View Full Version : Lemur's Next Cool SF Movie Thread
Well, since we had such a lively discussion of District 9, and since I'm always scouring the interweb tubes for new SF to watch, I figured it was time to start a dedicated thread.
Here's the next Big Thing people are going on about: Avatar, from Jimmy Cameron. Here's the trailer (http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/avatar/teaserlarge.html) (Quicktime warning). Here's the Youtube version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYBRFJ9RArc) (slightly lower quality).
Looks very, very videogamey to this lemur. I really don't know about it. Thoughts?

I dunno, that CGI looks pretty realistic to me.

Best... movie... ever...

Yes, looks like Halo 3 meets WoW, re-enacting the battle of Endor. As the target market might say: "epic fail".
The CGI in the trailer looks very impressive. The success or failure of this film, however, depends on whether or not Cameron can tell a decent story with those visuals.
Until then, I wouldn't buy into the hype.
Anybody have a chance to see Moon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIexG8179K8&fmt=22)? Has it come and gone already? Looks like a really interesting flick.

If it weren't James Cameron, director of, among many others, Terminator 2, I'd be more worried. I think we all just subconsciously fear George Lucas and his Star Trek prequels.

It does look interesting. I went to the website at the end of the trailer and it is out now but in a very limited release - currently showing in about 40 some theatres around the US, coming to another 20 on Friday (August 21) and yet another 30 or so over the next several weeks. It is an indie film done on a 5 million dollar budget - they really got their money's worth on the special effects. They looked pretty good.
Well, about avatar, the apple trailers aren't working but the one on youtube was great.
I'm just sad that Rendevous with Rama won't be made into a film. One of my favorite books from my favorite authour.
Bumnmer. :embarassed:

Avatar looks like it'll just be another boring "humans ruin everything!" movie with some admittedly cool visuals ripped from Halo.
That's what I liked about District 9. It wasn't just "humans ruin everything!" - there was more nuance and less space marines ruining things.
I want an unapologetic space-marines-ruin-things movie (that isn't an adaptation of starship trooper).

There have been no film adaptations of Starship Troopers. :stare:

I'd love to see Ender's Game made into a film, but it's been in development hell for over a decade. Something about graphic violence and genocide with children seems to make the studios nervous.

Lemur, that's a bummer about the Ender's Game movie. I thought it was moving along nicely to theatres. I missed the bit about Wolfgang Petersen being dropped as director, but I have to agree with Card about wanting the movie adaptaion being "right".
Same deal with Rendezvous with Rama - I missed the scrapping of the movie news. Double bummer.

Um ... that looks like your basic slasher/thriller. Maybe a notch or two below Splinter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJndd5Eyz18&fmt=22) in the originality department. Could you explain why this film is interesting? 'Cause the trailer failed to ignite my geek lust.

Well it isn't

Oooooookay, could you clue me in? A summary, perhaps, or a linkie? I'm not trying to be dense, but the trailer ain't much to go by.

I read somewhere that in February 09 there's been a new script from OSC and production is 'moving forward'. So there may be hope yet.
I gotta respect Card for wanting a good movie or no movie at all.
As for Avatar, I've read from some people who saw a 15 minute preview of the movie and say the trailer doesn't do it justice. Hopefully it isn't a videogamey 'humans are the evil!'

Sure, a group of friends is being hunted by their perfect copy's, and they can't remember certain aspects of their lifes, how they met, how they broke up, pictures of which they don't remember the moment they were taken, yougetit. In the body of a killed friend a certain device is found, no scar.
wth????
