SUCH a good game... completely marred by crappy artificial intelligence.
Actually, what i'm referring to (and i realize that this has been discussed before ad nauseum) is the blatant and excessive cheating by the CPU. How opponents can continue to crank out unit after unit while i'm scrounging for enough koku for some YA is beyond me. The CPU is amazing. I can virtually vanquish their entire army on all fronts, only to watch helplessly a year later as a huge horde does the death march over my lands.
I'm sorry, but at higher levels, this game is simply an exercise in frustration.
Oh well. Back to the dusty shelf for you.

Well you really can't say that. This kind of game is the first of it's type and the AI is having trouble cause is the most complicated game ever. It has almost the same aspects as real life and there are some cases that even the best online players will freeze if they are ina certain situation they won't know what to do.
The AI is easy so try playing in expert difficulty. Their advanced players will give you a somewhat hard time.

I more or less agree that the decision to let the AI deficit spend on the strategic map was a poor one, and the developers are well versed to make every effort to remove it. Such is a mar to any game, but remember, it will be fixed in 1.13.
However, bashing STW's AI in general is uncalled for. Apart from cheating, the comp's strategies are usually very sound; it retreats if it judges it can't win, and if necessary, goes on a rampage in your rear rather than taking your main armies head on. And the tactical AI is actually *way* above average; I've never seen any other strategy game where even the Easy AI was able to trounce newbies so thoroughly simply through the use of the game's inherent tactical options, not cheating or rushing. Most strategy game AIs make themselves "hard" through the use of steamroller tactics like the machines they are; STW lives.
Sure, it does seem easier when you've spent several months mastering the game. You can win most tactical battles even when outnumbered, even on Expert. But still, occasionally, the AI gives you a run for your money (especially in the early game). And people who have had the patience to bother with some C&C that long are rare indeed.

It is not that the AI is so weak, the problem is that many of us gamers are very good players http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif. Most other games are nowhere near as sophisticated as Shogun.

"Uchigatana" or the 'hitting' sword, 60cm long, weilded with one hand, easily splits plate armour. Musashi says "Whenever you cross swords with an enemy you must not think of cutting him either strongly or weakly; just think of cutting and killing him".
I have found the AI to be good enough to keep you honest on the tactical level. On the strategic map, the AI varies between poor and clever.
Not all daimyos were Takeda Shingen after all. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif There had to be some Ambrose Burnside taishos too!
The AI is a machine, and it has an automated peasant-making factory. So it can mass-produce new soldiers in minutes, whereas we humans must breed them and educate them, which takes years.
But, I feel compelled to correct you in one small technicality... 'Artificial Intelligence' is spelled 'A-I', which resembles the steak sauce 'A-1'... hence the true meaning behind the Zen of the STW AI: all your men are steak, and the CPU is the sauce, baby!

Lord....
I'll bet that the real Mori felt a lot like you do. He probably groused that he'd defeated all his neighboring opponents hands-down and then that Hideyoshi bastard showed up with his huge armies, supported by the plushest lands in Japan, and put an end to all his dreams. Then the same fate befell those on the other islands of Japan.
Defeating the horde at expert level is more than than mastery in tactical prowess. Preparing for battles against great numbers takes as much in planning as does the successful ordering of individual units on the battlefield.
So, take that game back off the shelf and hone your strategic skills to the same level as your tactical skills. There's still a lot of play left! hehe

I wonder... was the last Japanese PM to grace the news a descendant of the Mori clan? Heck, his name was 'Yoshiro MORI'!
Perhaps the real Mori was forced to recognize Hideyoshi and was not overrun by rampaging hordes... does any history nut here know about this?

Also realize that as we can learn new strategies and realize our mistakes, while a computer program refers to the same instructions over and over, but sometimes different depending on the code. So unless the game has a neural net type code, don't expect the AI to learn from it's mistakes, especially as fast as you do.
Consider the fact that even if it learned, it can only do that whenever it's running, while you have hours of time away from the game(well some of us http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif).
Hmmm, just thought of Black & White AI merged with STW.

I don't think having the AI eat peasants randomly would serve to reduce the amount of threads like this. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Even if i hadn't posted this, it wouldn't have changed anything about the AI... even if i HAD been eaten. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
But i'm gonna give this game another shot when the expansion comes out in three weeks. I REALLy like the game... it's just that it can be a tad frustrating at times.

Ah, Solypist, you show the wisdom fitting of your rank with those words. A fitting way for this thread to die.
