My favorite region of Texas is the Hill Country.
Anyone else?

I love San Antonio. In fact, I love it so much that I told the Army I wanted to be stationed in Texas. Anywhere in Texas!
They said Fort Bliss.. which is next to El Paso.. d'oh!
But I'm enjoying San Antonio while I'm here. This city is AWSOME. We might have to go drinking some time SFTS ;)
El Paso is like San Antonio but with less history and more drug cartels. It is beautifual out there though.
And yes we deffintley should meet up. How much longer do you think you'll be in SA?
And now we may procede to talk about anything TEXAS.

True story, I almost took a job in Austin out of college. One of the major reasons that I didn't take it was because it was in Texas. :laugh4: Just didn't want to live down there. The other job I took was in NC, which is where I wanted to move to all along.

I worked that Bavaria is the Yorkshire of Germany, since Yorkshire likes nobody, and vice versa.

Yes. Also, there are a lot of similarities. Compare:
- both people occupy a relatively large state to the south
- both people are iconic to there respective countries
- both people are thought to wear funny cloth and hats
- both people are famous for fancying cattle more than others
- both people feature a distinct dialect (tho the Bavarians have the advantage in this case)
STFS and Csargo. They may be obnoxious Texans, but they're our obnoxious Texans.
maybe.
thing is, Texas doesn't have all the attractions other states have.
the only things going for it in fact are in fact a single president-not a popular one*-and peopled with humans possessing the ego of a small planet each. the last one I do admit is an amusing-and perhaps great-trait. and don't get me started on the Alamo-I read the history back and forth, and I came to the conclusion that Colonel Travis was either mad or on something. then again, so was Santa Anna.
I might be severely biased though-I did practically rot under the weather there for 3 1/2 years (Brazoria county, south of Houston).

I'll be in San Antonio 'till late December. Been here since June, pretty sure i've hit up most of the major drinking establishments. Where do you usually drink at? I can be found along the Riverwalk or up at Cowboys most weekends, depending on what I'm looking for (booz, women, or both).
Dang, I come back on the 16th. We should hang out brah.
I usually drink at any place that doenst check ID ~;) Im sure as a forigener you're still getting a kick out of downtown and thats great Im glad your liking it. I have spent many a friday night at cowboys they usually have half decent music.
Have you been around to the area around St.Marys street? I know there are allot of places there they cater to college age students (including the White Rabbit which is the place to go for some rock n roll...and meth)

Actually the White Rabbit has been recommended to me several times, but I haven't gone yet.
Honestly, Cowboys is awful. Only reason I go there is because my girlfriend loves to dance. Like, seriously.. it's not natural.
For straight drinking I like the Riverwalk though. Especially since I can get drunk and be bad at Coyote Ugly's, then go chill at Mad Dogs, then go eat at one of the many Mexican Eateries, all within like fifteen feet. 'tis great.
Supposedly it's a good time, I've never been not really my scene.
hehehe. Please tell me your g/f can 2step and square dance.
The riverwalk is kind of pricey man, I know being at Sam means you're close but there are much cheaper dives.
Have you been to Liberty Bar? That's a treat. Also if you even need some good eateries ask me, I know this city like the back of my hand.

I'd have to say my favorite town in Texas is Dallas...though I was born in Austin, I just don't remember anything about it.
Also, Hello!~
There were two political camps(they never formed parties) in Texas: Those that wanted to be Independent and those that wanted annexation from the very get go. It is interesting to note that none of the original Tejanos or Texians who had been in Texas long before the War for Texas Independence wanted annexation but were out-numbered by the huge migrations that took place directly before and after the war. So in the end the numericaly superior newcomers swayed the politics to annexation. It's one of the reasons that Texian families still identify themselves as such, to identify themselves as a more respected(though not necessarily wealthier or influential or powerful) and seperate class within Texas.

It snowed when I was there last December, but it didn't pile up. It suddenly got warm a few days later.
I think Texas has the most attractive women in the US after South Carolina. By most I mean most likely you'll see an attractive women, not the most in total numbers since I don't know about that. I'm saying this from a neutral perspective. I'm from neither Texas or SC.

What about Minnesotta? All that Scandinavian blood?
Never been to Minnesota, but even the guys who hate Texas are always quick to point out the massive numbers of 'hot chicks' we have. I think it might be true cuz for the second time I'm living in a foreign state(I'm in the Army) and have a hard time understanding what dudes mean when they call so many women here 'hot'. Geeze Colorado's got a lot of ugly chicks. Or at least Colorado Springs does.
I guess that since Texas is physically warmer than, say, Colorado, girls are more likely to be wearing more revealing clothing, at least giving the impression that Texas has more Hot Chicks.

hey, Colorado can be hot too. i was there a few years ago in June and it was around 104F.
No matter how revealing or unrevealing the clothes, the face never lies.
And in Colorado Springs the girls wear mini-skirts and the like to bars/clubs even in the dead of winter. And it's not just me saying that Texas has a lot of hot chicks. I'll say again: even the non-Texans who hate Texas say that Texas has a lot of hot chicks as compared to where they are from.

I ask because The Miz (WWE) was on australian TV tonight and he just reinforces the stereotypes of all americans... Thankfully some 'merican members here sway me in the direction of thinking there may be some hope for ameriland.
I ask because I wouldnt want people to think I'm British. Would they want me to say such things as "shrimp" and possibly "on the barbie" in the same sentence?
An Australian? You kidding me? We'd expect you to party and to party hard. As far as expectations on anything else it would all be on an individual basis.
EDIT: and maybe the party hard thing is only just my own individual expectation.

Haven't met a real live rootin' tootin' (which means different things in Australian slang than it does in U.S., let me tell you) Texan on his home patch, although I did see that film about the Permian gridiron team.
Yep I know.
Australia.
Uh huh, you know it.
Definately the capital of AFL. and the arts and all that. But you know what i mean.
Plus you're the closest to Tassie and well...
Well I can only go from the people I have met and from them Texas must be a beaut place.

Yep, it looks like a spadge. That makes Melbourne the navel of the world.
As for having gays, we have tons and like all the other groups in this diverse tolerant (if somewhat gloomy) state, they're quietly happy (in a dressed-in-black kind of way). We're the King Gee state, we don't try to look good so we do.
Some people equate Queensland with Texas, but really WA is a better western state analogue. Qld is more like Florida (schoolies, retirees, corruption) with a slice of Texas (ranching, mining, corruption) thrown in.
Well at least they have the Pev, that counts for a lot in my book.

Dear SFTS,
My girlfriend will be vacationing in San Antonio this week. Please try not to seduce her with your Texan masculinity. I can't compete with it. Also, recommendations for things to do in San Antonio for someone who is under 21 and allergic to peppers would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the late reply man, I just saw this.
Hmmmmm
If you are one for history you can go to the Alamo and the missons those are actually kind of cool esp the Alamo.
The rvierwak is a must for anyone
A trip to the hill country would be really nice, its very pretty
Enough muesuems to choke a horse
Market Square has alot of cool Mexican/cowboy stuff. Kind of a trap but still a nice taste of SA
I mean is there a specific thing you want to do? For first timers I would reccomend the river walk then a swing by the alamo and a day trip into the hill country but there is allot else to do to
As for food what's your posion? I can give you a few place.....however while the riverwalk is nice most of the food there isnt and the stuff that is costs milions

Only my girlfriend and her family are visiting. I'm unfortunately stuck in Wisconsin. They've already been to the Alamo and the Riverwalk but I'll pass on the market square and the hill country suggestions. Thank you very much.

The area around Austin just looks awesome, but the liberal tendencies of many people some there tend to collide with my philosophies. I went to Barton Springs one time, and it is AMAZING. Best place I've ever swam. You can see at least 15 feet down!

In our hearts, the entire world wishes it was Texas. Even if we can but dream, at least we can get a little taste of Texas culture and greatness:

Two people from Texas came up for a conference I went to for my job. They were here for two days, and it was some of the most beautiful weather this summer - 75 degrees and sunny on the ocean shore. They left, and the rains will probably come back tomorrow.

In my rockin' '80s, REBEL REBEL's club tours included some Texas venues, including the Roxy in El Paso and The Upstairs Club in Abilene. We also played a club in Odessa, but I can't recall the name of it.
Aside from babes-a-licious and one particularly strange and delightful date, what I remember the most about the Roxy was the mechanical, coin-operated "bull" you could try and ride. I didn't try it, but I observed some buckaroos go for it and it was quite entertaining to watch.
In Abilene, they drank their beer out of gigantic mason jars. We got chased out of town by the police on our last night, which will always stick in my mind as one of the most memorable of my road trip experiences. Drinks were on the house, singer got plastered on JD, proceeded to rebuke the annoyed motel manager and destroy the place a bit, etc.. We escaped, but it was a bit of a tight dodge, with Barry (the singer) tucked away passed out in the back of our 17-foot truck.

No. Clearly this is the truth staring you all in the face. Washington should rightfully claim its place as the greatest of all the states. We have Microsoft, Bill Gates, Boeing, Nintendo, Seattle (and its gigantic port), Apples, agriculture, the Space Needle, logging, fishing, trade, Nirvana, and just about everything else, including smart Asians. Washington will claim its place as the greatest of the States! We will claim for ourselves the leadership of the entire USA! We will march on the District of Columbia and burn it to the ground for stealing our name! We will march on Texas and burn it to the ground for having dumb people! WE will rule the USA! WE will rule the continent! WE will rule the Earth! WE will rule the Org.! WASHINGTONIANS: TO VICTORY AND WORLD DOMINATION!!!

Hey I'm off for a holiday to a big beautiful state where the stars at night are big and bright, full of miners and cactus (did I mention it was big) and the highways go forever, and there's some desert (big desert actually) and some sports teams and some cattle (big cattle) and famous for miners and resources and millionaires etc.
Anyway its a pretty big ol' state, about a million square miles, in fact its soooo big you could lose Texas in there and no-one would notice. Srsly. I mean its not that much bigger than Texas, maybe only three or four times as big. Little place called Western Australia.
If you like I can scope some camp sites in case the whole of Texas wanted to come over, always welcome boys and girls!

"In 1845, Texas annexed the United States. About fifteen years later, through a total misunderstanding, several states had a sharp disagreement with Texas. If not for the clumsy 'assistance' of some other states, Texas, naturally, would have prevailed, as she always does. At any rate, things were cleared up and all the Other States were allowed to rejoin Texas.
Which is as it should be." :P
