I think bigmilt16's thread gets more and more derailed by rulesets which obviously don't make much sense for the roman republik. So here's the version for first-among-equals/megalomaniacs.

My campaign as egypt in the 77BC mod, but should work just as well for EB:

- All field armies consist of mercenaries except 4 units of Basilikon Agema who follow the King everywhere. After every campaign the mercs involved get disbanded.

- No cavalry except FMs

- Don't recruit Egyptians. They're unreliable

- Faction heir is either the eldest son or eldest daughter

- When a general dies his army gets disbanded

- When the faction leader dies every city except Alexandria and the city the faction heir is in will revolt. All mercenaries are disbanded. The new faction leader has to link up with the Agema and come to egypt to restore order. All FMs go to Alexandria to acknowledge his rule. There is a 1/3 chance for FMs that they acted a bit overambitious during the succesion crisis. They will seek a quick death in battle to avoid being executed for treason.

- Everytime you capture a city you must rename it after your Faction Leader. I now know how the Americans got the name Philadephia. There are lots of cities in Coile-Syria with the same name.

- No enemy buildings get destroyed. We're not Romans. The AI doesn't do it either.

- pay Rome large sums of money to keep good relations

- If possible always have some Big Poliremes around if the King wants to travel by sea. I imported them from EB!

- Don't trade ancillaries. There is probably a good reason why this person joined this character.

- If a chracter has the actor ancillary he will stay in alexandria spending his time writing fancy plays. If the Faction Leader got it the Agema will stay too. They are needed as backgrounds.

Interesting rules, even though I personally don't like these kinds of rules that are just intended to create arbitrary limits and challenges.

How can you name a daughter a faction heir?

You adopt a Roman. ~:flirt:

In my Arverni campaign I only play with four house rules: no skirmishers in field armies, giving all generals at least some basic combat experience, always using the general cam and always occupying other Gallic settlements. Most of my decisions are made on ad hoc RP basis.

Do you also secure the galatian settlements?

How do you even survive the first turn with these houserules in EB? (Except for the not trading ancillaries and the primogenitura)
You will be fighting LOTS of AS and Carthie stacks, so I don't think you can apply most of your rules if you're not very advanced in your campaign and swim in cash.
I am much more flexible with houserules, especially in the early game you can't care much about rules with most factions.

Not as a house rule, but if I get an adventurous general, have enough resources and the right political situation for it... why not?

It's not on the cards in my current campaign, though.

I'm speaking in general, personally I have no rules written down somewhere, I just try to play in a historical/realistic manner (taking into account characters' traits, more or less historical army compositions), but with some fluidity, taking into consideration how the game progresses etc.

Since my understanding of 1st century BC Ptolemaic military is rather lacking, I'll refrain from commenting on your rules.
