I'm a fair way into a Qarthadast campaign, having taken all of the west african regions, all of spain and sicily. Its about 245BC.

I took a look at the Qarthadast victory conditions by clicking the icon towards the bottom left of the screen (the same button you use to view family tree, etc). The map that appears after clicking the icon usually shows the victory conditions for a faction by shading in one colour the regions that need to be owned, and in a lighter colour the regions that need to be at least captured (if not owned).

In my case, the map showed that in addition to the regions I already owned, I needed to capture (not own) all of Italy and also the region Phoinike on the east mediterranean coast. I decided that before attacking Italy I would prepare a decent fleet and army to send east to capture and sack Sidon (in Phoinike).

When the fleet was 3/4 of the way there (somewhere near Rhodos) I took a look at the victory conditions contained in my faction leader's traits list. Unfortunately for me, the victory conditions in his traits were quite different from the ones shown on the map. Importantly, I needed to own (not just capture) Sidon, and had to own (not capture) Italy, and also had to own the cities in 'southern gaul' (for want of a better description) (massalia, segesta, bononia, etc).

I assume the victory conditions in the faction leader's traits is the correct version? Its a shame because I now have to pull back my army and scuttle my fleet (a waste of money).

Yes, the victory conditions show under the faction leader's traits (and likewise, the ones that you can observe with white squares around settlements when you click on the question mark in the Faction screen) are the most up-to-date. I understand that they are taken directly from the script.
