View Full Version : Ktistai

The description says, "Thanks to wealth and military education, they are elite warriors who know how to use the bow and the falx, the two most important weapons in Getic society."
Now, with the RTW engine, I don't believe it is possible to give this unit a falx. With M2TW, though, I believe that there is a dismount function (correct me if I'm mistaken in this). Would it be possible to give the Ktistai the arrow and lance when they are mounted, and then give them to option to dismount and wield a falx?
I cannot think of a more epic unit than this it if it were possible.

Units in M2TW cannot dismount.
Theres no reason why they couldn't have a falx in RTW either, unless you mean having a falx plus bow and spear in which case no.
The "unmounted" units in M2TW are just normal infantry units using the skin and model of cavalry soldiers. In ETW you get units that can truly dismount like dragoons etc.

maybe thinking of the old mtw? where you could dismount units before the battle started.
Darn it... I play very little M2TW, but I saw a few units with names like "Dismounted Knights" and such. Somehow I assumed that units could dismount. :shame:

i know , sucks ... the option to dismount units before battle was pretty awesome , yet they had to take it out of the RTW engine ...!

I wouldn't mind if they got the falx instead of lance. Too many lances, not enough fun stuff. Though the animation would be abit mysterious. Would it be a sickle sword like their elite phalanx or a 2 handed actual falx?
At any rate, those guys would be murder to fight against with horses with that much AP and lethality...
Swinging a falx on a horse... :inquisitive:
Then again, look at Traikioi Peltastai - they carry a one-handed falx with a lethality of .26, same as the two-handed version.
And for reference, I believe Tarabostes use a sica.
Yes they do.~:)
Afaik only empire has this options, to dismount units so too bad nothing we can do.:(
Well, it was nice to think about. Thanks for conclusively answering my question.
I suppose I might play around with this a little in EB1.

I rather give them a falx for a melee weapon than a boring old lance :laugh4:

Tsch, no one wants to get their shooters mowed down in melee, HA-lancers are much more versatile and useful than HAs, as boring as that may be in your eyes.
I like the ability to gun, uh, bow down my opponents and then with concentrated charges break their morale.

mowed down in melee
Why do you leave HA in melee? I think you're confused there and mean 'on the charge' instead of 'melee.' Oh well...

Why have falxes for Ktistai if they're not to be used, then?
The only sensible way to use HAs in close combat are (if necessary, repeated) charges into flanks/rears and the chasing of routing units, I agree, and thus lances are much more useful.

I found a use for both of them. When controled by a player, HA lancers are real horsemen of apoalypse, but I have a good experience with sword cavalry too, especially in cav-cav melee battles, Gallic Brihentin with longswords, Hellenic elites with AP kopis and elite cataphracts with maces wre good examples. Melee cavalry serve as my FM hunters.
An example of HA swordsmen are Baktrioi Hippotoxotai with kopis and I am able to destroy Saka and Dahae nobles with neglible casualties with them. Archery duels would cause too many casualties. Ktistai with sickle sword as a secondary - high lethality and perhaps AP would have their role - as archers against infantry, as melee fighters against cavalry.
