View Full Version : How to make bodyguards look like right faction on EB with Alexander?

Hi - i installed EB and made the file changes Varcan suggested to get EB to run on the Alexander engine.

It mostly runs fine, but when playing Carthaginians my generals' bodyguard units look like Alexander's Macedonian companions from RTW Alexander.

Can anyone tell me how to change them back to looking like the EB 1.2 Carthaginian bodyguard?

Seriously, how did you manage to do that? Unless you're using some extra mod or installer, getting EB to work on alex.exe properly requires only one extra trait in the traitfiles and a modified shortcut with the -noalexander command. That and the chat_filter.san file in your EB/data folder.
That's without the night battles, but even that doesn't require you messing with the UI pictures, or the EDU in any way.

Anyway; first check if the dictionary line in the EDU is right. It should read the following: "carthaginian_cavalry_generals_bodyguard".
If it isn't that, then you've editted the EDU and messed up. Always make backups!

If that's okay, check to see if the right picture is there.
Look under "EB/UI/units/egypt" for a file called "#carthaginian_cavalry_generals_bodyguard.tga" and under "EB/UI/unit_info/egypt" for one called "carthaginian_cavalry_generals_bodyguard_info.tga".

If those two picture are that of the carthaginian bodyguard's and the dictionary line refers to these two pictures, then I have no clue what the problem is.
If those two picture are that of the alexander companion cavalry; first of all, why did you overwrite those files o_O? Second, other then a complete reinstall, you could use the picture of the sacred band cavalry; just make a copy of those picture and rename them to the above mentioned filenames.

Edit; as an aside, was it really necessary to post this question not only here, but also in the general EB section here on the .org and in both the general and submod sections on the EB fora on the TWcenter? That does not get you a answer sooner, it will only get people to ignore you.

Ehm; was that raised eyebrow directed to me or to Dunadd?

Thanks very much Raygerius - i'll look.

Oh and I used files Varcan put a link to to get EB to work with Alex because the main EB with Alex thread's first page just said 'You will need the Alexander files" but didnt make clear what they were (found them in another thread eventually)

I've got the EB 1.2 minimods pack plus Darth's AI mod and Camillus' AI mod apart from EB itself.

Is the EDU - the export_descr_unit file in the RTW/EB/Data folder?

I found it and it seems right

;91
type carthaginian cavalry generals bodyguard
dictionary carthaginian_cavalry_generals_bodyguard ; General's Bodyguard
category cavalry
class heavy
voice_type General_1
soldier carthaginian_cavalry_sacredband, 10, 0, 1
mount half armoured horse

The horses now look right too, but the unit have the purple and yellow shield design of Alexander's companions and Alexander's lion standard.

Don't understand this part. There's no folder called UI in the EB folder. There is one in EB/Data called UI but it doesnt have any folder named Egypt, has one named Egyptian, but all full of tga files which (i think?) are for campaign map graphics and not units (and why do you look in an Egypt folder for Carthage stuff?). EDIT - My generals do look like Alexander or his Macedonian generals on the campaign map though.

"Raygerius"? Did you just latinized my screenname?
Anyway:
You will need the Alexander files
Out of curiosity; you'll off course need the alexander expansion for this. Erm, what do you mean with "files", please don't tell me someone posted a downloadlink to alex.exe? o_O

Your EDU entry looks okay, so that can't be the problem.
There's no folder called UI in the EB folder.
Gah! Sorry I didn't had my coffee when I typed that this morning.
Correct directy paths:
Rome - Total War\EB\Data\UI\UNIT_INFO\EGYPT
Rome - Total War\EB\Data\UI\UNITS\EGYPT

and why do you look in an Egypt folder for Carthage stuff
Carthage is internally called Egypt. Also; unless it's a unit that uses the merc slot (in which case it goes in the MERC folder), any faction that has access to that unit must have that unit's pictures in their respective folders in both UNIT_INFO and UNITS.
You can easily see what unit has access to the unit by looking at the ownership line in the EDU. For the Carthaginian bodyguard it should be Egypt and Slave.

If you look in those two folder and the correct unit pictures are there, then I have no clue what the problem could be.
And as I play EB on alex.exe without this problem, I can only conclude that you somehow messed up with either the installation or your modding; the only advice I can give you then is to double check everything you've done so far.

Thanks Raygereio - and sorry for getting your name wrong before (i'm not actually biased in favour of Romans, just misremembered it).

Those files exist and they look like Carthaginian general unit should - except that their shield is purple with the yellow Macedonian star on it - and when you see them on the battlefield they have Alexander's lion banner as well as the Carthaginian banner. Not that important i suppose.

To the carthaginian bodyguard that looks like Alexander Macedonian Campanions from RTW Alex.

Don't worry about it, it amused me. :smiley2:

Wel, as long as you don't have any CTD's it isn't that important, I guess. But to be honest I'm still scratching my head as how you've managed to generate this little bug. (<-humor)
