What circumstances cause a unit to fight to the death? Throughout EB, I've seen units like Spartans rout after they lose enough units but I've also seen levy units like the Hellenic Levy Phalanx stay and fight to the death. :inquisitive:

When a unit would rout, but cannot due to being completely closed in and surrounded by the enemy, it "fights to the death". Make room and it will rout.

"fighting to the death" is similar to routing... on the unit cannot run to anywhere so it just stays there in formation.

The don't do as much killing when "fighting to the death" as they do when fighting normally.

If a unit that is "fighting to the death" is annyoing you, just move a few units out its way and they will run away through the space u gave them.

If they have high discipline, and you circled them completely they can fight to death.
so take care to fight against Highly Disciplined soldiers.

I prefer to have enemy units fight to the death instead of rout. Chasing routers in EB is for some reason much more difficult than in other mods or vanilla. Enemies fighting to the death that actually kill some of the player's troops is rather rare, and they are much easier to kill than routers.

Fighting to the death troops give less experience to the enemy units than normal ones as well

Yeah, RTW has to change the "fight to death" mechanics. Usually, soldiers fighting in a last stand are supposed to be fighting much better than normal, but in RTW, it is almost impossible for a "fighting to death" unit to inflict casualties. And they die in one, which is even often less than the routing units, which are more difficult to kill in EB.

Also if a unit routs while on a wall it will get "fighting to the death" and will not move for the rest of the battle.

Which is one of the most annoying things in the game when it's your unit. No matter how many times you get your general to rally, they just stand there on the wall :furious:

This actually ruined a battle in original RTW. I was defending a town, but was overmatched by the enemy. Some of them routed on the walls, but most got through to the town square. By using a cavalry unit to constantly charge into the narrow street I destroyed their entire army. The catch - the enemy soldiers on the walls were still "fighting to the death", and would not come down. As I had no infantry, I could not clear them out. Plus, I had the timer switched off. End result: I had to exit the battle, losing me the town and my hard-won victory. :furious3:

Those cavalry were the bodyguards of one of my best generals, by the way :shame:.

This mechanics was better in M2TW, As I remember, unit that got fighting to the death get attack bonus, but also massive defense penalty.

sounds more realistic.
