Am I the only one who thinks that the unit animations (walking/running/firing arrows/horse anim./fighting...)
are better in STW than in MTW.

IMHO, for the same graphic settings (1024X768 for example) there is much more details in unit graphics, units look more realistic, and fighting animations are really great and much more detailed.

... why ?

To be fair STW does concentrate alot on orderly ranks which is very inaccurate because all of the men are perfectly lined up together, at least in MTW they can be scattered more i.e the archers and cavs.

Hmmmm unit animation... well no MTW has got better ones and rightly so.

I agree with you Draksen, I posted this when the MTW demo came out. I am reminded of cartoon characters when I watch the infantry marching. The cav are a bit better but even they move strangely and as for the maps....I can't see the classic strategic maps of Shogun working with MTW. Add to all this the fact that there are some obvious Faction imbalances which inevitably means weaker ones are rarely fielded.
Already I find I am losing interest because of the many game spoiling factors, the above is one but there are many more such as units that never get used, archers who fire blunts, so called great unit sprites that all look the same, infantry that runs as fast as cav...... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

I have had some fun battles there but nowhere near the fun I have had here.

Sorry MTW you just have too many faults....

ah thx Orda Kahn.

we are not ... alone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

And althoug MTW is "newer", I don't like it as much as STW:MI:
1 - the graphics in battles (units / maps)
2 - the strategic map : too many strategic units on the map; confusing not clear
3 - the general atmosphere
4 - the "main subject / theme " : Samurai Japan vs. Medieval Europe ... for me Japan wins, easily (IMHO, of course)

....

MTW is OFF my HD. Nothing more to say, and I continue playing STW:MI, solo ... I will "restart" MP games soon http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

NO the STW community is not dead http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

hard to say,
but in STW the men are not scaled down as small as in MTW.
if i import the naginata into mtw their apparent size is a little smaller than they were in stw...

You guys are not alone on that. I too think stw units look a lot better, but the maps i think are about the same.

I have played thousands of stw battles and so far a few hundred of mtw. The feel for stw was more enjoyable cause units looked so cool when i used my 1600x1200 res zoomed out. Mi looked abit worse than stw i think. The knights in mtw don't look to bad though.

I felt the same way when i downloaded the mtw demo. I was like what the heck? Why do the graphics keep getting worse? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

That would be cool if mtw had the same unit sprities as stw... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Oh yea i almost forgot. In mtw units keep formations that you drag, so when selecting a few units and dragging a new line you get funky+weird shapes. when marching just a short distance units will turn sideways completely. In stw when moving a short distance using the alt key units would march sideways. When you had your whole army march sideways in stw it looked so cool. When i say sideways i mean the unit would stay facing the same direction and keep formation exactly, when marching a very small distance. God i miss that... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Yes, I miss that sideway, it took me over a year to 'discover' it. Very handy, you didn't expose your weak flank when manoeuvring but could always keep the defensive line between yourself and the enemy.

Hmmmm care must be taken not to alt/click too far or they turn in Shogun too. A bit to one side and then move again is better than clicking too far and finding all those exposed flanks. I haven't noticed that in MTW I will check it out.

Barocca, I know which one gets my vote. Look at that Nag... he is superb in all his armour and with that evil looking polearm. What is the MTW sprite I can't see a weapon??

AMPage, do you find that it always seems to rain towards the end of a battle in MTW?? Even when the forecast is fine weather.

STW sidestepping 'works' when you draw an imaginary square around your army. I try to put my general in the middle of it to get a good coordination. Click a little left of your general and the army moves a little to the left, click in front of the general and the army advances a bit, click behind it and it retreats a bit. You can click approximately 3/4 of a unitwidth in any direction away from the general (unit = 6*10). Make sure that all units are selected, best is to also group all units. Especially when you 'wheel' the army: Alt right click.

That's strange why they would take out sidestepping and have it where the whole unit turns sideways when moving just a little.

Rain isn't as bad now with that patch or maybe it's cause i'm playing more arid maps. Rain is a killer on fatigue, who wants to play with tired troops, that take forever to rest to regain fatigue. That's one of the reasons when its raining heavy i like to rush with my whole army and not try little tricks killing my troops fatigue. I wouldn't mind rain at all if it wasn't such a killer on fatigue.

I didn't even notice I thought that was one of the coolest features of STW.

I can confirm that the 'sideways shuffle' is missing. I tried it last night http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

I was so disgusted I made them run for their stupidity http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

the mtw sprite is from the chainhlm bif,
the chainhlm bif is
ByzantineInfantry, FeudalFootKnights, FeudalManAtArms,
JanissaryHeavyInfantry, NapthaThrowers,
and SaracenInfantry,
they simply mix and match weapons and shields to get all the different units,

STW all units had weapons "attatched",
Warlords about 2/3 had weapons "attatched" and the rest weapons were added "on the fly"
MTW almost all weapons added "on the fly"...

Maybe because CA think that japanese 16th century marching is different compared to medieval marching (i.e more refined and protected) ? http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/confused/confused24.gif. Anywas this is cool, would really help when fighting your unbalanced all cav army http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif.

I also wonder whats the deal with europeans' spearhead, if you zoom at order foot/chiv sarge/spearmen the shape of the spearhead is square(box-like), compared to nubian spearmen's spearhead which is normal imo (triangle-shaped). I swear sometimes that box shaped spears make me hungry because they look like the japanese pocky sticks if you guys know what im talking about.

hard to tell but i fell in love with teh original stw demo speed of horses animation. later teh speed seems to be increased and horses get more a flying character.
