Hmmm, the list is of SM certainly impressive, but I could name several Backroomers that I thought were going to be named. Such as Tribesman, who requires no explanation of his merits. Sure, he may be tad polemical at times, but that is a good thing IMHO - that is Backroom. From what the list of the new SM says, I see no "controversial" members, or at least none IMO.

So what are the requirements, or to put it better, the guidelines for selecting a Senior Member?

LittleGrizzly
10-06-2009, 22:59
Im fairly sure Tribesman turned down being a senior member... not completely sure though...

The requirments used to had done something sizeable for either the .org or totalwar war, Modders, froggy for her guides ect.

These days I think its more of a been around a decent amount of time, fairly friendly (not nessecarily goody two shoes as far as I know but just generally decently behaved) and make a decent amount of posts I guess (not spamming)

I've been here a while so I think they figured in the end they had to give me it sooner or later...

To become a Senior Member you must be a solid member of the community, an example of which we can hold up and say "This is what we expect from you while you stay here at the .org." There have been exceptions to this, as slightly controversial members have also been given the SM status, but they are the exception not the rule. Large contributions to the community speak for themselves as does behavior.

Amount of time spent on the boards and number of posts made has nothing to do with considerations taken. In truth we don't "have" to give anyone Senior Member, instead it is given as a tip of the hat and a heart-felt 'thank you' to those who we feel have had a positive impact on this slice of the internet.

LittleGrizzly
10-07-2009, 00:06
Well I was more thinking in terms of 3 nicely put well thought out posts a day rather than 1 nicely put well thought out post a day probably would get you there quicker as your interacting with the community more... I wasn't so much thinking purely based on post count.... obviously a post in the 3 word story is not the same as a long informative post elsewhere... and same with the time.... obviously the longer your here the more contribution you can make... the more likely you are to get the promotion.. but obviously 10 years spent generally spamming and being a pain without contribution won't get you anywhere....

Hmmm, this brings up another question - why in the bleeping heck is Foot not an SM? His contribution to EB is titanic. He is the current EB mod leader. He has almost 10,000 posts, nearly ever single one of them purposeful (at least on the public fora) - no small talk. His contribution to TW and .Org is more significant than at least five SM on the current list. Yet Foot is not a senior member...

Anyone know why?

LittleGrizzly
10-07-2009, 02:48
Im guessing he may have some kind of other title ?

For example Moderators and InsaneApache has Clan as his title... or is he simply a member ?

pevergreen
10-07-2009, 06:45
Clan is a shot back to the old days, where clan leaders had their own usergroup. Its an exclusive title.

Moderators, when stepping down, gain automatic Senior Member status, as thanks, and because they are. Assistant Moderators, do not.

It is true, with any honourific, it becomes less meaningful as time goes on. There are ways around it, to keep it a select honour, but as of now, its only around 10 people per 6 months that get it, but its when these people are the most active, you feel as though it means nothing. :grin2:

However, it is up to Tosa/whoever else has a say/etc to decide how it is handed out.

Who's this Foot guy? Never heard of him. Hes made a contribution to his part of the subforum. A mod, not the .org.

That is a group of people I regulary read posts from that make me glad to be part of this forum. I would gladly give up my SM status to one of the first four, but thats mainly because I respect them, or love them (Shh, our love is secret Beefy) while the others are good solid members of the community, but I don't interact with them a whole lot.

Well EB has rooted in the org almost from its early beginnings. If you see the "viewings" of org sub-forums you 'll notice that the EB part has one of the highest (if not the highest) viewings number at any time. It is well known that many people that joined the org for EB and EB only eventually discovered the rest of the forum. I'd say that it is an honour for the org that such a popular TW mod calls the org its home.

In addition most of the members, have one or more "operation" subforums. TinCow is to be found in PBEMs, Caravel in the Main Hall and the Sword Dojo etc. very few members participate in equal amounts of interactions with too many sub-forums. It would be unthinkable to say that "the Parliament is just a sub-forum for a game, not the org" and similarly it is imho wrong saying that EB is "a mod not the .org".

Anything housed within the org is imo the org.

It's not about "tradition" as such. Mod leaders don't automatically get Senior Membership AFAIK. In the case of Foot he has earned Senior Membership through his contributions here. It does not necessarily matter if he is only active in a particular forum/project or not. Mods that are hosted here are valid contributions to the .org and those leading or working on these projects are as deserving of recognition as any other .org patron.

Right you are. There are numerous people who do not get out of Gameroom much. That does nto diminish their contribution a bit, as it merely channels it into a different culprit.

IMO, he and the other modders are the only ones who are actually doing a job, working here, as opposed to the people enjoying themselves in the Frontroom, Backroom and Gamerooom. EB is not just a "mod", in the sort of dismissive manner you referred to it :P. Gollum is correct. Countless people come to .Org for EB. Some stay, such as me for instance. Everytime I see "Our Newest Member" there is usually a 2/3 chance he is viewing the EB forums. Without EB, this place would be far quieter.

I'm not saying that modders don't work hard and I really appreciate their efforts and hard work, but you are very mistaken if you think that hosting a mafia game is not hard work and does not require a lot of preparation, dedication and time. Hosting is rewarding, but it's very time consuming.

This discussion cannot stay neutral, due to the vast majority of participants liking EB, and me disliking it, because I've always been a R:TR fanboy.

As for someones post a bit beforehand, referencing how some mods stay within their areas. Caravel comes out, as does TinCow. Why, right now, hes accusing me of being a lying scumbag (which is fine, makes sense in game, since we are pirates) and even worse, calling me Pevergreen.

A more likely reason is that, until recently, the EB forum was something of a private era. The EB team ran things there, not the .Org moderators. Hence the contributions of EB members were less likely to be noticed by the forum staff.

As others have said, the title of Senior Member is given out to people that the moderators believe (1) behave in a mature and responsible manner and (2) contribute significantly to the Org community. Contributions can take many forms, from creative writing to hosting various forum games to providing consistently useful and informative posts, in whatever forums the person frequents. As a result, Senior Members are people that both meet the behavior standards that the Org values so highly, and help build the community.

Yes, there are many people who fall through the cracks. We only give out about 10 Senior Memberships every 6 to 12 months, and there are thousands of active members here. Awarding this title more frequently would dilute the significance of it. At TWC, there are so many ridiculous titles that they're generally not a good indicator of how well someone has contributed to the forum. Here at the Org, you can guarantee that every single person wearing the Senior Member title is an example of what the Org stands for. When you speak to those people in public or in private, you will always find them polite and helpful. It is not a coincidence that pretty much every Moderator was a Senior Member first.

Hello,

A few Senior Member accounts are handed out each year, however many more deserve it.

It's contradicting and conflicting and thus hard to explain how I look at it, but I will try.

Whether you are a new member, a member, a senior member or part of the staff, it doesn't matter much. We're all people having fun at this place in some way or the other. It doesn't matter how old or young you are, which game you play or which forum you visit.

It's not always easy to smile or to be friendly. It's however very easy to stop smiling, maybe some are so fed up about smiling in the world outside that they need a safe cyberplace to vent. There are plenty of places on the internet for that, this site is not such a place.

It's too easy to sign up an account at a forum and play bad boy, also here. So, we created the new member account. Not just so our older members could easily spot new members and provide extra help to them, but also to make it just a bit harder for the creation of bad boy accounts (it's not much). New members are not guilty until proven innocent.

Smiling can be difficult, fighting is easy. I use only two words here, but it's of course the whole spectrum of social interactions. Smiling can be difficult, and everyone can have a bad hairday, also here. But it shouldn't escalate. Of course there are moderators, but it won't work well when 50% of the members or more are in constant fight with each other. So, Senior Membership is not only a way to thank members for their contributions, but also a motivation for other members to smile.

For a motivation to work it has to be somewhat rare to be desired and wanted. Yet, not so rare that people give up effort to obtain it because they feel they'll never get there.

But again, I'm not happy with class differences as we are pretty much the same (to put it simply). I am not happy with it, because it creates more work to perform administration to keep this site running and working for the different activities. Yet, it's of course also something that needs to be done (I think) and it's a way to nod and smile to all members, not just the ones who already achieved senior, for being nice and having fun together.

Thank you all very much.

Out of pure curiousity, are posters scarred for life?

Let's say one of the fabulous people who got their well-deserved promotions today, in the bad ole days, let's say, was a bit of a rebel and rubbed people the wrong way. After presumingly changed into a good poster as they are now and done all their contributions, would their past sins be forgotten?

But again, I'm not happy with class differences as we are pretty much the same (to put it simply)

Learnt something new today, our Leader-in-chief is a Socialist.

I am hoping so. In the past I was a bit of an arrogant (expletive).

Still am sometimes, but I'm really, really trying to work on it. Because I don't want to be one.

Unless you're a spambot or have managed to get yourself perma banned: no.

Meh, I got a few warnings in the past for spamming before I got promoted to senior member.

Then I spammed again and I was given the ultimate punishment: the moderator rags :laugh4:

So yes, Beskar, anyone can become a Senior Member, regardless of behaviour in the past.

Just keep your posts civil and mature, contribute significantly to the community (examples: keep making good and informative posts for a long while or try to help control a thread that is going the wrong way e.g. by making a funny post or meet and greet new members, be helpful to them, show them around or host a lot of mafia games or help answering questions from members in the TW related sections of the board or write an impressive AAR or impressive stories in the Mead Hall or contribute significantly in the modding sections or help out in the tech issues section or help finding bugs in TW games, etc etc...) and sooner or later, the SM title (and the free pr0n and the bad viagra jokes!) will be yours.

Can being constantly hosting new fun different games in the gameroom make me a senior member?? :beam:

Hey... are you trying to imply something? I am a good boy and never received any infractions. :clown:

Grizzly was a little bit of a rebel back in the day... a little too emotional and with a bit of an anti authoritarian streak in me....

But i still made it in the end... I think it just added an extra 3-4 years waiting time for the honour ~;)

Though my one and only warning did comes as an SM... it was for something silly though don't think it even came with a point...

Ohh and grats incase i didn't say it earlier...
