View Full Version : Intermittent campaign choppiness?

I'm new to EB. I just started playing it. After reading and looking around, I went with Extended Alexader Final mini-mod with EB1.2. It should be installed correctly with fixes applied.

The campaign map is laggy/choppy. It works smooth in the campaign for awhile, then goes choppy again for awhile, then goes smooth again. No CTDs yet, no battle problems, or any other problems that I can think of.

Xp, 2 gigs, 7950 gx2, fx-55. The drives have been tested for errors, same as the RAM.

I don't think its a hardware issue, considering it works smooth for awhile before its choppy, then goes smooth again. Probably software. Its playable, unless it gets worse as my empire gets bigger, but it is annoying as it takes longer to move/select things. Any known issues with this? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Apple.

RTW has a memory leak.

The best way to handle it is to close RTW after 2 hours and restart the game.

It starts not long after I load a game. After awhile it will work smooth again, then start the whole process over again.

It doesn't get worse as the time goes on.

Check if you have any processes running in your memory (like antivir, defrag...). Alex.exe should normally speed up RTW and not decrease it...:(

So should I kill all processes in the task manager? Which should be left alone?

I did do all the advice, except the part about changing in-game settings at the top of the following post, https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=75948.

The intermittent campaign choppiness is still around.

Try memtest to check on your memory.

I've done a few passes on the memory and there are no errors.

I read somewhere that moving a unit outside it's maximum movement points (so that you see the red/yellow/blue/etc lines) can cause lag. It does seem to happen when I start moving units quickly around the map.

-edit- I did some testing and I think that is the problem.

Why does that happen? Is it an EB specific problem, never happened to me in any TW games? Any way fix it so that it doesn't happen? Or is the only solution to move a unit out of a city when it happens, which does fix the problem?

Thanks,
Apple.

EB maxes the RTW-source code in nearly any aspect, so it is due to EB (and the big campaign map), but for me it is a acceptable "bug".

Yes, moving another unit is the only way to get past this lagging period.

I think me (using a rather old computer by today's standard), has the biggest buggy game, but even with 5-10 minutes loading time, everything just fine and my campaign map is slow, but not choppy...

I use 1.7 Ghz CPU, RAM 512 Mb, VGA 128 Mb, Windows Xp... and guess, I put everything on low, or medium options, with unit size on large....

They run just fine... but before I play the game... I put every process down except explorer svchost winlogon, and some certain system process....
