Alright, so I'm probably 4 years behind everybody else, but I finally got around to trying out my install of RTW... clicked on "quick battle" and it gives me some Britons defending Londinium from the intentions of some of Caesar's finest.

As soon as they break down my wooden fence, the whole lot of them rush the gap... so I let them in a little and unleash some warhounds (although Medieval is my period of choice, they don't have these warhounds - which are well cool!)... seconds later, the House Of Julli is routed off the field.

I'm sure the Romans will be a much bigger challenge in a "normal" battle set at the hardest level, but this made me laugh.

O, here's a replay... http://www.mediafire.com/file/mym0zyyggyg/Warhounds.rpy (No mods installed, just official update patches)

I actually got RTW so that I could play the Alexander expansion... well everybody's gotta try being Alexander at least once...

You will soon find out many units are very over powered with their morale effects. Dogs are one example. Battles are much more challenging on Very Hard difficulty because the enemy gets a +7 attack and defence bonus to every one of their units on the battlefield. This means you have to use flanking and morale effects to their full advantage.
