View Full Version : Victoria Multiplayer Session

Since apparently we have quite some players of Victoria: Revolutions in this forum, I was wondering how open are you guys towards making our own ".Org Ricky multiplayer session"?

My kind of idea (One I have done so before with extreme fun) was for us experienced gamers (Ex: Jolt and Khaan) to be great powers, taking on countries which are powerful, but which imply having to multitask with many things (Economy, wars, budget, etc) as the game keeps going (Which means we'll have to play with a setting ranging from Very Slow to Below Normal), while the innexperienced players (Ex: Tratorix and Meneldil) play as a regional powers which will be under the protection and guidance of one of the Great Powers played by the players.

The experienced players would give advice in the chat to any questions the newbies ask, as well as providing money and techs so the newbies can be kept reasonably on par with teh A.I.

I once did this format exactly, with me as Germany and a friend (my Protectee) as Belgium, while the other experienced player played France and his mate played Sardinia-Piedmont.

Obviously, we can work in another format if this goes ahead.

I like it! Also I am in for a regional power slot (not good enough to do a Great Power). I've never done MP though so are there things that are different than SP? I heard teching happens much quicker.

Sure. Might take a spot of work getting a time that will work for everyone, though.

Jolt
08-27-2009, 16:18
Yeah. Usually when its games with Americans and Europeans, the time is usually somewhere in the evening of GMT. So imagining it's like 11 PM GMT, it would start in the Americas on the afternoon. 5/6 PM.

Monk, unless there are some modifications to the game teching occurs at the normal rating. Provided you can get enough Research Points, you'll be gifted plenty of techs by your protector. (Provided he can maintain his research rate fast enough as well.)

I'd be up for this. Would we be using a mod, or just vanilla?

Jolt

I'd be in favor of using VIP and following somewhat historical guidelines (No blitzkrieg expansions, where Germany owns half of Europe), except in Africa, where it would be a "everything goes" and where we can use our blitzkrieging rage we held in Europe.

If noone else wants to play, I'd say we do it by the same format (Prussia/Germany+Belgium or United Lowlands - France+Sardinia/Italy)

I'm in, but I still suck somewhat. Hmm... never tried VIP yet.

EDIT: I'm in central Canada, btw.

EDIT2: I'm going to go ahead and put my claim on Belgium. That is, if nobody minds, of course.

Jolt

Well, unless someone else wants to join, we can make it into something like:

Jolt - Prussia
Tratorix - Belgium

khaan - France
Monk - Sardinia

Megas - Switzerland (Helped with money and techs by both me and France)

Unless someone wants to take the "middle" path (Japan) but will innevitably be very away from the rest of the players for most of the game.

EDIT: Or we could make it like me and khaan take up as the "Lesser" Great Powers while the rest take up Major Great Power and we all leave the UK for the A.I.

Something like:

Tratorix - Prussia
Megas - France
Monk - Austria
khaan - Russia
Jolt - Sardinia

I'd be up for France, I guess.

I'd advise those who haven't played VIP (Since we will be playing VIP I suppose) to download the 0.3 and try it out. The most blatant thing you need to know is that VIP has several different "goods" then vanilla does.

Also in MP, Iron and Sulphur (In VIP, Sulphur is even more important since the "Chemical Products" good, which is vital for any industry may also suffer shortages) will become major strategical resources. It is advised you max out/expand your Iron and Sulphur RGOs, if you have them, and do not convert any POPs working in those to Industry. Failure to do that will most probably result in severe (At least more severe than if you had not converted them) Iron & Sulphur shortages for your Industry, which translate if Steel and Chemical shortages for your economy, which finally translates into a weaker ability to expand your infrastructure and your economy altogether (The development of many goods requires Chemicals)

I was being modest when I said I still suck, though I still haven't played as a great power yet (Switzerland does sound appealing, though). Btw, I just downloaded VIP 3.0 the other day for V:R 2.01.

So, since things haven't moved on so much these things, I was wondering, how about we start playing tuesday?

Tuesday at 11 PM GMT/6 PM Eastern Time?

Eurgh. I start classes next week. I'll be way too busy to bother with online gaming, mane. It's too demanding.

Though I can't play due to my time schedule, I wish all the players good luck. An AAR or some sort of report would be cool if someone can be bothered to write it :)

Argh, ok, this will be postponed to October. We'll see if we can find schedule by then.

October might be better all around, the first weeks of September are always a bit hectic in my case.

Just giving this a little bump. I'm able to play around 5/6pm CST on weekdays and earlier if it's the weekend.

Jolt

Indeed, I may start playing in October which is when I move to my College dorm*.

Ah September, how I loathe it. Always so busy.

I'm good for anything 4pm EST and onward (which would be 9 or 10 GMT) should we get this up and running anytime soon.

Jolt

Ok, I'm relatively settled in. I originally thought of we trying the first session this sunday, but I eventually forgot that. So how about we go for next Sunday, 18th of October, at 10 PM GMT/5 PM EST?

I'll PM everyone who expressed a interest in this thread with a link to my post

Jolt

10PM On a Sunday? By the Dog, that's late (I'm British btw) :wall:

However, I'm still up for it. Although I'm not a long playing Vicky Veteran, I'm up for most challenges (Except ofc UK Russia etc.) Normally, I'd make a beeline straight for Austria, but seeing as how it's VIP, I might have to look somewhere else. USA maybe?

P.S. If this does go on in the future, a rescheduling to Friday/Saturday would be nice. Also, I'll need help regarding setting up connections, since I have no idea how to do it.

No time atm, but what do you guys think of China as an MP contender? I played a Ricky (not VIP) campaign as them and I don't know how I'll ever go back to Euro countries with 3M people after the limitless production and armies that 300M people provides...

China as multi will depend entirely on who you're playing with. Early on, I fail to see how you'll have a chance to win the opium war against a human opponent. Normally, against the AI, its very difficult. However, it can be VERY (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=2176758#post2176758) rewarding in the long run if you win. This is why I probably wouldn't advise taking China- human opponents will likely wreck you to prevent the unstoppable behemoth from arising. :sweatdrop:

Awesome then. Only Tratorix left confirming. In any case, provided that my college dorm net works fast enough (Unlikely, but we never know), I might be able to play. Otherwise, you'll start the first session without me.

I'm Portuguese. We got exactly the same time fuse. If I'm not mistaken, Ichigo is Dutch so he'll be one hour ahead of us

EDIT: ATPG, khaan is right. In MP, besides being manhandled by a minimally competent British player, you also have significant problems to make up for that in both ways:

Massive money shortage (And deficits) in case you attempt to build a significant army to make up for its pathetic lack of technology.
Or you save up money to buy techs from Civilized players, but since all other players know that if you industrialize & modernize, you can defeat them easily usually China players find themselves very difficultly getting techs from anyone. Even so, since you saved up money for techs and provided you purchase them at exhorbitant costs, you then must neglect your military which in turn means other European MP players (Especially Russia) might find it attractive to grab parts of your Empire.

So yeah, China in MP basically faces some of the problems real China faced. In VIP, this is now even more exacerbated, since you have to deal with a bucketload of revolt events, if you (Obviously) lose the Opium Wars.

I'll probably be available to play on Sunday. I'll probably just take a small country, though, since I'm not very good.

Jolt

Do we know who's going to have what countries? Also, are we using a mod?

As for the mod, we shall be using the following:

Victoria: Revolutions, v 2.01
Mod: VIP 0.3
House rules would be that any ahistorical parties are not to interfere with major chain-plots (This includes but probably not limited to: Not interfering the Opium War/Arrow War; German & Italian unification; American Civil War.) Obviously, those historically involved may use all their wits and might to attempt to change history.

We haven't picked any definitive countries as of yet.

I would suppose it would be better to follow my first proposal.

More experienced players get the larger countries and each has a more innexperienced player whom is helped by the larger player. Thus the more innexperienced players won't be so overwhelmed while playing against other human players.

Monk
10-14-2009, 16:52
I don't care who gets what, for the most part, but Jolt's proposal seems one that is quite sound.

If i had a choice I'd like to take an Italian faction, with a preference of Sardinia-Piedmont. It would be very interesting trying to form Italy in a MP game.

With the first Hotfix as well I assume.

Didn't read the link (only gave a brief look, no time) but I used to play online with Hamachi.

Unfortunately. Jolt mentioned in chat he would see if he could get it to work on a much smaller scale if there was another attempt, but we tried for a good two hours to connect to a game with no luck.
