This was a battle on the Russia Poland border where I decided to strike Halych with a small force (as it was lightly defended), but got intercepted by some superior troops. Can't recall precisely what the enemy force composed of, but there was a unit of Polish Nobles, several Spears, a unit or two of Dismounted Polish Nobles, Peasant Archers and peasants.
As in my last russian battle, I split up my troops. Archer and Kazak on one flank, Archer and Kazak on the other flank. I had two Generals Bodyguards also on the flanks. The one Woodsmen unit was basically diversion fodder, which fortunately most of the Polish went after. The intention was to cause what damage I could and then withdraw, but turned out to be a full rout of the enemy.
The missiles on the flanks softened up the troops, and did divert some attention from the woodsmen, separating them from the rest of the army. The bodyguards went after the crossbows and peasants before "combining forces" to go after the Polish Nobles.
One by one the enemy units broke and started to rout after the general was dead and a bit more battle. By the end of the battle I had the Kazaks and bodyguards circling the last remaining spear units while they continued to be peppered with arrows from the archers, eventually causing them to decide running was a better option.
Final Tally:
Men Men Men Enemies
Deployed Lost Remaining Killed
Russians: 175 40 135 180(162)
Polish: 348 343 5 46(1)
(2) General's Bodyguard: Casualties Inflicted: 89, Prisoners Caught 103.
Kazaks:Casualties Inflicted: 46
Poland paid 1861 Florins for the captured troops.
No matter what the battle, you can definitely turn the odds with a few tactics.
