Steampunk Mafia [Concluded]

I got the idea for this mafia from Riceballtail at mafiascum.net and added / modified it. She deserves a lot of credit for the format of this game.

Welcome to the Professor Vesuvius Von Yaropolk's Steampunk Airship! This year, we are celebrating with a tournament to see who can be the best inventor. However, an informant has stated that three competitors have cheated and tampered with the competition materials! It seems they were intending to defeat the competition by killing them.

Twelve competitors enter the grand workshop, three of them are cheaters, and it's your job to eliminate them!

Rules:

Rounds

Every round will last 24 hours except weekends. These will consist of one extended round and I will post the deadlines. Be active! If you do not post for 3 days, you will be Steampunk'd (http://wondermark.com/538/).


Out of thread communication.

Do not talk about the game with anyone outside this thread or unless your PM states that you can, and if so, only when it is permitted. Some items have special communication powers (more below)


Game Phases

At the start of the competition each inventor will get an inventor kit: each kit contains boxes of spare parts that can be used to create various contraptions (more on that later).

The game consist of two phases. During the day inventors will vote during the day using the standard vote: Yaropolk convention. Please don't forget the colon as I will search for vote posts using this string "vote:". Votes in edited posts won't count. In order to change your vote, you must unvote your first vote. E.G. unvote vote: Yaropolk The person with the most votes will get to test the Fanken-traption that your humble host has cobbled together that day. Things don't go well for the person testing the contraption. The device must be tested no matter what so with a tie host will decide who to use at random. No-lynch is not allowed.

At night, the inventors retire to their respective rooms to work on their inventions during the night. The inventor will pick a box from their invetion kit and work on assembling the spare parts in it into a useful item. You can use a box at night by sending me a PM. E.G. "I will use the contents of the blue box on Yaropolk." Some items will automatically be used on yourself and others require a target.

Odds are that there are devices in each box, unfortunately, you have not been given assembly instructions so you only have 50% chance of your device working. The cheaters have instructions for all their items, and their devices will work 100% of the time. Additionally the cheaters have stolen 2 spare parts from each non-cheater kit, so each kit has 2 items that are duds (will fail).



The kits:


Each kit will be randomly selected to contain the parts for some of the following items:

Toxicide Pistol: Night Kill
Steam-poweredToxin Extractor: Protect (useable only on others)
X-Ray Goggles: Investigation
Heterophonic Audio Alarm: Nobody can enter your room (bulletproof your own room)
Spring-Loaded Photo-camera: Spring outside someone's room to record visitors (watcher)
Rube Goldberg Doorknob: Set up on someone's door - it will take them all night to exit (roleblock)
Robotic Acid Micro-Sprayer: Destroy one item at random from selected target (excludes tonight's item).
Cyclomagneitc Force Field Generator: Jailkeeper
Transistor Radio: Can send PM's at night through host. All other people with Transistor Radios will be able to hear you. (not affected by Alarm/ Doorknob/Jailkeeper)
Telemorphic Transporter: Switch rooms with another person (not affected by Alarm/Doorknob)
Wheel Powered Defibrilator: Revive


All night actions will be resolved in the following order:
Bulletproof room
Switch rooms
Roleblock
Jailkeeper
Protect
Kill
Revive
Investigation
Watcher
Destroy Item
Transistor Radio

Within the same action, PM order gets priority.

There are 12 inventor kits:

Black - Atheotes
Red - Sassaki
Blue - Khazaar
Green - CDF
Yellow - Double A
Purple - Beskar
Brown - Centurion1
Orange - Slashandburn
Gray - Captain Blackadder
White - Pevergreen
Silver - AVSM
Gold - Tratorix

Each kit contains 7 color coded boxes which contain spare parts for one randomly selected item. 3 kits have been randomly selected to be "Cheater kits" which don't have any duds and contain instructions for all items. The other 9 kits have 2 duds, and 50% sucess rate on the remaining 5 items.




ROLES

Honest inventor: During the day votes for a test subject for one of Prof Von Yaropolk's franken-ventions. During the night uses one the items from his selected invention kit according to the rules above.

Cheater: During the day votes for a test subject for one of Prof Von Yaropolk's franken-ventions. During the night uses one of the items from his selected invention kit according to the rules above and other notes specified in the PM.

Cheaters do not know each other's identities, but they all have a transistor radio to enable communication (by sending a pm to the host with "Transistor Message" in the subject). This message will be forwarded to all other people who have a transistor radio - this includes all cheaters and any inventor using the transistor radio item that night.

Cheaters will be discovered upon lynch.




TOWN WIN CONDITION: You win when the cheaters have been dealt with, and at least one town player remains alive.

SCUM WIN CONDITION: You win when there are no town remaining, or nothing can prevent this from happening.


When you sign up, pick a kit color. You cannot pick a kit color that someone before you already picked.

Ze competition is starting, ja? I am sending out the PM's now. Game starts with a night phase. Round will be over at 22:30 EST on Friday (~24 hours from now). For those of you making use of the night communication ability, I will check my inbox once every two hours all day tomorrow.

Clarification - you don't have to pick which items to use from a box. Each box contains all the items necessary for exactly one item (Unless its been sabotaged). Just PM me "Use green box on Yaropolk" for example. Try to guess what the item is from the list of possibilities before you make it. Parts from different boxes cannot be combined.

For radio broadcasts, I will send out exactly what you send me without revealing the broadcaster's identity. If you want to mention your name in the broadcast, go ahead. If you want to lie, go ahead as well. If you want to remain anonymous that is also an option.

Professor Von Yaropolk gathers the contestants in the morning and announces that everyone survived! My cameras didnt capture any attempted murder scenes. Oh well, lets get on with the business of the day.

Prof Von Yaropolk points everyone to a large covered device standing in the middle of hall. He unveils a very large contraption with a massive arm. BEHOLD: the lemon juicer of the future! Everyone gasps! How does it work you ask? Very simple, you simply place a large object, oh say 75 kilos or so, on the arm and a lemon on the little platform on the opposite side. Draw back the arm and release it, the large object will be catapulted off my ship and the force of the arm will juice the lemon, dripping it into the collection glass underneath.

Why the catapult you ask? Because I can! Lets vote for who gets to test the catapult! You have just over 24 hours until 1:00 pm EST on Sunday.

In the Red box you find a Brass Plate, some Tripwire, a Wooden Box, and some Black Cloth.

This is the camera, my attempt to make it failed though. In one of my other boxes I have the same minus the tripwire so I assume that was sabotaged.

Edit: Also, just to stop doing a 3rd post. If you get a success/etc, post what the was in the box. The Mafia have the advantage as they have schematics, so they know what they can build, however, we don't, so saying what builds what gives the town an advantage, since the mafia already know.

There is a big magnet attached to the ceiling and a small kitten playing on the carpet, powering this contraption using static electricity. Second, blackadder, i am simply wondering why no suspicion is being placed on people of the SOI list? after one night phase inwhich no ones actions can be really confirmed we are placing suspicion. Are there are any REAL suspects that anyone may have reached because of any night actions they took last turn or was everyone's inventions duds except for mine?

Professor Von Yaropolk gathers all the competitors in the morning and you notice that you are one short, and there is a stiff body in a very awkward position lying on a gourney covered up with a white sheet. Professor Von Yaropolk pulls off the sheet and reveals.....Beskar! His face is frozen in a grimace.

Follow me to the video cameras, says the professor. The film is grainy and there is no sound, but the professor has helpfully inserted silent-movie style captions!

A figure sneaks up to Beskar’s room and knocks on the door. "KNOCK KNOCK" says the caption. Then the figure quickly hides around the corner. Beskar comes out to investigate. "WHO IS THERE?" says the caption. He looks one way; when he turns around to look the other way, a pistol stretches out from behind the corner and shoots. "SPROING!" The dart hits Beskar in the leg. He takes off running in the opposite direction screaming . "HEEEEEEELP!" As he rounds the corner a second figure steps out of the shadows in front of him and plants a second dart square between his eyes. "HASTA LA VISTA" says the caption as the man steps back into the shadows. Beskar's body falls with a "THUD" .

"Well that was entertaining", says Von Yaropolk. Beskar is hereby disqualified from the competition on account of rigor mortis! So, lets get on with the voting. Today we have a new contraption. You've all seen the potato that powers a lightbulb. Today we're going to power a GIANT lightbult using a GIANT potato. Lacking a giant potato we're going to use one of you as a battery. You just stand on this platform here, hold the Zinc anode in one hand, the Copper cathode in the other, and we'll see what happens. Now VOTE I say!

Each box contains the spare parts needed to construct one item. The description of the items are in the main thread. 2 boxes are sabotaged and are guaranteed to fail. The remaining will work 50% of the time. You can guess what the item is by looking at the parts in the box and thinking about what they would build out of the list of items. You can use the contents of one box each night. For example you could say: "Tonight i build the item in the purple box and use it on Yaropolk". Be careful what you build as the resutls may be unexpected if you get an unanticipated item.

You affix one end of the string to Tratorix’s doorknob and the other end to the hook. When the handle turns, the string will pass over the candle which will burn through the string and release the hook onto the wheel…which will cause the mouse to eat the watermellon? Man this stuff is hard without instructions. Construction failed due to 50% fail chance.

Professor Von Yaropolk isn't happy with the lack of votes. We can't have an inventors tournament without everyone voting to kill each other off! Sounds like a good time for a 2-for-1 special. Lynch one active player wog one lurker free!

The professor escorts both contestants to the platform. Centurion you hold the cathode, Tratorix you hold the anode. Ions from your body (positive from Centurion and negative from Tratorix) will flow down the wire to power the lightbulb. Both players do as instructed, and lo-and-behold the lamp lights up. Both players seem to be fine as well. A good 10 minutes go by without any violent deaths. This is no good at all. The players take a bow and walk off the platform unscathed. Suddenly both fall over, they've died from lack of electrolytes in their bodies. How anticlimactic.

Now says Von Yaropolk, go back to your rooms and do me proud!

Night 3 ends at 5 pm EST on Wednesday.

Professor Von Yaropolk gathers all the inventors once again in the morning. Again you find yourself one short. Double A is not with you. Von Yaropolk rolls out the film projector and you observe the night's results with silent movie captions as always.

A man runs up to Double A’s door and kicks it wide open “WHERE ARE YOU” the captions say. Double A jumps behind his bed as the man fires a poison dart from his pistol. The camera rotates 360 degrees around the dart as its flying through the air. "WHOOSH" How did Von Yaropolk do that?! The dart barely misses Double A's head but bounces off the work table behind him and ricochets right in his bum. "SPROINNNNNG" Double A collapses to the floor.

Now, ahem, coughs Yaropolk, time to get down to business. You may have heard of a recent invetion of a "Petrol" (Yaropolk makes air quotes with his fingers) powered auto carriage. Prepostorous I say! Even if this crazy contraption of theirs works, where will they find smooth roads to drive?! I'm working on a steam powered walker. Yaropolk points to a set of two aluminum stilts connected to a steam engine backpack. Just put these on and you can walk anywhere! Tonight's lucky winner will get to test it out. I call it The Von Yarowalker! I think it will be all the rage with the kids in a decade's time!


OOC: Someone pointed out to me that one of the descriptions on the first post did not match the part description I sent out. The "Steam Powered Defibrilator" has been renamed the "Wheel Powered Defibrilator"

Von Yaropolk invites A Very Super Market up to the Von Yarowalker. AVSM eagerly jumps into the stilts and throws the steam pack up on his shoulders. Von Yaropolk hands him a small gauge. "Turn the knob clockwise to release more steam and go faster, but remember not to go past..." Too late, AVSM grabbed the gauge and was already off. Miraculously the contraption actually worked. With a puff of steam and a "Chuga-Chuga" sound, the walker took off. AVSM walked a lap around the airship, and then cranked up the knob. The walker started running. It moved much faster than a human, maybe as fast as 3 leagues per hour. Not satisfied, AVSM cranked the knob even more. The walker was not moving with blinding speed, on the next lap everyone felt a "WHOOOSH" from the wind. The walker moved faster and faster until suddenly the stilts went flying in different directions. AVSM's leg muscles could not take the stress of such rapid motion and he was torn in half.

"Excellent experiment" exclaimed Von Yaropolk and scribbled something into his noteboook "Next time the gauge only go to 6 leagues per hour. I shall call this Von Yaropolk's constant of human muscle capacity."

Now then, off to your rooms and make me proud. The round will end in 24 hours, 10/9 23:59:00.

Captain Blackadder and Khazaar both step forward. Two volunteers? Great. I have two perfectly safe inventions that will in no way interact to result in a horrible death for both of you!

Khazaar, I want you to put on this rocket pack. It's been in development for over 2 weeks, so that's A-OK safe in my book! Khazaar put ons the rocket pack and amazingly enough it takes off safely. He swiftly buzzes around the airship.

Captain Blackadder, I want you to try out my new magnetic harpoon system. It's the latest and greatest hunting tool. You lock it onto your prey, and squeeze the trigger. The electric field generated by the target's body attracts the harpoon, even if it tries to evade, and then you just reel it in. Nothing could be easier.

CB takes aim at a passing eagle, but as he squeezes the trigger, Khazaar buzzes in front of him. The harpoon hits Khazaar and takes him out of the sky. CB doesn't have time to react, and is dragged overboard with him. All that remains of CB is a transistor radio that fell out of his pocket.

It works it works! Wonderful! Very well gentlemen. This may be your last chance to root out the cheater, consider your actions carefully tonight and get to work.

Since this is the last night, I am putting everything in the writeup, no PMs are sent.


Slashandburn was hunkered down in his room. He set an alarm on the door, wore a tin bucket as a helmet and hid behind his bed. At the stroke of midnight, the alarm rang! Armed with a wrench Slashandburn ran to the door. He swung it open and CDF tripped and fell forward into the room. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?" yelled Slashandburn, towering over the fallen man. I'm here to protect you from attackers explained CDF. At the same time, the alarm went off again, this time Atheotes was standing in the doorway looking at the scene unfolding in front of him.

Slashandburn changed his attention to the newcomer. Raising his wrench in a threatening manner he approached Atheotes. "WHAT DO YOU WANT?" Atheotes pushed Slashandburn out of the way, "I'm here to protect you, look out behind you!", and raised a Toxicide pistol. He shot CDF who was just getting up off the floor.

"Phew that was close" Slashandburn sighed in relief, "Thank you Atheotes." The two men went out onto the public deck to find Von Yaropolk and inform him that the cheaters have been dealt with. As they passed a steam powered cannon, Slashandburn went over to inspect it. "Really a marvel of technology, ain't it?" he commented. Slashandburn tried to get a closer look at the side of the cannon when Atheotes pushed him over the edge.

At the same time Von Yaropolk strolled out for his midnight walk of the ship. "Ah Atheotes, good to see you. What are you doing up this late?" Atheotes replied "Professor, I am happy to report, all cheaters have been dealt with." "Don't try to fool an old man my boy", replied Von Yaropolk. You may be a cheater, but you did win this year's competition. You and your two friends, Captain Blackadder and Pevergreen all get a steampunk medal:

The game turned out to be very close. In several rounds I thought mafia was done for, but it came down to a single choice of who Atheotes would kill at the end. The mafia did not collaborate at all via radio, and this got in their way quite a bit. Here's the night by night breakdown:


Role selection:
The cheater boxes are left for last. Pever, Atheotes and CB pick the magic boxes. I made 1 box full of 7 guns (Pever got it). The other 2 cheaters do not have any guns in their boxes, but they do have some useful stuff like acid sprayer. This was done to prevent having more than 1 kill at a time. If pever died with the magic gun box, the contents would be split between Atheotes and Pever. If they used all 7 guns, they would no longer be able to kill.

Pevergreen gets blocked and investigated right out of the gate, not good for mafia. On the other hand the guns are now split between CB and Atheotes. Mafia did not talk at all. Pever is lynched Atheotes and CB get 4 and 3 guns respectively.

The two cheaters don't coordinate at all, its really time to start at least calling your kills out. Both target Beskar. That's a waste of a gun, you're down to 5 kills. CB dodges an acid attack. Also I steampunk'd tratorix.

Atheotes - no orders

CB sends in orders to kill CDF, then Atheotes radios that he will kill CDF. CB switches target to Double A, but Atheotes never follows through with a kill order. I messed up the description for the reviver (steam powered vs wheel powered) so Sasaki doesnt know what he's using. He sends in a revive on CB unintentionally. I compensate Sasaki by giving him a random box from the now dead Double A. He gets a jailkeeper.

CB is the tephlon don of the day. CB has a kill attempt, a roleblock and a revive targeted at him. The two attacks miss, and the revive works although is not needed. He's down to one shot though and will probably be lynched. If Atheotes is MIA tomorrow, mafia is screwed.

This was set to be a night of reservoir dogs. Everyone has a gun pointed to each other's head. Atheotes could've killed CDF, CDF kill CB, CB kill Sassaki, Sassaki block Khazaar and so on! CB uses his last gun and once again manages to dodge the bullet. Good news for town Khazaar blocks Atheotes and Sasaki's jailkeep on Khazaar fails.

D4 - I am very surprised that CB hasn't been strung up 5 ways till sunday by now. Slashandburn incorrectly votes for Khazaar, then for CB without unvoting. Looks like we have 2 lynch candidates. If I favor any one of them over the other then I pretty much hand victory over to the other side. I decide to lynch them both.

N5 - CDF protects Slash, and Slash alarms his own room. If Atheotes attacks slash, town wins. Otherwise mafia wins. The game came down to Atheotes' decision on the last night. He killed CDF.

I was hoping for that... because i knew CDF had already used his 2 roleblocks and one kill... he was more likely to go protect you that do anything to me... but i had no idea what you were going to do...you wouldnt kill anyone because that could end up bad... i thought u will protect urself or roleblock one of us...
