Does anyone know where this might be from? Is there a Carthaginian preview I am unaware of? The little symbol next to the dude on the far right looks like something from EB...

This is RS isn't it?
I'd guess Rome total realism, they've got those glossy faction icons
Yep its RTR (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=226450)
Roma surrectum and RTR have really beautiful units - sometimes I asked myself if they were MTW2 mods.

RTR Iberian conflict. refer to twcenter.net for more information

Actually, because many of us have trouble growing facial hair, we don't want our units to have the glorious beards we lack. We're jealous enough of the guys as it is. :beam:

I guees they look more badass like that...:clown:
It has probably to do sth with white being the colour of death for the Carthaginians, so they would wan't to intimidate the enemy in such way...
A bit of the topic... Wil the Sacred Band remain in EBII? Since i think there are no historical records of them being used

Yep this sacred band appears in RTR: the Iberian conflict.
Alhtough there "ready" stance has changed alot - on this pick they use the Vanilla phalanx formation while in game they use overhand spear with shield wall ability. There the best infantry unit in the whole mod.
I also have heard that white was the Carthaginian colour of death and was ment to intimidate the enemy - I wonder if it really worked...

The SB description in EB1 mentions them being destroyed in the battles for Sicily before EB's time-frame. However, later records mention an elite-unit that took the Sacred-Band's traditional position in the battleline. The name and identity of this unit are not known, so EB went with the older Sacred Band.

Given the color white and an elephant, I would be more terrified of the elephant.

Correct. What the Sacred Band really was was the elite right wing of the hoplite phalanx. The Greeks merely referred to it as 'sort of sacred band'. Similarly, the more elite and better equipped of the Carthaginian nobles in the cavalry were viewed as a sacred band.

Well you were Belgian right? Then there's a good chance you do have Germanic ancestors and Belgian (Celtic/Germanic), you should send a photo of you to the EB team for reference. :clown:

That makes sense, so they should probably form part of my battle line next time i play with carthage. I never really used them, since i thought they were never used. I didn't even think the name was given to them by the greeks:shame:

that's a sword. I think you already know that though :clown:
and he's an Arab-specifically abd al-malik ibn marwan, who was an umayyad Caliph in the late 7th century. this particular coin was before he began to issue a style of dinar independant of the roman pattern, which presented the faces of people on it. He decided we need a new unique style, to flip the finger at the Byzantines, who at the time partially controlled the mint.

Do you mean that there isn't solid evidence that these were sacred units? I am surprised. I thought we knew a bit more about them.
just fyi, this unit is also in RTR-FoE which we will be releasing in a few days...
The EB member Urnamma had access to some sources at his university that I cannot find. Sadly he is on hiatus atm. I personally cannot condone the notion of these units as Sacred as none of the sources I have access to mention such. Granted I do not have access to Zonaras, Dio Cassius or a number of other late historians. I only have access to older, better known, sources (Polybius, Livy, Diodorus, Dionysius, etc).
Thanks for the answer.

I suspect yes - about 1/3 of all factions (and there units) in FoE were already in TIC and I think they will not remove the Carthaginian Elite.

Can we call them 'The Elite Baby Killers of Carthage' instead? It has a nice ring to it.
Actually there is considerable debate about the validity of that myth. No, the unit name is still in the works but the current most popular suggestion has been 'Citizen Noble Cavalry'
The reason for this is that there isn't really a good word for elite in this sense in Punic. Other options included 'Right Wing Cavalry' which is both too long and too specific.

Picked Citizen Cavalry? Makes them sounds elevated and specially purposed for something that may or may not be the right wing.

EB1 seems to use "Alupim / Aloophim" for 2 units, which is translated to "elite" in the English unit name. What does that mean then?
the english names for units in EBI are not direct translations, but rather guides for english speakers.
Foot
Is there a chance the sacred band will be one of those "one-off" units like in M2TW Crusades? I'd love a handful of those, like a superheavy Vasci for an Iberian faction, or a single Argyrasipdae "stormtrooper" for the AS. Just one of a kind, unspammable. I know unit limits can create that atmosphere well enough, but there's something truly elite about a "one-only" unit.
Not sure we'd need one for every faction, but IMHO there were some creme-de-la-creme forces that could not be in two places at once.
Given the color white and an elephant, I would be more terrified of the elephant.
So were the Sacred Band a bit of a white elephant then? umm..you know what I mean...

Right Wing Cavalry makes me think about this:
In politics, right-wing, rightist and the Right are used to describe certain postitions and ideologies. While use of the term Right varies, it is most commonly used to refer to support for preserving traditional or cultural values and customs or for maintaining some form of social hierarchy or private control of the means of production.
Well, just call it something EB-ish
