I believe it might well have been.Got in a book somewhere only I can't seem to find it at the moment, and no luck on the web so far.
All the sites I've found just refer to him as Saladin.

I don't believe that is his Arabic name, but I really am not sure. I know that it says his name in the back of the manual (you did read the manual, right? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) where they talk about all the different historical campaigns and stuff. Sorry I can't be of more help. I'd look it up if I had the manual with me, but I'm at work right now. Pooey. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

In which part of the manual?

If memory serves me correctly, his Arabic name was Salah al-Din (hence Saladin). What is more, his family were from Takrit in Iraq, the hometown of good old Saddam. The fact that Saddam never mentions this scourge of the Crusaders is because Saladin was also a Kurd

I think Nur al-Din was, historically, one of his relatives. All my uni books are at home. Will check tonight.

I've seen Saladin in the game, but can't remember the name they gave him. He had a huge number of stars

Saldins arabic name was Salah al-Din Yusuf bin Ayub
but now I know who Nur Al-Din was. He was the one who beated the second crusade and fought against the crusaders before Saladin. It would be more fun with Saladin but atleast I got someone who can be compared to him.

I put him in Egypt and gave him titles and then He got the vices often drunk and when I putted him in Sinai he got the vices educated. Then I sent him with my army that mostly consist of cavalry to Cyprus and he died in battle against the spearmans. Well luckly I saved before he died.

I got him when I was the English. The Egyptian king died with no heirs and Nur al-Din was the leader of the Egyptian army in Antioch. Since I had once held Antioch for a brief time(one turn) about fifty years earlier, Antioch and and Nur al-Din joined the English. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I married him to one of my daughters and he changed his name to Sir al-Din. Kind of funny I thought. It was kind of hard to replenish his Bedouin camel unit though.

Yeah I have noticed the great Nur al Din several times, he seems to have Skilled Attacker as his Vice.
I have faced him several times and a great efforts to kill him fast... No need to recreate the 2nd Crusade.

If anyone gets the chance, it would be useful to post the stats and date acquired of this historical leader in the "building historical leaders" thread. I'm going to do this with any I encounter in future and hopefully one day, we'll have a nice list of historical leaders to peruse.

I guess being aware of leaders will only matter for gameplay if you can lose out on a leader by not building within a historical window. Anyone know if this is true? As England on early, I always get Sir Tancred, Strongbow, Simon de Montfort, Thomas Becket and Guy of Gisbourne so I am a little relaxed about it - I do make a point of buying the odd assassin towards the end of the 1100s just to be sure of getting Guy, however.

Nur al Din is rank 6 & comes with the vice expert attacker, his piety & acumen are all around 6. Saladin appears later in the game around very late 1200's or early 1300's I think, i've only played one egyptian campaign & I took the lesser victory in 1262

Not as weird as it sounds. Richard Lionheart actually planned to have Saladin marry his sister and ally with the English king. But she nixed the deal...
