View Full Version : Can’t Find The Imperial Campaign to Play????

Hi All!
I am new to this forum but I’ve been playing RTW & BI mods ever since this game came out and I never seem to tire of it, whenever I have the time to actually sit down and play, that is.
I currently do have some time to play one my favorite mods (Europa Barbarorum) for my favorite computer game (Rome Total War).
I have Europa Barbarorum v0.81a installed on RTW (v.1.5) with the Barbarian Invasion (v. 1.6) add-on. I use the “-mod:eb -nm -show_err” suffix in my shortcuts and I have had no problem playing the game. After numerous exciting turns, I decided to check and see if there was a later version of this wonderful Mod. To my pleasant surprise I discovered a huge v.1.1 Full install with a v.1.2 Update patch available. I finally found a site that offered both of these downloads and after creating another fresh and clean copy of RTW-BI I installed them.
The game begins to load and I get a screen that tells me that it is Europa Barbarorum v. 1.2.
I click “Single Player” but there is no option to play the “Imperial Campaign.”
All I have to choose from are either “historical” or “custom” battles, but no campaign screen appears from which to choose a faction/tribe to play????
I have checked and the “Imperial Campaign” folder and 49.7 MB of files are in the "EB/Data/World/Maps/ Campaign/Imperial_Campaign” location.
I can see that there are some obvious folder and file differences from the older v0.81a version, and I can’t get this latest version to play at all from the short-cut that the mod installer provided (it keeps asking me for the RTW disk, which is currently in storage in another town), but when I create my own shortcut with the with the
“-mod:eb -nm -show_err” suffix, and use the BI disk which I have with me I can get to the loading screen described above, but have no “Imperial Campaign” option???
Since I don’t have my RTW CD with me I am somewhat limited at present in my ability to trouble shoot. I had assumed that I could play this latest version with the BI add-on disk, but I may be wrong about that.
Is this game exclusive to the RTW v1.5 without any compatibility for BI v1.6?
Or, is there something else that I need to do to make the game recognize the “Imperial_Campaign” folder and files so that I can start this game now?
The site that I downloaded all my files from was: Org FTP
The v.1.1 installer was 786 Mb and the v. 1.2 update patch was 108 Mb, I don’t know if these are lacking something or corrupted, but it was the only website I found that readily had them available. Just in case I may have erred somewhere I created a fresh RTW-BI copy and re-installed again, with the same result for both Europa Barbarorum v.1.1 & 1.2.
I’ve just spent several hours doing all this and searching this forum for a possible solution, but no luck, so far.
I am hopeful that someone out there can help me cut-the-chase and shed some constructive advice on this issue.
If there is no way to play this latest Mod on anything other than RTW, then I’ll just have to wait until I can dig out that disk and try again.
However if there is something else that I can try to let me play it now, while I have the time, using my BI disk, that would be great.
BTW, my PC is using XP, and I have plenty of hard drive and RAM, and I can still play v0.81a without a hitch so far, but I sure would like to try out this latest version, if I can.
I sincerely appreciate any feedback any of you can provide to help me resolve this one way or another.

If you only have custom battles and historical battles, you have the MENU for multiplayer. You need to copy the files under sp game edu backup into their respective locations.

Are you telling me that the installer "routinely" (or sometimes) places the files necessary to load the Imperial Campaign que in the wrong location?
Are you saying that there should be a Single Player "SP" backup file located in an "edu backup folder" and if I can find that folder and those files then all I have to do is find where they should have been located and move them there and all should be fine?

I never play multiplayer with this game, only single player. When I checked the Multiplayer menu all it had options for were "change my CD key and Multiplayer and LAN battles, no campaign or Imperial Campaign was available even in multiplayer as an option.
I haven't checked through every folder and looked at every file of the game, could you perhaps be a little more specific with your assistance and please tell me the location of the files under "sp game edu backup" and if I can find them where exactly would be "their respective locations?"
I will continue to attempt to hunt down these files and figure this out if that is all that I have to do, but if you know the folder where these files are located and where they're supposed be be located to play the Imperial Campaign could you please share that information? I think it might help speed the process up for me.

No. But you could have accidentally run the multiplayer shortcut with the Trivial Script and then tried to use a custom shortcut to play afterwards, not using the Trivial Script. Then the SP backup files will not have been copied before running the game, and you're still using the multiplayer fileset. I initially believed it would be better not to detail this, but rather tell you more specifically how to fix your problem. I still have this belief, but as you ask, there you go.

Yes. Or, more precisely, a set of files. The folder is called sp game edu backup, and I believe it is installed under the EB folder. Each file goes in a separate location.

This is not what I'm saying. In fact, I can't understand where you see me commenting on BI at all :inquisitive:. Anyway, many play EB using the BI executable with no problems. Some cannot even get the game to start when BI is installed.

Okay, I've been checking this stuff out as best as I can during the interim.
Now that I'm back I'll tell you what I've turned up so far.
I checked out both the "EB/mp game edu backup/" (3 files: Rome.lnt, export_descr_unit.txt, map.rwm)
&
"EB/sp game edu backup/" (appears to have the same 3 files: Rome.lnt, export_descr_unit.txt, map.rwm)
Don't know if the content of these files are complete, or if they are located where they are supposed to be, and if not, where I should move them to. But I'm thinking that you may have been thinking that one of these folders may have been missing (or missing one or more of these files)? and that may have been the cause of the no-show Imperial Campaign in the single player menu que?
Still checking the other folders to see if something shouts out at me that might be useful for either me or anybody who may attempt to help me solve this problem.

I found a "MENU_ENGLISH" file located in the "EB/Data/ Text/" folder. It seems to describe how things are supposed to happen. I see where the Single player and EB Imperial campaign lines are located, so if the game was reading this file aand it is where it should be then that is not the problem.

The "EB/Data/Maps/Campaign/Imperial_Campaign" folders and files are there. Don't know if a key file is missing that would let the imperial campaign to show in the menu, though.
Okay, I've checked through all of the folders and files in the "EB/Data" section, now on to Documentation....
Nothing obvious under the "Lighting," "Modesty," "preferences," "presets," or "saves" folders.
4 files under "EB/Validation/" (eb.jar, edtftpj.jar, jzlib-1.0.7.jar, & ebIgnoreList.txt) Not sure if the txt file is accurate but I do see a line that has "campaign" in it.
I clicked on the EB/validateInstall.bat file to see what it might tell me. I already downloaded "Java" earlier because it recommended that I do.
I'm running XP with SP3 but I offered a specific checklist to download for the validation comparison "test" so I don't know if any of the following is relavant to anything.
The Validation check listed the following: an "Exception" in the "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: europabarbarorum/ValidateInstall

Still, since I don't really know what I'm looking for, or what to do with it even if I find it, I'm not sure how helpful this exploratory exercise was/or is, unless somebody out there in la-la land can provide me with better insight?
I'm hoping somebody will see this thread and say, ah-yeah! I know what needs to be done and offer me a quick fix here, but I'm afraid I may just be farting in the wind, and the wind is blowing against me....

I only clicked on the "Single Player" shortcut, and only after your suggestion I clicked on the multiplayer que from the game menu. Probably the first time I ever did that, and nothing there was familiar to me.
When the "Single Player" shortcut prompted me for the RTW CD, that is when I did the BI suffix thing, and at least was allowed into the game menu, lacking though it was.
I've never used a "Trivial Script" program, never had a need to before, everything usually kicks in fine with the mods I've downloaded, just lucky so far I guess....
In fact that is what was confusing to me... I was looking for a game.exe file file somewhere, and in the properties all I had were links to the "Trivial Script" to evidently start up the game. Yeah, I guess I did check out the properties of both the SP and MP shortcut icons, but I believe that I only clicked on the SP to see if the game would start....

No, You made no comment what-so-ever regarding a possible BI clash. As I originally specifically asked regarding compatibility with BI as a possible cause for the problem, and you went right to the "sp game edu backup" files as the most likely root cause, so I made a negative assumption that the BI was likely a non-issue in this case.
Evidently it may still be a possible cause, I guess????

Don't know how I could have, and even if I did the first time, I've made three fresh loads with this mod and still have the same problem, so either I'm repeating the same mistake inadvertantly each time, or the only time I clicked on "Multiplayer" mode was from in the game menu, and like said, there was no campaign or Imperial campaign option listed there....
Any other suggestions???? :help:

No those are backup files. For the Trivial Script program to use, but if you don't use that... :shrug:

Nope. That is just what the text on the various buttons should read (in English in your case)...

The *jar files are libraries for the validation program and the program itself; the *txt file is a list of files *not* checked by the validation program.

Forgive me if you have tried this before, but you could manually *copy* over the sp game edu backup files to their appropriate locations using Bovi's instructions.

Well I did as both you and Bovi suggested... I really didn't expect anything different to happen, after all the files that were already in the designated locations were exactly the same as the ones in the back up (at least the txt file was, I could actually read that). But I figured what the hey, maybe something mysterious would happen. But when I clicked on my BI to EB shortcut and anxiously waited for the game music to start to play and the start -up screen to appear all I got was the same old story.:
"Single Player," "Start New Game," "play EB Main Campaign"
"Please select an Item from the list," but there is no list provided just an arrow that takes me back to the previous menu. :no: :wall:
I've gotten along fine without Java up to now, but for the sake of this Mod I went ahead and installed it and reinstalled it again.
I had Java check itself and it said it was installed properly, updated and running as it should.
However when I do the "validateInstall.bat" check I still get the same error code as listed above (previous post).
I've never had the need for a "TrivialScript" program before, but once again, for the sake of this mod I loaded it in all the installs.
I just now clicked on the "EBTrivialScript.exe" and received the following error message in the log.txt:
00:18:11: XMLScriptParser: Couldn't load file: script.xml
00:18:11: Error Parsing file: script.xml
00:18:11: Row: 0 Description: Failed to open file
So obviously this isn't working as it should, but All I can do is try a fresh RTW-BI v1.6 copy and let the damn install program do it's stuff..... again....
I looked at the "EBTrivialScript" manual, hoping it might tell me something, but all I want to do is play this mod for a few hours, I don't want to have to learn how to program the "EBTrivialScript" tool that I imagine is there to save time, not gobble it up.
Of the "extras" that I let the install put on board I like the "Recruitment viewer" (and at least it works for me). and of course the "Building Tree manuals" are useful, but can I install and play this game without saying yes to the damn "EBTrivialScript" management tool? :thumbsdown:
I just have a sneaky feeling that it is this piece of software that is screwing up this mod experience for me... Assuming that is that the downloads of V1.1 & 1.2 were intact.
I've got just about enough patience for one more go at this tonight and then I'm done for awhile.
This new Mod upgrade whetted my appetite like a nice juicy steak, but if I can't eat the damn thing then all it is doing is giving me aheadache and making my stomach growel. :dizzy2:
I will try one more load tonight and this time say "NO" to "EBTrivialScript."
If it still won't let me see the Campaign menu, well, I' no better off than I am now without trying.
I'll post back and let anybody who might be interrested in knowing the results of my last experiment of the evening.....:sweatdrop:

Another fresh install attempt with an unblemished copy of RTW 1.5/BI 1.6
EB vers. 1.1 & 1.2 files downloaded this time from: Atomic Gamer & MegaUpload to hopefully reduce the chance that I may have previously downloaded a corrupt install????

NO "EBTrivialScript" this time....
Didn't seem to make a difference whether "EBTrivialScript was installed or not, same result as described before: No EB Imperial campaign selections to choose from on the Main Campaign screen...
I wonder if someone out there is playing this MOD with RTW-BI v1.6 and has a saved game that they wouldn't mind sharing?
Don't know if that would open up the campaign menu or not?
Just a thought?????
Well, outside of the below information, I'm whipped. I may not be able to play this great looking mod unless I (or someone else) can come up with a viable solution to the problem... I'm stymied right now. :no:
Validation check tells me that I either have a corrupt install or an invalid checklist. I went with the default check list provided by the game for "standard RTW/EB" installation. I am using BI but not BI/Alex(ander) mod, so I don't know if that is screwing it up, probably... But I don't know where to get a checklist that is just for RTW 1.5/BI 1.6 EB????

Thought I'd check in and see if anybody had any additional suggestions on what I might try to do to get the EB Campaign to materialize????
Looks like nada, for now.
I perused through the mismathched results on the Validation check and Most of them appear to be unit based. I couldn't see anything on my scan that looked like it might be immediately related to getting me into the EB Campaign in the first place, so the mismatched check list may just be a side issue to my primary EB concern at the moment.....
I suppose there is a possibility that there is something corrupt in the EB downloads that I've tried thus far, that is inhibiting the Campaign screen?
But I don't know of anyother sites that are hosting this MOD that could download and try to see if it makes a diff?
Anywho, I'll check in from time to time, until my game playing opportunity time for the next few days runs out... Hopefully somebody will see this thread and have something up their sleeve that they think might work....????
The one thing that I won't be able to try myself for awhile will be to get my original RTW CD mated again with this PC and see if that opens up the Campaign??? Maybe there is just something about BI that is holding up the show???
I wonder if that turns out to be the case if I get a campaign started in RTW mode, then go back to my BI disc, would it let me in to that campaign, or allow me to start a new one then?
A quick check would be if anybody in the EB gaming community is successfully playing EB v.1.2 with a RTW-BI v.1.6 disc in their PC?
If anybody is and has (or wouldn't mind starting) a fresh campaign save (preferably Romani faction) and then wouldn't mind emailing me the SAV file I could insert it into my EB saved game folder and see if that opens the program up for me?
Right now that is the best thought that I can come up with, anybody out there game to see if if that might work???
I would very much appreciate an opportunity to try this experiment... Or any other suggestions.... that Anyone can come up with....
I really do want to try this MOD out if there is anyway possible to do so.... Please :help:

For BI you will probably want to search the Unofficial Minimods subforum for the Unofficial BI Installer. Because, as you might've guessed by now to run EB off the BI.exe there are additional steps involved. (I don't really know what & how as I don't have BI & never tried to install EB on BI...)

Okay gents, here’s what I do and why…
Once I discovered all the great MODs that opened up a whole new wonderful world of life for Rome: Total War (RTW), I also discovered that for the least amount of conflict and best game play that these Mods preferred their own unique & solo install to the base game.
So I purchased a large hard drive so that each mod could have their own separate install to an unadulterated version of RTW.
When the RTW Barbarian Invasion (BI) add-on became available many, but not all, of the Mods were adapted to it, evidently to take advantage of the modified game engines better features, esp. allowing for better unit tracking and intuitively more aggressive strategic & tactical maneuvering.
I found myself preferring the features of the BI add-on to RTW and discovered through these forums that many, but not all, of the otherwise exclusive RTW Mods could be coerced to play through the BI game engine by inserting a suffice to the game execute shortcut (i.e. "D:\Games\Total War\Europa Barbarorum v0.81a_BI 1.6\RomeTW-BI.exe" -mod:eb -nm -show_err)
During my past deployments I discovered the very limited net access, especially for downloads and I didn’t want to take all of my CDs, etc with me, so I took a USB hard drive loaded with a bunch of mp3 music, a few of my favorite movies, and some of my very favorite games (such as Total War) and just a handful of my precious original CDs required to play them (since we are NOT allowed to make a back-up of these CD/DVD’s by the manufacturers). I carried my BI disk so that when I did have the time, and access to a generator, I could play those Mods that were compatible with BI on a notebook PC.
So I’m back, for awhile, and I discover that there are some great looking updates to some of these Mods (i.e. Europa Barbarorum), so I download EB 1.1 Full install, and EB 1.2 update patch and try to play it with the BI disk that I have with me, because all my other stuff is in storage in another state.
I have several clean installs of RTW v.1.5 that I have loaded BI v.1.6 into.
I make a separate copy of the base RTW game, give it a different name when I want to make an unadulterated MOD install.
My last version of EB (Europa Barbarorum version 0.81a) plays without a hitch (so far) through BI using the shortcut suffix, so I load EB 1.1 into the RTW folder (not the BI folder) in a fresh copy of RTW-BI v.1.6. I then follow with the EB 1.2 update patch.
Since the shortcut provided by the install is strictly for the RTW CD, I use my suffix ("D:\Games\Total War\Europa Barbarorum v1.2_BI 1.6\RomeTW-BI.exe" -mod:eb -nm -show_err). This allows the game screen to open up and tell me that I have EB version 1.2 on board.
I click "Single Player," "Start New Game," "play EB Main Campaign"
The screen then tells me: "Please select an Item from the list," but there is no list provided just an arrow that takes me back to the previous menu, ad infinitum.
That pretty much sums it up.
You can read through the previous posts what I have done thus far to trouble shoot this. I am crippled by not having my original RTW CD with me to determine if that is all that it takes to open up the main campaign and if so, then likely all other factors are probably in order, except this MOD version just doesn’t like the BI CD.
So, in lieu of purchasing another RTW CD and patching it up to v. 1.5, I was hoping that somebody in the EB world could tell me whether they could verify that the game does or does not play with the BI CD?
If somebody is playing it with the BI CD, and likely using a suffix to do so, then perhaps they could tell me what additional steps, if any, they used to make the game play for them, as I would be more inclined to think at that point that I may have a corrupt install.
Or perhaps they could email me a SAV from the beginning of an EB campaign (preferably Romani) and I could use that to see if it might open up the campaign screen for me???
This EB update has some new stuff that I’m unfamiliar with (i.e. the "TrivialScript" program) that it seems to rely on for proper game function and I don’t know if that is causing a conflict with the BI CD???
Anyway in order to narrow down the variables I either need to acquire another RTW CD or find somebody who is in-fact playing the game with BI to pass on a Campaign SAV to me to help further trouble-shoot.
But I am open to try any other suggestion to get this MOD to play for me while I still have some time to play it….????:help:

So, to answer my own questions:
YES, there are people in the EB gaming community playing EB v1.2 with BI.
Unfortunetly, due to the complexities of the updates to this mod, a simple shortcut suffix will not suffice, as I have found out.
But I also found out that all my downloads, and installs have been correct, I just needed something more to make everything work…
And FORTUNETLY, thanks to the efforts of Ferromancer, the apparently necessary fix for those of us wishing to play this mod with the BI CD is available in the quick download listed above! (and below!) :yes:
And here are Ferromancer’s simple instructions for those of us still using Windows XP
Instructions (Last edited by Ferromancer; 07-26-2009 at 10:28).
Here is what you're supposed to do. Since you have windows XP, all you have to do is:
1) Install RTW (just use the default directory)
2) Install BI (just use the default directory)
3) Install the BI patch
4) install EB 1.1 (USE THE DIRECTORY THAT RTW INSTALLED TO IN PROGRAM FILES, something like c:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\, not EB's default directory--that directory is for VISTA users running under high security mode)
5) install EB 1.2
6) Run my installer (just use the default directory. if everything went well, the button is not greyed out)
Here now is my shortcut link using Ferromancer’s fix.
"D:\Games\Total War\Europa Barbarorum v1.2_BI 1.6\RomeTW-BI.exe" -mod:eb -show_err
The shortcut his installer provides allows the intro videos to play, which is fine, as I haven’t seen them for awhile now, and EB may have a few unique ones of their own creation worth watching.

I believe that I did ask that very question in my very first post as a "possible solution" to the problem of the EB Campaign screen not showing up in the menu.
However, my question, as worded, described the primary symptom of the problem, whereas asking out right "how to play EB on BI" would have implied a treatment/cure for a definitive diagnosis, of which there wasn't enough initial data to make such an assumption at the time, though I strongly suspected that was the first thing that should be addressed to rule out what I thought to be the most likely variable.
But suffice it to say the question was asked, several times, in a variety of ways, as the thread progressed and only a couple of posts ago was the direction given that allowed the solution to be found.
But I strongly agree with you that the thread went entirely too long to ultimately arrive at a viable solution. Whether that happened because my question/s were poorly worded, or because those who sought to help me were just as unsure as I was of the best answer, is a moot point now. :smash:
Suffice it that I am extremely greatful that a satisfying solution was ultimately arrived, so neither of us should belabor the fact that it took several posts to get there, I'm just be happy that we finally arrived! :beam:
I will take this opportunity at final closure to this thread to state that I am now several turns into an EB campaign using BI, have taken Tarentum and am on the way to Rhegium, as the Romani faction, and have had not a single problem, thus far.
As I stated in my previous post, If I do encounter any glitches that I cannot remedy without assistance, I will be sure to post them in a different thread, and hopefully I will word my question/s to better meet your satisfaction, should that occur. :whip:
I refer anyone else who might be experiencing a similar problem to check out my previous post for a quick and likely answer. :yes:

kind of related , but i use the alex.exe .. whenever i load multiplayer (rtw.exe) and go back to alex.exe SP , the campaign does not show ... so i have to load rtw.exe SP then quit then load alex.exe SP and the campaign mode appears again.
