i was doing a little combining of games in my head the other day. there are some good games out there. some are pay to play while others are freebies. some are multi games and some are not. and i've seen some very interesting things done here and there.
one of these interesting things is in Asheron's Call. it's a pay to play game over on microsoft's 'the zone'. it's a fantasy roll play game (frpg) done in real time and high end graphics and sound on an almost true 3d massive map. and here's the kicker...it can house 2000 players on one server all playing at the same time in the same game. i think you know where i'm going with this ;)
imagine shogun within the same environment.
imagine that the entire map of japan was your playing field and that you could conceivably walk or ride clear across japan without ever having to 'go to the map'. there is no campaign game. you are IN the campaign game. you are IN japan, not overlooking a small map of it.
imagine having 200 players in your clan and you are the daimyo. each player has their own army and resources and ability to increase both. castles are full blown fortresses with battlements and all the trimmings.
communication with your clan and others is done the same way the japanese did back then. it's slow. timing becomes crucial. there is no AI. you are fighting against 1000 other players who are also doing the same. diplomacy is what you make with other real players. backstabbing and assasinations cause a 'rebirth'. if you were a general in your 'last life', then you may still have skills in warfare, but you no longer have the station and must rise to power once again.
imagine a war where not 8 players are fighting, but 800.
and the game doesnt end until someone is crowned Shogun.
imagine the politics, the diplomacy, the warfare, the barriers of old japan, particularly in transportation and communication.
imagine 10,000 heavy cav thundering across a cool, dew laden plain on a foggy morning, going to engage an enemy they can barely see through the mist.
imagine looking out over your lands and your clan and knowing that some day you'll be SHOGUN!
imagine.
