I saw the movie of El Cid on the TV today. It was great (loads of feudal seargents) but does anyone have any comments on the historical accuracy of the film (i can only assume the whole thing is one big contrived heroic artistic impression (see braveheart)). Also does anyone have any links to relevan setes that i might indulge my new found interest in the subject.

El-Zid (meaning "The Lord" in arabic, even though Al-Zhid would be a better spelling) really wasn't that huge, but there was some bard who made a big deal out of him. *shrugs*
Haven't read the poems and don't know the story, except what i learned in Age of Empires 2, the Conquerors Expansion. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

All I know is that in MTW he is crap. Comes with a bunch of crap Jinettes (One of my most loathed units) and is VERY disloyal. Once you bump him up with titles he is a good governor, but he can leave his crap jinetes in his fort for all I care.
I have the book but I can never be arsed to read it. I think he was part of the spanish army during the RE conquista...chucking those filthy moors out of spain and the like. A powerful warrior by all accounts...again if he existed.

From what little I have read about the subject, El Cid is a character very much like King Arther or Robin Hood in that sparse historical facts have been mixed with so much story telling and legend. Most of what is thought to be known comes from an old anonymous poem that is well revered in Spanish literature.
Anyhow, if you like Charleton Heston's portrayal of El Cid, then you also might like a movie he made called the "The War Lord"
He plays a Norman lord in the 11th century.
It is about as medieval as you can get.
I haven't seen it in years, but since you made me think of it with the mention of El Cid, I think I will see if it is available to rent. Some pretty good medieval battle scenes if I remember correctly.
I found this review on the Web:

Thanks people. I'm surprised i managed to make such a coherant post when off my face on stella and didn't even embarass myself. Bit of a collectors item really.
Jinettes really do suck, have to be the worst unit in the game unless by chance the enemy are entirely slow foot troops with no missile units.
Don't underestimate the Jinettes. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
I had camels and it took quite a while to catch the bastards once.
How does the portrait of el cid in the game looks?

Moved to the monastery.
The monks there deserve to have something new to discuss... seeing how they lack the babethread and all...
