you can recruit them after the March of time event(vanilla Marian reforms) thus when the romans hold a huge city in central italy.

You wait until the Romans have built a huge city in Italy (most likely Capua, Arretium, or Ariminum - Rome doesn't count). It's called March of Time reforms. Usually occurs around 240-230 BC. You'll get some nice ships, too.

edit: cross-posted...

Thanks for the help. I didn't realise it was a March of time thing.

And to speed it up before you squash Romans yourself, you can use the process_cq cheat on cities like Capua or Arretium. Ariminum is too small...

Alternatively, I have even hear that the Huge City can even be of Hellenic culture, so you can capture Capua, make it Huge (it is the fastest growing nd most populous city in Italia), and give it back to the Romani.

Can you give me a quote for that? I do not think that this will work, because it is chained to the hidden resource "Italia".

I heard that someone got it that way. It probably is tied to someting like: Romans own a huge city with the hidden res "italia". so not "There is a roman huge city with the hr italia"

btw what ships?!?!!?

There was an earlier thread about it where a couple of individuals claimed it worked for them. All you need is a Huge City in the "italia" provinces under Roman control, regardless of the culture that built the Huge City.

Good question - what ships?

Liburnes and covered liburnes.

A trireme class ship (actually a birreme), but with better stats.

I read somewhere in the forums that a good idea was to use force diplomacy to take a Roman city, upgrade it to a huge city, and sell it back to the Romans.

I was - Trieremiolai. Even better than Covered Liburnes.

To be quite honest, by the time you get them - you'll already be winning. Just merc the Pezheteroi from Mercs R Us(Just South of Sparta FYI) and the rest of Greece.

strange in my last(fairly advanced) KH campaign I occupied Italy far before MOT :/ and I could build Trieremiolai in eastern Ports but not in greece.

I agree about the Phalangitai I'd rather take italy early on and rely on hoplites and merc pezhetairoi than to let that tumor grow any larger :D

AFAIK the trieremolai has nothing to do with MOT, but needs the necessary upgrade of naval ports in for example Rhodos. Another question is: Why can't the KH get those monster ships the Ptolemaioi start pumping out after a while?

In my current campaign the Romans started of promising, before a sudden baklash in the hands of the Aedui og Lusotannan brought them to mediocrasy. In 217 BC they still haven't managed to grow a huge city and give me my precious phalangitai:no:

You mean the Nees Megistai? I thougth the ones that make those were: Ptollies, Seleucids, Maks and Epirots.

The nees megistai yes, they are quite intimidating swarming around Rhodos and every other turn they dump a couple of stacks of freed slaves.

I'm just wondering why the KH shouldn't be able to build these, could I possibly pick up the skill if an FM captures say Alexandria and they are able to build it there?

You're just not megalomaniac enough.

Edit: ownership romans_brutii, numidia, macedon, romans_julii, thrace, greek_cities

You should be able to get them. Probably need to capture a successor capital. Did you try Pella or Ambrakia?

No, they are not subject to a reform. I guess the huge poliremes were not included for the KH because they are an expression of Imperial hubris as well as weapon. Not to mention that they are frightfully difficult to maintain, so you really need to have the resources of an empire to be able to afford them. The KH is not a empire, but a confederation of city states.

Oh, they do have access to them? I guess he doesn't have a military port of sufficient high level. You can't build those in many provinces, even if they do have capability for a military port.

Ambrakia, Pella, Rhodos, Antiocheia, Alexandreia, Charax, Capua and Atiqa, that are large ports I can think of right now. But I think team_kramnik is telling him how to mod them available to our thread starter's Arche Hellenikoi.~D

I thought maybe ships are bound to provinces like landunits. Rhodian ship in Rhodes etc.. But that does not normally seem to be the case.
On checking EDB:
recruit "generic ship navas" 0 requires factions { macedon, romans_julii, thrace, numidia, }

No Koinon doesn't get them. Well makes sense as they're the embodiment of the "my ship is bigger than yours" attidute of the successors. Fun thing is they're actually more cost-effective than quinquiremes.

Ambrakia and Rhodes are your best bets. You start with one and the other one ensures your victory in Hellas with its top level barracks.

Indirectly, they are bound to province. The ships you can recruit are determined by the level of military port, which is bound to provinces.
