i was doing a little combining of games in my head the other day. there are some good games out there. some are pay to play while others are freebies. some are multi games and some are not. and i've seen some very interesting things done here and there.

one of these interesting things is in Asheron's Call. it's a pay to play game over on microsoft's 'the zone'. it's a fantasy roll play game (frpg) done in real time and high end graphics and sound on an almost true 3d massive map. and here's the kicker...it can house 2000 players on one server all playing at the same time in the same game. i think you know where i'm going with this ;)

imagine shogun within the same environment.

imagine that the entire map of japan was your playing field and that you could conceivably walk or ride clear across japan without ever having to 'go to the map'. there is no campaign game. you are IN the campaign game. you are IN japan, not overlooking a small map of it.

imagine having 200 players in your clan and you are the daimyo. each player has their own army and resources and ability to increase both. castles are full blown fortresses with battlements and all the trimmings.

communication with your clan and others is done the same way the japanese did back then. it's slow. timing becomes crucial. there is no AI. you are fighting against 1000 other players who are also doing the same. diplomacy is what you make with other real players. backstabbing and assasinations cause a 'rebirth'. if you were a general in your 'last life', then you may still have skills in warfare, but you no longer have the station and must rise to power once again.

imagine a war where not 8 players are fighting, but 800.

and the game doesnt end until someone is crowned Shogun.

imagine the politics, the diplomacy, the warfare, the barriers of old japan, particularly in transportation and communication.

imagine 10,000 heavy cav thundering across a cool, dew laden plain on a foggy morning, going to engage an enemy they can barely see through the mist.

imagine looking out over your lands and your clan and knowing that some day you'll be SHOGUN!

imagine.

It sounds good, the only downside is everyone wont work together, maybe a few here and there but everyone would want to be shogun so there would be a lot of stabbing in the back. sounds like a good game with people that you can trust though.

something like what you are talking about was done with _the best_ real time strategy game ever: total annihilation. after the game had been out for awhile and gotten all patched up, the developer cavedog released boneyard. it was a multiplayer service where you could play in regular multiplayer games, or you could participate in the huge persistent world metagame going on. when you created your account for boneyard you chose an allegiance (either arm or core), and then whenever you participated in the metagame you would fight for that side. it was very fun. if you went into the metagame there was a galaxy map, and many planets. you could see which side had control of each planet, and which planets were contested each day. clicking on a contested planet took you into a chatroom for that planet where you then could enter a battle on a map which would have corresponding geographical features. each side had a homeworld planet, and the goal of the metagame was to take control of the other side's home planet. http://www.cavedog.com/boneyards/whatis.htm

unfortunately when infrogames bought gt interactive they canned cavedog, just as boneyard was coming to maturity. it is for this reason that i absolutely despise infrogames and am going to pirate every game they publish.

the idea sounds great, and i belive that people would work together, if they could communicate, buti dont think that my computer could handle it http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

Even if we ended up with say 64 players (representing the seven clans plus ronin) and set a long timelimit eg. six hours, there would be an awful lot of fun and backstabbing etc to get to be Shogun.

When the side attacking has a significant numerical advantage it could automatically resolve the fight and thus save time so players could battle it out in relatively even situations.
