A lot man. You will spend around 5000 koku for all the upgrades but your units will be much more powerful in attack and also they shall be much more protected against projectile units.

Don't use only honour, use theforce, too.

Try upgrading just once with each eg. improved armour and improved weapons and improved honour level all in the one provence. The units produced there will be tougher, live longer in battle and not flee as often unless they face higher honour troops or superior numbers.
You must do this to win in a reasonable time frame, otherwise the enemy troops become too tough and run over your troops.

well maybe that's why i've been running the enemy over...i have two provinces continously pumping out legendary armoured/weaponed units. i went ahead and got the upgrades early on figuring they were worth something.
I dont recall the name of the movie, but there was one where Clint Eastwood went to a shootout with a metal plate under his vest. And the 'bad guy' shoots him, square in the chest. So he gets up, lifts his vest, and unveils the metal plate, making the 'bad guy' gasp in disbelief.
Now you tell me: do you think ole Clint appreciated the 'armor'? So too will your men... 'Nuff said...
Heck, I like to cloth my ashigaru in legendary armor... that way, when they die in battle, they roll downhill like huge iron bowling balls and shatter the enemy formations with ease! Sometimes, I even roll live ashigaru downhill!!

Vanya's got a better point that may first appear! (Not that I'm saying anything about V's usual "Musket Wedgie" tactic...) http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
Anyway, an ashi with an armor upgrade can take down any cavalry unit you throw at them (provided they don't panic). Give 'em a sowrdsmith upgrade, and they'll win before they have a chance to panic. They also become much more effective arrow-soaks, and still only cost 133 koku. (99 if you act now!)
Apparently we'll be able to get these upgrades in MP soon - Gold-armored ashigaru should drastically change the way things are played!
In answer to the original question - definitely get whatever upgrade that are available! Your main spear dojo MUST have an armory available! A swordsmith in your archery province makes your archers much nastier in a melee. Palaces mean that the units won't rout as easily. +3 morale bonus means fearless troops! Fun stuff!

Ohh, Banzai! Your comments made me drool... add that legendary palace to get the +3 morale bonus, and your gold-plated ashigaru with triple-extra-sharp pig-stickers become Rambo clones! (Or X-Men?)
When I get to this level of development, I usually put my ashigaru in tights and a cape. And I no longer carry serf-chukkas, for I EXPECT them to FLY on their OWN onto the enemy formations then...!
