A team of people adapted the Space Hulk boardgame to the PC in top-down 2d turn-based strategy game style. They didn't get the rights from Games Workshop and had to change the name and tweak the content. Now it's being released as Alien Assault. (http://www.teardown.se/) It's very obviously Space Hulk though, so maybe get it before the lawyers see it.

I never actually played Space Hulk before but I've read up on it. Set in the Warhammer 40k universe, you lead a bunch of Space Marine Terminators onto derelict space debris (the eponymous "hulks") to accomplish missions. You fight Genestealers, which are basically the aliens from the Alien series. Your marines are bulky, slow, and as bad at melee as they are average at ranged combat. The 'stealers can't attack you from range but usually win in hand-to-hand and can pop up behind your marines through air vents and tunnels.

There's a lot of good stuff there, and the tutorial campaign in Alien Assault introduces you to the basics and then halfway through starts to murder you. It's really challenging but I highly recommend it.

Caution:the mission briefings contain strong (though sometimes amusing) language. Also you're exterminating genetic horrors with various weapons but it's in rather smallish sprites.
