The title says it... In my campaing i usually build forts near every mountain pass, or every river to keep the enemies out... And i have no need to pay for them... I just build them whenever i want, as many times that i want... IMHO if the forts costed some money, it would add to the strategic part of the game (playing as Pontos you would need to carefully consider where and how to build your forts, in one campaign i had like 8 forts holding down the seleucids, giving a few years to prepare before they could attack me:yes:)

Why would you pay for it? Those are just temporary forts, which are built by your own soldiers (whose upkeeps include this too technically) and they use the material what they can get in the neighbourhood.

Yeah, it doesn't make since to pay for it.

Your soldiers build it after a march, for protection and because it just is good strategic planning.

What they could have, as an option, is a way to upgrade a basic fort to something stronger, then you should have to pay for that.

Hiya, this ain't Crussader Kingdom's campaign... You could only built wooden stacks, and no stone fort here...:wall:

It would be nice to have better forts but, it makes sense IMO that the wooden forts should be free.

As i see it, in EB forts are not used for your armies to rest on the march, but to block access for enemy units. I usually occupy a fort with a unit that is almost depleated, and it will hold the AI for 2 turns.

It's unpractical to use forts for your armies to rest on the march, it's much better just to leave your army as it is, so you have a better chance against the enemy in an open fight.

The way i see it forts are more defensive structure to keep the enemies out, not to rest your army.
And that would cost some money IRL

Nah I think having "better" forts would be somewhat ahistorical. BTW I don't even know for wich faction it would be historical to use forts, besides the Romani.
Anyone knows?

What about in the desert?

Since the AI doesn't use them, it's fine to use them as the Romani and roleplay (After the Marian reforms, of course).

A pallisade, some tents and a few simple watch towers. That could easily be accomplished, with local meterials, in a matter of a few hours.

you're right actually. Packed sand makes very effective walls. Better to mix in rocks, roots and whatever you can find if you want the fort to be permanent tho.

I see what you mean, but this is only a problem for the A.I. You can limit yourself to one fort per access-route, and the problem is solved.

Forts are great, and as a Roman campaigner I used them a lot. That's a myth that forts in EB are temporary. Just send in a spy, and as he resides there the fort is permanently. I have forts in my campaign especially in Iberia and one just outside Rome that are at least 50 years old and in need of some maintenance:laugh4:.

Cheers.

As for me I use forts in a permanent way to role play cities that did not make it into EB duo to engine limitations, every time it get's "destroyed" I send another FM to rebuild it.

It was a good joke. Even if the EB team wanted it to be programmed that way i don't think they can.
