevergreen finally achieves some separation and establishes himself as the clear leader by staying conservative and sticking with Paper while DiY tries to do too much and throws Rock.
pevergreen defeats Death is Yonder
Finally, the last match of the is CountArach vs. Beefy187, both of whom have been known for initially getting into ties. Of course, keeping with the theme of anything going in this tournament, no such tie is to be found as CA achieving a quick victory with his Paper covering Beefy's Rock.
CountArach defeats Beefy187
With the round robin phase halfway over, a hierarchy has finally somewhat been established. This is a relief to a great amount of people, including the bettors who now know where to set the odds of each match. As a matter of fact, the only people who probably don't like it are the "have nots" themselves, who find themselves having extra work to do should they not want to go up against the likes of pevergreen and CountArach in the opening match of the knockout round.
Standings through Day 4:
pevergreen: 3

Day 5 results
"A logjam at the top"
Separation had been achieved, at least somewhat, yesterday. Today, the eager crowd gathered in the stadium hungers for blood. They want hierarchy. They want storylines. But most of all, they want excellent Rock/Scissors/Paper action, something which the gathered contestants here are well-equipped to provide. Some of them recently have been showing up more than others; at last, the bookmakers are confident enough to lay odds on some of the matches. Money has already been exchanged, the seats have already been filled. The only thing that there is left to do is for everybody to watch the referee as he enters the stadium, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand into the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
In the first match of the day, Andres, near the head of the pack, faces off against Death is Yonder, who, despite his noble efforts, finds himself at the rear. This is one of the matches where the oddsmakers are confident enough to handicap, with Andres as the favorite. In this case at least, the outcome holds true to what the gamblers predict, as Andres's Scissors defeating DiY's Paper. After the match, Andres comforts DiY, who just can't seem to get a break in this tournament as he has lost four straight matches.
Andres defeats Death is Yonder
Up next is Mister Inconsistent, Sigurd, against another front-runner CountArach. Sigurd has been known to take a match off or two, and then come roaring back the day after, whereas CA has been solid through the tournament. However, today, the streaky Sigurd is obviously on his game, as his Paper finishes off CA's Rock without the need for there to be a tiebreak throw.
Sigurd defeats CountArach
In the most anticipated match of the day, atheotes, only half a point behind the lead, takes on pevergreen, who is at the vanguard of the pack. Should atheotes win, he will share first place with Andres. However, should pevergreen win, he will establish himself as the clear heavyweight in the tournament, knock atheotes back down to the middle of the pack, and put himself far ahead of everyone else but Andres. In this case, the former scenario holds true, and atheotes throws Rock, emitting a roar of triumph when he sees pever's thrown Scissors.
atheotes defeats pevergreen
Finally, the Master of Ties, Beefy187, goes up against the so-far disappointing Warmaster Horus. Beefy, who is exhausted after so many ties in previous matches, is trying to get into the upper tier of things as well as give himself a break. Horus, meanwhile, is only half a point behind Beefy and shares the same ambition. After all, despite the separation that has gone, everybody is still close to each other. During the first throw, Beefy visibly grimaces as he sees Horus has thrown the same thing as him: Rock. Another tie. Upon the second throw, though, Beefy follows the successful strategy of changing things up as his Paper covers Horus's conservative Rock.
Beefy187 defeats Warmaster Horus
As of now, there are three distinct tiers: The cluster at the top with four people all within a half-point of each other, the middle of the pack, with CA and Beefy far away from both first and last places, and the rear, with DiY and Horus playing for pride and waiting for an upset in the knockout round. However, with two more days of the Round Robin, much can still happen. The tournament has taught us that much so far.
Standings through Day 5:
atheotes: 3.5
Andres: 3.5
pevergreen: 3
Sigurd: 3

Day 6 results
"The home stretch"
With two days left in the Round Robin phase of the Tournament, the jockeying for knockout round position has officially begun. Everybody has their own agenda, but they all share the same basic goal of trying to get as high up as possible. Consistency has been heavily rewarded so far, and it is probable that only adherence to consistency will net a contestant one of the highly coveted top two seeds. The crowd, meanwhile, cares little for each contestant's desire; they only want to see good matches. And their hunger will soon be quenched, for they see the referee walk into the stadium, acknowledge the contestants, and raise his hand in the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
Andres, hoping to hold onto his share of first place, faces off against CountArach, who has been stumbling recently and as a result has slumped in the standings. However, in this instance, CA roars back into contention by throwing Rock, which defeats Andres's Scissors. CA is now tied with Andres and thus owns a share of first, at least for the moment.
CountArach defeats Andres
Two inconsistent players face off against each other next, with Sigurd going up against pevergreen. So far Sigurd has followed the pattern of winning on the odd-numbered days and losing on the even-numbered ones, while pevergreen has blown a number of opportunities to completely distance himself from the rest of the players. In the end, Sigurd's pattern holds true, and his thrown Rock does not hold up against pever's Paper. pever has once again put himself into first place, at least until atheotes goes, while Sigurd finds himself maddeningly in the middle of the pack once again.
pevergreen defeats Sigurd
The next match of the day pits the Master of Ties, Beefy187, against hard-luck Death is Yonder, who is trying to stay out of last place. Beefy, meanwhile, is hoping for one measly day of rest, but doesn't get it here as both contestants throw Paper initially. However, Beefy once again prevails in the tiebreaker round, his Rock defeating DiY's Scissors. Beefy is making a late charge for first or second, but he might be killing himself doing so. Nobody said this tournament wasn't grueling. DiY meanwhile, is disgusted and hopes to finish his Round Robin out on a high note tomorrow.
Beefy187 defeats Death is Yonder
The final match today has first-place atheotes against last-place Warmaster Horus. As this could be a playoff preview, this match is drawing an unusual amount of attention. atheotes needs to win the winnable victories in order to maintain his good seeding, while Horus wants to prove that he can hang with the best. However, it is not to be as atheotes takes sole possession of first by throwing Scissors against Horus's Paper.
atheotes defeats Warmaster Horus
With one day remaining, all contestants are eager to get out of the Round Robin phase, particularly atheotes and the two unlucky contestants; atheotes to hold onto first, and the other two to put their misery behind them. However, the other five are eager to make one final move and secure a good seed. The final day awaits.
Standings through Day 6:
atheotes: 4.5
pevergreen: 4
CountArach: 3.5
Beefy187: 3.5

Day 7 results
"Of course this *#%! happens right before the end"
It is the final day of the Round Robin phase. Those up front are hoping to solidify their positions, while those in the middle are trying to move up and those in the back are simply trying to stay out of last. The bettors want good returns on their money, while the crazed fans who have packed the stadium simply want a great day of matches. The contestants look poised to deliver, and the crowd erupts upon the emergence of the referee, who walks in, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand into the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
First-place atheotes, who has had an excellent tournament, is eager to wrap things up, however, he faces a dangerous opponent in Andres, whose use of randomness in the final days has served him well. In this case, it does so again, as his Paper defeats atheotes's Rock. Upon realizing that he has momentary possession of first place due to tiebreakers, Andres goes mad with joy, nearly drowning himself in a vat of Belgian beer. atheotes, meanwhile, can only kick himself in frustration. He was so close.
Andres defeats atheotes
Beefy187, who has been charging up the leaderboard recently, is exhausted from all of his previous ties but still game against the most inconsistent player of the tournament, Sigurd. If the pattern holds, Sigurd will come away with a victory since it is an odd-numbered day. However, this is not the case as Beefy breaks two patterns: First, by beating Sigurd with Paper over Rock, and second, by doing so without the need for a tiebreaker round.
Beefy187 defeats Sigurd
pevergreen, who has been in and out of first place for the entire tournament, is looking to take advantage of atheotes's mishap and claim the all-important #1 seed against Warmaster Horus, who has not had the best tournament. Patterns hold and pever throws Rock, defeating Horus's Scissors. By way of losing the tiebreaker to Death is Yonder, Horus is guaranteed the eighth spot in the knockout round, meaning the two of them will meet in a rematch in the opening day of the Knockout Round. pever, meanwhile, is too busy celebrating to take note of this fact.
pevergreen defeats Warmaster Horus
In the final match of the Round Robin phase, Death is Yonder, whose #7 seed is already wrapped up, plays for pride against CountArach, who is looking for a high seeding. With all eyes on him, DiY delivers and throws Scissors. This defeats CA's paper, and DiY is greeted by a thundering ovation as his losing streak is finally ended.
The Round Robin phase is over, but not all spots are yet locked up, as a look at the final standings can determine:
Standings after Day 7 (regulation):
#1: pevergreen: 5
#?: Andres: 4.5
#?: Beefy187: 4.5
#4: atheotes: 4.5
#5: CountArach: 3.5
#6: Sigurd: 3
#7: Death is Yonder: 2
#8: Warmaster Horus: 1
Because both Andres and Beefy defeated atheotes, atheotes is locked into fourth place and will play CountArach in the knockout round. However, in their Round Robin matchup, Andres and Beefy drew each other, leaving the second seed up for grabs.

For the knockout round, your opponent will be determined by seeding. 1 plays 8, 2 plays 7, etc. Participants will be re-seeded after each round - i.e. the #8 seed will always play the highest seed remaining, no matter what. There will be no draws. I will resolve 100 tiebreakers to get a match over with, if necessary. Win three games and you are officially the Rock/Paper/Scissors Champion of the Gameroom.

First Round Results
"How are the mighty fallen in the midst of battle!
O players, thee were slain of thy high seeds."
2nd Samuel 1:25 (slightly altered)
It is the time of year everyone has been waiting for. After seven long, arduous days of placement, the seeds have finally been determined and the pressure-packed Knockout Round of the first annual Gameroom Rock/Paper/Scissors Tournament is underway. The stadium is almost bursting to capacity in anticipation of the matches that are to happen today.
There are two matches from the final day of the Round Robin phase: #3 Beefy187 takes on #6 Sigurd, who is looking for revenge after a disappointing Round Robin performance; and #1 pevergreen faces off against #8 woad&fangs. This second matchup is interesting because even though the two technically met yesterday, they didn't. woad, remember, is substituting for Warmaster Horus, who unexpectedly had to drop out after the final day of the phase. pevergreen, who has every right to be annoyed that he's facing a wildcard instead a cushy last-placer, is unfazed and confident; the mark of a true victor.
In the other two matches of the day, #2 Andres battles #7 Death is Yonder. Both contestants finished their Round Robin phase on a high note, so we will see which hot streak is, in fact, hotter. Finally, #4 atheotes, who dropped three spots on the final day, will duel #5 CountArach and try to claw back into the realm of the truly feared.
Eventually, all storylines will be resolved, as the referee walks into the stadium to resounding applause. He acknowledges the contestants, wishes them all luck, and then raises his hand in the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
#1 pevergreen vs. #8 woad&fangs
Despite woad being a new player and an unknown to those present, pever is unfazed and focused, throwing Rock. woad, trying to get a measure of pever, throws Scissors and fails, marking a quick exit for the replacement player. pevergreen, starting to once again look like a juggernaut, moves on as it looks as if seeding patterns will hold here.
pevergreen advances
#2 Andres vs. #7 Death is Yonder
When last they met, Andres dispatched DiY without the help of the tiebreaker, throwing Scissors to DiY's paper. Today, the roles are reversed as DiY tries Scissors and watches with a grin as Andres throws Paper. Andres, looking down at what his opponent has thrown, almost collapses on the spot, realizing what has just happened. DiY, meanwhile, is nearly delirious with joy. He has now won two matches in a row, defeated the tournament's second seed, and is playing with house money as he advances to the semi-finals.
Death is Yonder advances
#3 Beefy187 vs. #6 Sigurd
Rumor has it that Sigurd spent the entire day yesterday after the match analyzing Beefy's every move in the tournament. Beefy, remember, got the best of him in Day 7 of the Round Robin without the need for a tie, and Sigurd is determined not to repeat this feat. He comes out throwing Scissors, as does Beefy, who simply grins. Another tie. However, this is where Sigurd's analysis pays off. Realizing that the most successful tiebreaking strategy is to throw the choice that defeats what both sides threw the previous round, Sigurd throws Rock. Beefy looks aghast as his thrown Scissors comes up beaten. After pever's early victory, another upset has been achieved as Sigurd moves on.
Sigurd advances
#4 atheotes vs. #5 CountArach
atheotes, who some believe has had the best tournament up until yesterday, slipped from first to fourth, meaning that neither party is very happy about the matchup. On one side, atheotes believes that he deserves a weaker opponent than the always-dangerous CountArach, while CA is a little frightened because he is playing someone who finished only half a point behind pevergreen in the standings. However, it becomes evident early on that the contestants are evenly-matched as both throw Scissors. In the tiebreaker though, the usual pattern holds and CA's Rock defeats atheotes's Scissors, completing the former first-place holder's rapid fall from grace and cementing the final upset of the day.
CountArach advances
It has been a bloodbath of day for the higher seeds, with only pevergreen advancing. Now the heavy favorite to win this tournament, he must face the suddenly-hot Death is Yonder, who is looking for another high-seeded trophy to put on his wall. Meanwhile, two somewhat disappointing but still dangerous contestants during the Round Robin phase, Sigurd and CountArach, finally got their act together and upset their opponents. They will battle each other in what promises to be an exciting semis.

"Australians all let us rejoice,

Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage

~ Australian national anthem
Two days remaining in the Tournament. There may be situations more tense than this, such as a nuclear standoff, but aside from that nothing really measures up. In the span of slightly over a week, these contestants face more pressure than most of us do in our entire lives. And they're still not done yet.
In the first match of the day, the heavy favorite, #1 pevergreen, battles Cinderella #7 Death is Yonder. Despite pever's seeming advantage, a lot of money has been placed on DiY, who is riding a hot streak and just accomplished a feat by knocking off #2 Andres and fellow semifinalist CountArach in subsequent days. It's noted that not even pever defeated Andres. Can the #1 seed hold on or be the next victim of the hottest player in the tournament?
In the other match, we have two cagey players, #5 CountArach and #6 Sigurd, facing off against each other. When they previously met on Day 5 of the Round Robin phase, Sigurd easily dispatched CA. Using this defeat as motivation, CA has been working extra-hard since then while Sigurd fell into somewhat of a tailspin before righting his ship yesterday against Beefy187. Now, the Count is looking for his final revenge and is aiming to deny his Norwegian foe entry into the finals.
With the crowd so loud that the contestants can't hear themselves think, the referee walks into the stadium, motions for quiet, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand into the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
#1 pevergreen vs. #7 Death is Yonder
The bell tolls midnight for Cinderella in a simple fashion, as pever throws Rock and DiY throws Scissors. Just like that, it ends for the unlikeliest entrant into the semi-finals, who in postgame interviews expresses how he was playing with house money and that he enjoyed the ride immensely. "Hopefully I'll go on a run a bit earlier next year so I don't have to get stuck with juggernauts early on in the Knockout Round," he says with a slight grin on his face. Meanwhile, pever is not celebrating. For him, all of this was expected and he still has some business to take care of tomorrow.
pevergreen advances
#5 CountArach vs. #6 Sigurd
The two eye each other up for an extremely long time before they finally throw, with the referee almost ready to step in. Finally, it happens - and the Curse of the even-numbered days strikes Sigurd again. He grimaces as he sees his Rock come up short against CA's Paper. Afterwards, he expresses disgust with himself. "I just couldn't put together a good streak," he says. "Well, tomorrow at least will be an odd-numbered day; Day 3 of the Knockout Round. Maybe I'll take third." CA on the other hand is not present for his interview. However, there are numerous signs of him afterwards at a local party, celebrating his victory. The party is finally broken up by the police at 5:30 in the morning.
CountArach advances
The sun is finally setting on a spectacular tournament, with one more all-important day to go that will decide everything. Will Sigurd put together enough consistency to take third? Will Death is Yonder grab a consolation prize for his magical run that ended one day too soon? Will CountArach's sure-to-be-terrific hangover impede his performance at all? And will pevergreen put together one more day of amazing play to put a stamp on what has been an amazing tournament for him? All will be answered tomorrow.

"Rock Rock
Rock Rock
Rock Rock
Rock Rock Rock Rock..."
~ Daft Punk
Only two more matches remain in what has been a fantastic tournament. Nearly a billion fans across the world are eagerly anticipating the final event, but first, the undercard must be played. However, to the multitude of screaming fans inside the stadium, the consolation match is far more than a consolation for them. It is a story of two players, both of whom had very flawed tournaments, trying for redemption and vindication of their amazing efforts to get here.
The first player is #6 Sigurd. An early favorite by oddsmakers to take the whole thing, Sigurd responded in style by defeating eventual #2 seed Andres on Day One of the Round Robin phase. From there, though, it was the story of maddening inconsistency as Sigurd could never string together two victories in a row. Only on the final day did he start a streak of any kind - losing, this time to Beefy187. However, Sigurd rebounded on the opening day of the Knockout Round by defeating Beefy in a rematch of the previous day, earning him a spot in the semi-finals. His opponent was #5 CountArach. The two dueled for some time, getting in a large amount of ties before CA eventually triumphed over his adversary. Now, hoping that his inconsistency will pay off and considering the fact that he is due for a win, Sigurd looks to end his tournament on a high note.
His opponent is #7 Death is Yonder, who has over time become something of a fan favorite here. DiY, like Sigurd, started off his tournament in style by defeating eventual #8 Warmaster Horus. However, after that, things started to go downhill, and DiY outright lost five straight matches before rebounding on the final day by beating #5 and eventual finalist CountArach. This performance was good enough to keep him out of last, and he ended up facing #2 Andres on the opening day of the Knockout Round. In the greatest upset of the tournament, DiY triumphed, sending Andres to an early defeat and going on something of a hot streak. This victory also made him the darling of the tournament and the sympathetic favorite. However, it was not to be. In the semis, DiY ran into a buzz saw in #1 pevergreen, and his ride was just about ended. Death is Yonder looks to put a final mark on what has been a wild ride here today.
In walks the referee to ear-shattering cheers. He acknowledges the contestants and raises his hand into the air.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
Both contestants throw down. The referee checks and verifies that neither of them threw too late, or altered their choice after they already threw. Upon verification, he signals to the audience: Tie. Both have thrown Rock. Sigurd and DiY smirk at each other. Of course it wouldn't be this easy. They stare each other down, trying to play mind games with each other. There is no sign that the other is cracking yet. Meanwhile, the referee restarts the process.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
All patterns hold. After being burned on ties before, neither contestant is as eager to break away from their original choice so quickly. As a result, there is a second tie. Both have thrown Rock again. The crowd erupts in a frenzy. However, Sigurd and DiY hear none of it. They are locked in their own little world, which solely contains themselves, their opponent, and occasionally the referee. Everything else is muddled; muffled. The long staredown begins again. On the giant scoreboard, fans can see a trickle of sweat start to run down DiY's face.
The referee quiets the crowd and restarts the process for a second time. Almost instantly, the entire stadium goes quiet. The referee's words are eerily amplified because of this.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
The quiet is quickly washed away by a torrent of bedlam as everybody sees the results. DiY has flinched first, finally changing up and throwing Scissors. Sigurd grins. The old warhorse has stuck to his guns and thrown Rock for a third consecutive time, his steadfastness serving him well here. Afterwards, the two of them shake hands and walk offstage. Death is Yonder will shower off, speak to the media, and then go as he pleases. Sigurd, meanwhile, will have to wait. After all, he is taking part in a medal ceremony along with the two men who have yet to play.
For all the excitement that the consolation match was, the main event is about to begin.
Sigurd takes third place in the tournament! Congratulations to him and thanks to Death is Yonder for participating!
GH, just post the final already.
I can smell that you've already written it, you're just torturing us for your own amusement :mean:

:laugh4: I feel much the same way GH.
Congratulations Sigurd
Thank you
I am looking forward to that bronze medal.
Again, thank you from a former Australian resident.
This is outrageous! The tourney is clearly rigged to allow only Australians to win! This is the new apartheid! Next sequel I will show to everyone the fragility of Australian players!

"There's a long drive... it's gonna be, I believe...THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!
Bobby Thomson hits into the lower deck of the left-field stands! The Giants win the pennant and they're goin' crazy, they're goin' crazy! YAYHOO!!!
~Russ Hodges, calling the 1951 NL tiebreaker game
Death is Yonder walks off to contemplate his run. Sigurd showers, composes himself, and prepares for the ceremony. The other contestants - Andres, Beefy187, atheotes, Warmaster Horus, and even woad&fangs - are all present as well, waiting backstage. They have been granted special access in order to witness this historic occasion.
The two men left, however, know of none of this. #1 pevergreen and #5 CountArach are kept in isolation beforehand, leaving them alone with their own thoughts. The two of them could be zoning out and relaxing to their favorite tunes. They could be watching the Consolation match on the TVs provided in their rooms. They could be going over their opponent's records, looking for a pattern or a weakness to be exploited. Or, they could be doing none of these, a barrel of nerves simply ready for the tournament to be over with. Nobody knows, as they are left well alone until the time comes to get them.
#1 pevergreen's performance this tournament has been nothing short of sublime. He breezed through both the Round Robin phase and early parts of the Knockout Round, compiling a 7-2 record and victories against both CountArach and Sigurd in the Round Robin. He has been notable for getting in the heads of his opponents and abandoning his patterns at just the right time. The only knocks against him are that he hasn't really put a streak together up until the later days, and that he hasn't played a decent opponent since Day 6 of the Round Robin phase. pever, however, has welcomed all criticism, saying that it simply fuels him to better, and is prepared to do what he has unable to do for the entire tournament: pull away from his opposition once and for all.
His opponent is #5 CountArach, who has had more of an up-and-down run. After starting slow by drawing #4 atheotes and losing to pevergreen, CA reeled off two quick wins before losing to eventual 3rd place finisher Sigurd. He rebounded nicely against #2 Andres before losing on the final day to #7 Death is Yonder; an embarrassing loss at the time since DiY had lost five straight at that point. This maddening inconsistency earned him the 5th seed in the tournament and a date against fallen star atheotes in the first match of the Knockout Round. However, CA stepped it up here by defeating the former #1 and then avenging his loss to Sigurd by defeating him in an epic match. CA has pointed to his more difficult Knockout Round run as a sign that he can tangle with the best, and is ready to prove it against the most dangerous opponent of all. Has CA finally gotten on a streak of any kind?
The referee walks in. The stadium nearly explodes from all of the noise. Around the world, billions of pairs of eyes are glued to their television sets and radios. This is particularly true in Australia, where there have been reports of fights breaking out between people from Queensland and New South Wales all day. To accentuate this divide, both are wearing their provincial colors: pever maroon, and CA blue.
Eventually, though, all dies down. The referee pauses, acknowledging his contestants and congratulating them on getting so far. He then raises his hand, and a hush falls over seemingly the entire world.
"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"
An eternity passes in the blink of an eye. The thinking, the intimidating, the obsessing, is finally done. All the two contestants have to do now is simply throw. And they do.
pevergreen starts out with good old reliable Rock, the hero of the marathon Sigurd/DiY match that just concluded. However, CountArach throws Paper.
He has a split second to comprehend what has just happened before bedlam takes over. The noise, later measured to be a Guinness World Record for loudest crowd noise, is all-encompassing. Both contestants are swept up in it as well, with CA roaring in elation and pever screaming in fury. The referee too, points at CA and yells "Winner!", but nobody can hear him. He cannot even hear himself.
All over NSW, the victory celebration has already begun. Car horns are honked, windows are broken, and many drinks are ordered and summarily spilled.
In the stadium, it takes an hour and a half to restore order. Somehow, the medal ceremony is ready to begin. The three winners are all congratulated, as are the honorable-mention contestants (for it would not be a great tournament without them), but really, it is all about CountArach. He has persevered. He has defeated. And he is now the official Rock/Paper/Scissors champion of the world.
CountArach takes first place in the tournament!
pevergreen takes second place in the tournament!
Sigurd takes third place in the tournament!
Thanks to all for participating and making it a great tournament! We'll see you again sometime in the future! :medievalcheers:

Post game thoughts:
I shouldn't have entered this. I got way too caught up in it.
I was confident every round except the final and vs'ing Andres.
I spent all of about 30 seconds deciding what to send in this last round, which may have been my downfall, or CA may have just been too good.
Thank you to the other players, and to GH for hosting.
I won't be joining another one. If I try to, don't let me.
Congrats to all participants. Nicely done CA.
