View Full Version : Sci Large Hadron Collider sabotage from the "future"
I'm not sure if I should laugh or be amazed (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/science/space/13lhc.html?_r=1)
A pair of otherwise distinguished physicists have suggested that the hypothesized Higgs boson, which physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveler who goes back in time to kill his grandfather.

This must be what they're going to use an excuse the next time it breaks :laugh4:

Well, that's a brilliant way of slacking off. :laugh4:
"No, you see, we made it, but it's creation caused a ripple in time that caused it to, um, not exist." *goes back to playing solitaire*

You know, that's the kind of information you need before you spend €5bn building the thing.

I think CERN just got worth it! It keeps getting better and better. The 'End of the World' scare from last year. When it was said that the whole earth would be engulfed by a black hole emerging from CERN.
Then later it turned out that CERN was masterminded by Al-Qaida, which hoped to use it as a superweapon to destroy civilization with. (Move over Death Star!)
Now it turns out to be a time machine build by the future.
Genius, genius! It is all so genius! We are soooo getting our money's worth! :laugh4:
Besides, this theory is the most sensible to come out of theorethical physics since 1905.
(But I do have this nagging feeling in the back of my head that this whole five billion euro project was a prank by a few geeks. Lord knows they're laughing at us all right now on their hyper secret, private internet.
'Really, trust us! This will advance European physics...no! we need it to be 25 kilometers wide, really...surely you pencil pushers are not so small of mind you can't envisage the necessity of this particle experiment?....what if the Americans beat us to it....etc')

These bozos have watched too much Star Trek. Suffocate yourself as a baby if you believe in paradox.

Surely for the ripple of the higgs boson to exist, the LHC would have to have succeeded. If it came back in time to stop itself from been created it would have to be created. Otherwise how would it go back and stop itself.
My head hurts.:wall:

That would be brilliant!
Scientists finally tire of the stupidity of the general population and just start making stuff up... I think they could keep us fooled for years as well....
More, though not so serious, trouble came this week:
On Tuesday 3 November, a bird carrying a baguette bread caused a short
circuit in an electrical outdoor installation that serves sectors 7-8 and
8-1 of the LHC. The knock-on effects included an interruption to the
operation of the LHC cryogenics system. The bird escaped unharmed but
lost its bread.
The standard failsafe systems came into operation and after the cause
was identified, re-cooling of the machine began and the sectors were
back at operating temperature last night. The incident was similar in
effect to a standard power cut, for which the machine protection systems
are very well prepared.

Dont worry its obvious the Doc and Marty MacFly need 121gigawatts of power to get back to 1985

Other dimensions.
The grandfather paradox is impossible to occur, as doing it would only affect another dimension, a dimension where there is no "you". But you still exist, as you are from another dimension, thus would not be subject to that dimension.
So the theory about it rippling back in time and cross dimensions would stop us from doing it, till we reached a point in the future before this, where we could.
