Tomorrow is 70th anniversary of world war II.
I’m thinking about polish loses during that war – 1/6 of population, 50% of industry, cities ruined, stolen property. I’m thinking about 50 years of soviet occupation – about lost perspective of development.

And I wonder – was it worth?

Then I see Poland today and compare it with Poland 20 years ago. Poor, underdeveloped country surrounded by potential enemies with big perspective of war with neighbours. Country that was not really player into Europe – rather pawn on chess board.

But I see Poland today and compare it with Poland 20 years ago.

Today Poland is strong. Into last 20 years it developed fastest since 600 years. Safe borders and conflicts with neighbours (for example about Nazis and their heritage into german family law) on completely different level. Russians are threatening but no one scares them. One big nation prevent minorities from treason of state. Cities are modern and beautiful – each year some of remainings of commies are being rebuilded. People are much better educated, not afraid of economical fight.
So I think it was worth. We lost much but we did not lost souls. We understood that alliances are nothing and you can build your safety depending only on yourself – both military and economically.

And I see that I’m living into time when Poles are fulfilling their dreams.

And I want to see what will happen into next 20 years.

Polish cities are beautiful indeed. (Cracow! Gdansk!) Beer flows plentiful, the pork that's served is delightfully fat and greasy. Poland's economy is growing at a steady pace and looks set to do so for some time to come.

Here's hoping the stability and contentment this brings about will continue to develop Poland into an open European state with a relaxed attitude about itself and the world.

Warsaw is a great city, it has a small core but really nice architecture, very robust. Yeah Poland has come a long way both in reality and perception, it has a bright future.

One of Europe best kept secrets. Polish chicks are bleedingly hot indeed. They can be a bit aggressive though, personally I think you should get to know eachother before marrying, introducing would be a great start.

ok, this didn't really actually happen.

we can be friends I am flexible.

Small case of finger-> face for Krook, I think it's time Poland lets WW2 go, I know it hit Poland really really hard but we are a different generation, not the same germans, and admittingly to a lesser extent not the same Russians. Looking back to recent history is a waste of time there is nothing to learn, nothing to gain, we can't really understand our times we are in the middle of it.

You start out fine but the nothing can be learned/done part is what I don't agree with.
In fact a lot was learned from WW1 and 2, especially europeans have largely started to try to abandon violence, wars etc. Patriotism took a big hit in many countries as well, if we said nothing can be learned or done then I guess it would be fine if we all voted for the NPD here. :dizzy2:

So did europeans in the Vienna convention, it worked, for a while. I doubt there will be more wars amongst European nations but to say we have learned from WW2, doubt it, this is the pax america we owe our peace to them not to ourselves.
