How can it be 10 years since it was released?

There are various celebrations going on across the internet. My favourite is Rock, Paper Shotgun's article (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/08/12/the-girl-who-wanted-to-be-god/#more-15868) (heavy spoilers warning, also some swearing in the comments).

System Shock 2.
The only game to ever scare me.
The only game I've had nightmares about.
The game which gave me a lasting fear of certain monkey sounds.
The only game I have started many times, and never once completed.
A game where much dialogue is etched into my memory in blood-drenched horror.
A game with enemy designs that brought out utter, sheer revulsion in me.
The benchmark for atmosphere.

Not a perfect game yet definitely one of the finest I have played.

Ten years, I remember 1999 like it was just yesterday - and I'd sooner forget it! It certainly has been a crazy decade in gaming with Bioshock 2 on the horizon now, my how the time flies.

I'm definitely too much of a wuss to actually play the game, but there's a video walkthrough of sorts here (http://bluecasket.sekritforum.com/?p=313) that I may use as a vicarious tribute. The narrator is a little annoying but explains a lot of stuff.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, warning - sporadic harsh language, especially when enemies abound!

Funnily enough, I remember very well the day I brought SS2. Release day was a half day at college, so I walked the 2 1/2 miles into town and picked up a copy of the game. Then I met my mum, did some more shopping, and sat drinking hot chocolate and reading the manual in a cafe. I got home, loaded up the game, played through until I reached the end of the portion which had been in the demo, and promptly saved and headed off to do more calming things.

I decided that if I can get it to work on my current machine I'm going to try and finish it. Again. :sigh: Hydroponics is the furthest I have got - by the time I have made it through the cargo holds and engineering I'm a frayed wreck! SS2 is so bad that Dead Space's early levels made me uneasy and tense merely by how the ship layout and general theme were similar.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
Frogbeastegg, you have never completed it? YOU INFIDEL! Seriously though, the best part is at the end. lol You really should go back and complete it.

EDIT: And for the record, while I like SS2, I have always been more amused by it than 'scared'. In fact, I think it is a very unscary game. :P Doom III is the scariest game ever made IMHO. THAT had me jumping out of my moccasins!
