Hiya guys.

Situation:

Lady friend I wish very much to impress (see a backroom thread :P) has given me her laptop. Her mum threw it against the ground, and as I fear, its a hard drive problem. A mechanical fault as it seems.

Constant loud ticking from the hard drive.

Neither windows nor the manufactorers diagnostic tool pick up the drive being there.

So, I am screwed?

I've already contacted one mob about getting it fixed, problem is, mechanical faults tend to be expensive. I don't want to be out hundreds, and she hasnt got the money.

Normally, I'd leave it, but its got all her photos from her year over seas.

I'm afraid it's not sounding good...

The ticking sound is definite sign of serious physical damage to the drive caused by dropping.

The fact that the drive is not being detected also points to serious damage.

Professional data recovery companies can usually retrieve data from even partially destroyed HDDs, though it's not cheap - it can run into £1000s.

Yeah, if it's clicking the odds are very strong you're stuffed. Mechanical failure inside the drive isn't a home repair.
