Personal Avatars Please!!!

Unfortunately, one of my biggest disappointments about this site was the fact that we had to use pre-selected avatars. Is there any chance we can change that? I'm sure the majority of the Orgahs would be mature enough to use non-explicit avatars. Hell, all I wanted was the ETW Prussian flag.

I mean, look at the Mount and Blade forum at Tale Worlds! They have a much less mature and developed community as ourselves, and they do not use any avatars that would be denied here (Or at least not that gets past the Moderators, who either are quick to perma-ban people, or people there are really immature. I've seen dozens of perma-banned people who post only a few days ago.)

My reasoning is that anyone who uses an avatar deemed inappropriate, explicit, or offensive in any way would be taken off by the Moderators anyway. We already have full control of signatures; so we can basically have a whole signature to be trusted with, but not a tiny little avatar? nonsensical if you ask me. Anyone else feel this way?

This issue was discussed a while back in the watchtower. The reason for only using totalwar avatars was a stylistic choice. I don't believe it has anything to do with worries of vulgarities or innapropriate content. This decision was put to a vote and the anti-expansionists prevailed.

Of course, we're still waiting for someone to do the necessary editing and uploading of the ETW images. I'm sure that no one would complain if the glorious person who did the work included a few faction flags in the selection :wink:

Yeah, that is peculiar. I have taken note of that too. And yet profanity is unrestricted on that site, at least when it is not seriously directed at someone.

I love the beautiful uniformity of this site. There is one thing I cannot stand about forums, and that is custom avatars. I almost had an orgasm when I found this site - seriously. There is great beauty in uniformity, splendid sense of order, of organisation. Of everything that is not 4chan/Facebook/YouTube/etc -ish.


The simple fact that the forums are aesthetically superior disarms all your logic, and sense, as well as the support of liberal restrictions policies, which I too agree with.

If you're voluntering then I'd suggest you put together a range of ETW avatars and pass them to TosaInu. If they're acceptable I'm sure he would add them to the pool.

They would have to be exactly the same size as the current avatars (56*56 IIRC but don't quote me on that) and a thin border of some kind is traditional. Small file sizes are a must in order to preserve fast page loads, most of our current ones are in GIF format.

50*70 will be the correct size then. I made my own avatar and I was never any good at picture editing; I remember having a devil of a job cutting it to size. I guess after my 20th attempt no one had the heart to tell me it was still wrong, hehe.

for an avatar? doubt it. those were made to the required specifications of a 50X70 avatar, though I looked, and having it at 90X70 is a much better ratio. of course, it's not up to us mortals.

If Tosa approves these, I might make avatars of maybe significant units and some other factions, so lets hope he likes em!

I would suggest rotating the original flag pics 90 degrees (clockwise, if I'm not mistaken), then resizing to prevent the stretched look.

By "resize", I mean take the original from the game files, rotate 90 degrees clockwise, then resize them to fit the 50(horizontal)x70(vertical) size. Rotating them will allow you to fit them within the required dimensions without skewing the aspect ratio (too much). The flags will look like they are hanging from their sides, instead of flying on a pole, but it's the best you can get with the given dimensions.

No, I edited the images and cropped them and majority of them have the default border which came with the flag. (Austria, France, Ottoman, Poland, Prussia, Russia, Spain and US)

hmmm....I like Beskars better, no offence. most of them look really good (like U.P., GB, France, Marathas, Ottomans, Sweden, U.S) but the ones with symbols (Austria, Russia, Prussia, Spain, PL) just look a bit odd.

We -do- have a few notable units used as avatars rather than just Leaderheads, why not faction symbols?

Joke aside, yes, a bit more variety for the avatars would be nice. Obviously, allowing custom avatars would be a bad idea (just have a look at TWC if you think otherwise). But more choice would be a sound decision. You just have to take them from the TW games and well-known mods (I'm thinking of EB here, if the team is fine with the idea). I'm not even sure ETW portraits are available at the moment.

Who is that bloke, a mod I believe, who had that eye that would sparkle and shine every few seconds? That was an animated image, which is even more impressive than Andres' custom avatar. I think Meth should have his avatar though. Just like Andres, it is an edit of a regular TW portrait. Unlike Andres, Methuselah's wish-avatar is more conservative in its nature of modification. Also, unlike Andres, Methuselah is erhm, well, you know who... - which is why he is not going to get the avatar most likely.

I understand, though, that others may follow the suit and demand custom avatars as well, even the conservatively modded one like Meth has. But you short-sighted admins allowed Andres to have his thing, so now the precedent for rebellion has been set!!! :smash:

And in any case, most people aren't so strikingly visually unique In Real Life that they are never mistaken for somebody else either. People seem to cope with that just fine too: most of them got a fairly unique character, which tends to help though. :juggle2:

The discussion is one of esthetics vs. individualism. Most members like the uniform TW avatars and the amount available should be large enough to express ones 'personality'.
That being said, maybe if the demand is big enough, individual request could be manufactured by trusted members in the existing design of the .Orgs avatars. This works quite well on the 'giant in the playground' forum. avatar request thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122056)

Phil, I think you should get on producing the full set of Avatars for the .org. I can see no reason as to why they would not be used. The Avatars you're designing fall within the rules for Avatars here at the .org.

AFAIK, all avatars are avaliable for all users with a few exceptions:

Moderator avatars are for mods only.
The few one off avatars are for those people only.

Some members had their own custom avatar, t'was a one off.

Sigurd, is the one that stands out in my mind, as for current avatars, see Andres.

Neither of those are pulled from ingame, therefore custom one offs.

TosaInu was going to upload some ETW avatars this weekend. So check your User CP on monday and you should be able to find some.
Oh, AFAIK nothing on the .Org is 'unlocked' with a certain post count.

Avatar choices used to be limited by postcount, sets of avatars were unlocked at various round numbers like 200, 500, 1K, etc. But this is no longer the case, the limitations were eliminated around 2006, IIRC.

The European generals and admirals are ready and will be made available ASAP. I'm doing the EU ministers and kings before the weekend. I'll do the Indian ones (read from INDIA) next week.

Someone else will have to do the American natives as I don't have warpath (unles there are no aditional portraits added).
