Hi,
I am soon to be commencing on a history assignment regarding the Roman Empire, its relations, and the Punic Wars.
What I would appriciate very much is, if you know any good intersites, books, or memorized knowledge then post it here.
Another thing is: how would you forumlate the questions (I will investigate the ... etc), and final have any some suggestions to the disposistion?
All replies and answers are very welcomed, and if you are interrested and want to debate the subject just contact me.
Thanks in advance
EDIT: pls read my 4th post..

Here's a variety of sites for Roman research.
(as most of them are being used for researching the mod: path to the dark ages, they focus on the Roman army)

Thank you all very much, you help are appriciated !
Tak fister http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
one or two good books on the subject...(if you have interest)
Lazenby - Hannibal's War
Peddie - Hannibal's War (if you are just interested in the military side of the second punic war)
and anything by H Scullard on the subject...
I don't know - what level are you doing this at?
of course if you get interested you can always wade through Livy - The War with Hannibal, and Polybus - The Rise of the Roman Empire, they are pretty cheap paperbacks if you look somewhere which has them http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Memorised facts...
Rome took in troops every year, and took them in for 25 years service, it only discharged on odd years - half the army served 26 years...(I think this was early imperial professional )
Every Legionary garrison had the capacity to house 10% of the theoretical garrison in military hospitals ( I think this was early imperial professional )
and others, much more useful, that I have forgotten or cannot explain here, anyway its your damn assignment http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

A very romanticized view of the Punic war can be found in a Penguin paperback translation of Flaubert's Salaambo, and excellent book.

Just to bump an old thread...
Does anyone have any theroies on who actually started the 2. punic war, and tell me your arguments as well.
And do you know if a treaty between Rome and Carthage from about 348-306 BC existed, that claimed that Rome cud not go to Sicilly and Carthage cud not go to Italy. And please give me the stuff that indeed proves such a treaty, or your theories why it would exist or not?
Thanks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Oi do your own reading boy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

That pretty much explain why and how.
That treaty...well not that much info on it apparently.

Goldsworthy mentions it too in "The Punic Wars"

Hmm.. but it says Saguntum was allied with Rome, which is true but the fact that the alliance is of later date than the treaty signed after the peace of 1. punic war (it states that they must not attack the eachothers allies). Polybius ackoledge this, and accepts this and says that this must be true with alliances after the treaty as well, and says a treaty with hasdrubal was signed in 223 BC with the contents saying that hostile armies of cartharge must not cross Ebro (a river).
But Livius writes that the treaty with Hasdrubal states that hostile armies of cartharge must not cross Ebro AND not attack Sagunt. He does not acknowledge that later alliances are true for the treaty after the peace of 1. punic war. Thus there is a question about if it was leagal to attack Saguntum or not.
Well I know this is detail, but it has to be. And btw. the carthargianians does not accept that treaty signed by Hasdrubal cos the senate of cartharge says he did not work under it...

I hope you've got acces to Livy's history of the period?
But looking at hte qustions yuo're asking here maybe not :o
Livy's history of the 2nd Punic War is a wonderful read, for all it's problems - I thoroughly recommend the Penguin Classics edition "Rome and Hannibal".

Historians accept Theodore Ayrault Dodge as THE authority on Hannibal; Look for "Hannibal" two volumes, you wont find it at a book store, liberary maybe gl.....
Legal or not I think you are overcomplicating things..ofc I dont know what your assignments focus will be.
Saguntum was allied with Rome, so an attack on it could cause problems with Rome, treaty or no treaty.
Rome did warn Hannibal before he attacked the city.
Hannibal didnt really have to attack and take Saguntum.
Any lengthy discussion about who was right and who was wrong and what was legal or not is IMO not very important.
If someone wants a war they will get it. It why they want it that is interesting.
