View Full Version : Are Scandinavians superior to everyone else?

I was just watching a french documentary*, and it struck me; the narrator was talking french! If I was in another country, like England, Germany or Italy, he would've been dubbed, but he wasn't dubbed here. In Norway, Denmark and Sweden we don't dub anything apart from cartoons aimed at 7-year olds(like Lion King), and even those are always screened in two version, one dubbed and one original. French, German, English, whatever, we don't dub things.
But it's done everywhere else. Does this simply make me and my Swedish and Danish friends superior to everyone else on the planet? Why are everyone else afraid of foreign languages, why don't they want to learn them?
*incidentally about Mein Kampf....

No.
Swedens greatest tradition is stealing meatballs from Italy and putting them in jelly instead of Marninira
Norway still hunts whales because its like that one kid in high school who wanted to be cool so he did really stupid crap to get attention.
Denmark has really done nothing, ever. I really can't say anything bad about them other than there capital cities name is a blatant rip off of smokeless tabacco.
Finlands greateast treasure is killing a whole bunch of Russians....like it's something hard to do.
Iceland just sucks.
Oh and Lutafisk. That's turrible.
The only redeemable lot is the Sami.
About Subbing/Dubbing:
No, it is basically you speak a minority language and the problem is, it costs money to translate it.
This again, also happens vice-versus. There are many films and programmes done in languages such as French/Norwegian/Russian/Etc which simply aren't translated into English, because the people who create it, don't want to pay people to recast the voices and all the effort it might involve to do it, hence, only do a subs.
About Languages:
This is a different issue, but a big problem is, there are simply too many languages to learn. Also with English being the most spoken language and its status of being the international Lingua Franca, majority of people from other nations speak and read/write English thus in England/America/Anglosphere, there isn't a priority in learning other languages as others simply speak English.
Are Scandinavians superior to everyone else?
Obviously the answer is no. Everyone is equal.

So is Bulgarian, Romanian, Greek and a bunch of other dubbers.
The difference is that we've got oil to pay for everything, while all they have is unemployed people. So.... Considering that they lack money, and we've got too much to spend, I ask again, why do they translate, while we don't? I mean... Explanations other than us being the greatest people of earth, of course.
Point is; a dubbing stuff doesn't sell to anyone over the age of 10 here. But it does in other countries. Why?
@Strike: I'm going to have to give you the grade "Epic Fail". Scandinavia is just Denmark, Norway and Sweden, it doesn't include Finland or Iceland.

..................... err, we don't need to because in the last 250 years we spent a fair amount of effort getting everyone else to speak our language.

You Norwegians have always been crazy.
The focus on languages no doubt is a combination of a minority native tongue and a reliance on overseas trade in commerce. Ergo, you went places and needed to talk to people, ergo you learned the local languages.
Your socialised education may actually have been constructed by someone with a brain, as well, rather than by the Labour Party.

No we don't actually know the languages.... Almost everyone(except some elderly I guess) knows english, and quite a few people have at least some knowledge of either German or French, but not much more than that. But we have subtitles instead of dubbing, simply because dubbing stuff is.... Well, lame.

I usually prefer just subtitles too, but I think the reason is money more than anything. The English dubbing on Bruce Lee's movies for instance is soooo awefull!

I think because people (like my family :P) love to watch movies casually and not pay that good of attention (cause they are talking, reading, eating, etc). It is really easy to eat popcorn and listen to people talking in English, and get the general gist of the movie without paying a lot of attention. With subtitles on the other hand, you gotta pay a lot more attention to the movie.

hah, you should try poland, they just lower the original soundtrack volume and put a voice-over of the dialogue done by one person over the top.

I remember in Latvia, they had 2 to 3 sets of subtitles depending, though usually just Latvian and Russian. The clincher was, during one of the movies, they spoke Chinese or something at a scene, and there were no English subtitles! That scene was evil.
Though in another movie, I think it was Rock'n'Roller, they had this Russian bad-guy and everyone was laughing at he was pictured/stereotype, they laughed even more when in a scene they were speaking Russian (Which was also subtitled in English), what the subtitle said and what they actually spoke in Russian were two vastly different things. They spoke something like "damn, it is another scene" and it was subtitled as "Let's go and kill her".

We're forced to have the subtitle the media decides to use, which means that some fine programs gets ruined by new-norwegian subtitles.... That only happens on the state-owned NRK though, all the others points their middle finger at anything but standard norwegian....

I would say 10 years ago and beyond it was also a matter of national pride/ethnocentrism, etc. What? My kid learn Spanish? No way, this is America.
Well, aside from makeing you more competitive in the job market, the reality is finally starting to set in with the old guard that you need to have a second language, at the least Spanish if you live in the US

We simply decided to keep our TV German, I don't know when or why exactly but not everyone can learn a new language from watching a few movies and personally I find subs rather distracting and use them only when I have to, I'd rather look at the details in the picture itself etc., it's why I like Blu-Rays so much as well, my ears can receive the language bits, it's what I have them for, so my eyes don't have to multitask everything.
On DVDs and Blu-Rays etc. we usually get to choose anyway, just on TV most of it (not all of it) is dubbed. I don't even see why it seems to annoy you that we are happy with our dubbing other than that you're a bunch of elitist, wannabe-intellectual, self-centered people who want to force their views on us? :clown:

Demonstrably false. Using almost any metric: height, weight, general health, intelligence, oxygen capacity, ability to tolerate badly dubbed foreign film, etc., people are anything BUT equal.
I prefer subtitles to dubbing BY FAR -- though I still adored Once Upon a Time in the West. One of my more interesting film experiences was watching "Dita Seskova." It was a Czech film that I saw in a class at A.U. once. Decent enough film, but the subtitling was in white and many of the exterior shots were against snowy backgrounds.....and they didn't switch subtitle color. As my Czech is somewhat less developed than my Vulcan this did diminish Forman's effort a bit for me.

That is why we have movies on SBS (http://www.sbs.com.au/television)! Err, actually they are sophisticated foreign films which are important pieces of cinema, which may happen to have some nudity and adult themes. Something films on SBS are somewhat notorious for. SBS basically shows any non English movies and series with subtitles, but the main channels don't really show any non English language content. Thick accents from the US, UK and New Zealand not withstanding.
I personally think that if a country needs to dub everything furrin it watches, that shows that they are not all that mature and are hostile to outside cultures. Some people complain that they don't want to read so much! Hello! English isn't the only language out there in the world, and not all the good movies or TV is produced in English speaking countries!

Yes, so instead of not showing it, we just dub it, and we dub your silly english, too, not because german is the only language out there but because when a factory worker comes home after many hours of work, she/he wants to enjoy a movie and not study several new languages. Maybe that's why Burkhas (and the morbidly obese) consistently rate as a 0 for me, if you can't see the confidence, then there's no confidence at all. Major turnoff.
