A great game, released soon. What does everyone think of it?
I'm awaiting it with glee....however...
The OFLC (Office of Film and Literature Classification, i believe) handles all the classication (ratings) for games in australia. Games only go up to MA15+ so if the game is not suitable for a 15 year old, it is refused sale in Australia.
Left4Dead 2 has been refused sale as it stands now, for:
'high impact violence' against 'living humans infected with a rabies-like virus'
So we will get a toned down version, if at all...
Or we just import it. :laugh4:

What the hell is that? Banning video games because they don't fit the australian rating standards. Terrible.
If I remeber correctly they did something similar with Manhunt, but people imported it independantly anyway.

First one I was aware of was GTA 3. Was released, then pulled off for a few months until the toned it down. Whats the point! the game was released for one day!
Aren't you Aussies screwed over enough by delayed release dates?
I don't own L4D, and don't really know how it is distributed or updated. If game updates are via Steam, would those in Oz that smuggle the L4D2 hardcopy in be able to get patches? :inquisitive:

Something along those lines.
So long as you agree I'm not overlooking any deeper meaning. :waves hand and makes everything relating to that disappear:
Anything suggesting piracy is strictly against the org's rules.
The TOR references are allowed to remain as that program blocks torrent networks by default. One assumes it is mentioned as a way of hiding your IP in order to access a legitimate game's shop and buy a copy.

Yeah, I use TOR to bypass school blocking and I heard it was developed originally to get past Egypt's firewall stuff, so Aussies have nothing to worry about if you use TOR.

To be fair, I'd like to reiterate that such a possibility would only be advised if he could not import it -in any way-. Being that he can, he is comitting a felony no less, albeit giving money to the developers for their work. But no harm done. My views on the matter are not for this part of the forum, so I'll digress.

The fun is in the team.
I came across a group of kiwi's in game, started playing with them, and I've never had more fun.
Silly things like having 3 kiwi's do the beached az thing while pouncing in the air and saying "Catch me zoey!" and then making stupid om nom nom noises.
Everything is funnier with the accent.

CURSE YOU BROKE-TOBER! :wall:
Welly, Monk, there's only two routes to go if money's tight—pre-order to lock in the 10% discount, or wait a few months for a promotion. (The latter is how I got hooked up with L4D in the first place; they were having some sort of $10 weekend deal, so I bit.)
If it's any consolation, the demo is supposed to unlock to the general public in a week or so.

I can understand that, sure. Then the best thing (IMHO) is to check the Steam Specials tab (http://store.steampowered.com/) every weekend from now on. They run tasty promotions on a regular basis. Odds are good you'll be able to get most everything you want at a substantial discount by mid-Feb or so.

As I recall they ran a number of promotions for L4D a month or two after release where they offered it for 50% off. With any luck they will do the same for the sequel. :2thumbsup:
Yup, I picked up L4D super-cheap via a Steam special. Ten or twelve bucks, can't remember.
Meanwhile, just found confirmation (http://steamcommunity.com/games/L4D2/events/55327883716288366) that the pre-purchase demo unlocks today at 3 p.m. Must be West Coast time, correct? So 6 p.m. tonight in the Middle West.

I just played a round of the Demo. It gives you the first two levels of the "Parish" campaign. Overall, I was pretty pleased with the experience. L4D vets can jump right into it, but at the same time there's things new enough to keep you interested. Impressions below, with some spoilers:
First off, new enemies. Some zombies, formerly police, have on riot gear and you have to turn around and hit them in the back to kill them. That's not too much trouble. But the Charger (who comes out of nowhere and bowls enemies over) is a bit of trouble, as it the Spitter, who releases a pool of acid on death that can do a lot of damage. The Jockey seems to be a Hunter clone where the only difference is that it rides you instead of pins you. Our old friends the Hunter, Boomer, Smoker, and Witch make appearances too. I didn't encounter a Tank.
There was one crescendo event, which we survived by the skin of our teeth. Maybe this was because I hadn't played it before, but as advertised, it seemed to be tougher than the previous crescendos in L4D1. Basically, you had to run through a security outpost to get to a bus station and the alarm in the tower goes off as soon as you enter. So you have to go through a small maze, climb the tower, and shut the alarm off just to stop the zombies from coming, and even then they don't freaking let up for a while. I ran out of auto-shotgun ammo about halfway through and had to switch to a hunting rifle to finish the rest of them off. By the end of it, we were all hurting and out of health. One of our party even died, but there was a conveniently-placed "Defribillator" item to revive them from death.
One gripe though - the much-advertised melee weapons are used in place of the much more useful pistols, so despite the options offered, I stuck with my guns (literally). Couldn't really get an idea that they'd be useful at all from the demo, especially considering you can still right-click to beat up enemies.
All in all I think the demo did its job. Looking forward to the release.

If that atrocity which is the intro in the demo is, in fact, the intro of the game then I think it is poorly done and they could have done better. Poor editing, poor shots, poor use of sound track. But then again, it may just be the demo.
However, the music is great, especially the banjo and blue grass versions of the original LFD theme. So far the demo is immersing me, but the music is really a nice touch. Makes me want to squeel like a pig. I hope there's a Ned Beatty zombie
Oh, and there's finally melee weapon friendly fire wOOOOOOOOOOOOt no more corner stacking melee spamming gayboes!
A Very Super Market
10-29-2009, 16:24
Nope. Only the specialty melee weapons do FF damage. Shoving someone just disrupts their vision.
I didn't think the intro was all that bad. Contrast it with the trailers to real zombie movies.
Finally had a chance to play the demo. More of the same, but in a good way.
Supposedly someone has already figured out how to bypass the Aussie censorship. :2thumbsup:

Most likely because of the horrible, horrible gameplay in the classified version.

No dead bodies, no blood.
I prefer the old Witch music, old hunter/smoker ambient sounds.
But VS mode is awesome. Charger, spitter, jockey. Great. :beam:

I've played it a bit today. Seems like the third level in each stage is the killer. It's been TKOing me (and groups) all the time.
MRD hopped in The Parish with me earlier today, we were about halfway through and my god were we having a rough go of it. We had some guy on our team who loved to shoot cars and kept shotgunning them while trying to snipe smokers, it got to the point where it was just hilarious. "You are terrible at this!" :laugh4:
We had to restart the finale (the bridge run) 3 times before we finally completed it. MRD and the car-sniper got rescued while me and another guy were tank bait. The Parish has to be the hardest campaign of them all, no question. The finale isn't so bad if you can stick together - its the crescendos leading up to the finale that are the real challenge. We played on Advanced.. I can't even imagine Expert. :skull:
When it was all over I had killed 1152 infected on my own, the grand-total for the team was something like 3.5k. :laugh4: Good times.

11-23-2009, 03:33
I was playing VS in the Parish with MRD, he joined rather late, we had a nice pub team.
The finale, I just ran by myself, made it right at the end, then the second tank hit me off. I beat everything before that. Two made it to the copter. Was great fun.
I then typed "pro" into chat, and one of our teammates made a snide remark.
Bleh.
We then smashed MRD's team. :grin2:
On the note of campaigns, I did most of Hard Rain.
Wow.
Easily the best campaign in L4D I've done. The atmosphere, heavier rain...you make it, now go back in thunderstorms, things are being flooded. Its crazy!

Yeah I shoulda known better than to join a game in progress that was 2 people short...there's usually a reason. The one guy who ran out a window, down the stairs and up the street while we were all fighting a horde and trapped by a spitter...then he berates us for not helping him LOL. After that the whole team was in-fighting.
I think on the bridge the best thing to do is run by the tank. Someone will usually get killed, but bunching up on the narrow passes and around the edges to try to fight is asking for trouble.
Hard Rain is a pretty good level, the storm covers the sound on special infected and the visibility is low. I don't like that you have to backtrack and basically do the same map twice, but all the sitches in the corn mill is a nice touch. I guess we know their favorite food now.
I think on the bridge the best thing to do is run by the tank. Someone will usually get killed, but bunching up on the narrow passes and around the edges to try to fight is asking for trouble.
I think the trick is tanks cannot flip vans or big moving trucks over, so if you can do a littlE "ring around the rosie" with the tank, you can bunch up and slip by him without risking a car roll onto some unlucky slob (like what happened to me on the last run). after that, 4 guns blazing can make it to the chopper pretty easily.
I agree with you on hard rain. amazing fun and the weather is certainly a game-changer. its kinda annoying how it silences voice-chat(its so loud it drowns it out!) but it also adds to the tension. so far, it and Swamp Fever are my two favorites.
I haven't even played this game yet, much to my shame. What little free time I've had has been consumed by the RPG du jour. My little boy lemur, on the other hand, has logged massive hours on it, and tells me it's great. (Yes, I abandon my PC for the laptop when little lemur wants to kill zombies.)
I made a promise to him that I would try the game this weekend, so if you see lemur playing L4D2 on Saturday or Sunday, there's a very real possibility that it's me, rather than my spawn.

melee weapons add a whole new level to the game. The chainsaw, while sounding awesome, has limited uses unless you plan on being a zombie target. I hate campaign 1 level 1 as u can either pick a pistol or melee.....no level 1 weapons

Hope to see you online (and more sober) soon!
Incidentally, we unlocked a couple of the mustachio acheivements last night, any tips on getting the gnome out?

To get te gnome out you have to score high on the little shooter game. Then the party has to carry it into aevery safe room and to the chopper. You should get the badge in the finale even if u die, as long as someone gets it to the chopper. I recommend dropping it by the stage in the center so you can and run to either side the chopper lands on
Note, it acts as a sole melee weapon. You can keep a gun on you, but if u equip the gun u drop the gnome, so the guy who carries it is pretty much a melee monkey
pevergreen
12-06-2009, 03:00
Yeah...and you don't have to be there the entire time. As long as you are in the finale when the gnome is taken out, you get the achievement.
I love that little fella, the wack a mole and strength minigames were good fun too. Second best campaign after hard rain imo.

It was good to see you ingame pever, I can't quite remember if you left after the first failed attempt over the bridge, but we made it on the second -er, after you and another guy left. :beam: :embarassed: We made more of a run for it than the zombie death crawler approach we'd followed before.
I'm still very new to L4D2 and I've spent most of my time playing the Parish (as the first 2 levels were in the Demo). But that last level really is tricky, it seems mostly down to an attrition factor. You have to strike a (fine) balance between advancing methodicaly and keeping some forward momentum. Were there a health drop half way it would be a lot easier, too easy probably!

Actually, unless I'm playing Versus, I find the Parish finale easy. Too easy, in fact. As long as I don't get pounced by a Hunter, Jockey, or Smoker in the first thirty seconds, I can zergrush my way to the helicopter in under three minutes (required for one achievement) solo. And by solo, I mean I kill every other survivor and then run alone. The trick is to completely avoid the Tanks. Don't even stop to shoot at them, just run past them. The level is laid out so that they aren't even going to catch up by the time you get to da choppah.

Probably singleplayer. It's surprisingly effective if you're a sure-shot. It's all about avoiding the one unlucky pounce.

I've yet to complete it on Versus. The tank dodge method is effective in Campaign mode, but in Versus a good tank can deal with that too easily.
Not only that, but Chargers can one-hit kill you by charging you over the side, unlike smokers or jockies who simply incap you, Chargers full on kill you since they carry you into the water below. If the team you're facing is good by consistently setting up their charges you will never make it to the 50% mark. :shame: I've gotten to within spitting distance of the chopper once only to get downed by common infected.

How so? Is that adrenaline + melee mayhem or adrenaline + automatic shotgun (to the face)?
I had an unpleasant christmas shopping experience at the weekend, where the mall was completely packed. I'm afraid I did mention to my girlfriend that things would be much easier if one were to go shopping with a semi-auto shotgun as per Dead-center.
Perhaps it's just as well the Uk has strict gun controls...:sweatdrop:

Tank can be a team-killer if you use him right......:book:
In "Dark Carnival 4# barns"(?) the part where the survivors need to go though the barn.
My buddy spawned as a Tank and hit one of them going into there....he had red heath, so he was knocked down....I managed to grab another one as a Smoker.
The last two Unloaded on the Tank and both had green health....they were keeping out of range and pouring on the damage.
I thought..."OK...Tanks done for now..." but he managed to throw or toss some sort of garbage bin at them and instant K.O. for both of them.
I now look at the Tank as a "Underestimate him and you die" policy.
We were the only Infected on our side....When they used him(A three man team)....we just tossed a Molotov and unloaded....keeping clear of any garbage bins...:laugh4:

Made it to the gun store, got inside, and a lovely tank was there.
