There's this Spartan general Carthage can recruit in the game, that is probably him. So what happened to the Spartans?

Carthage can't recruit him: he is Xanthippos, and he is spawned if Carthage needs a Greek (Spartan) mercenary to sort out its army (or at least that was what he was hired for historically).

Yeah, It's Xantipphos, check Polybios, he said he won a battle for Carthage and then went back to his homeland because of the jealousy of the other Carthaginian generals.

In my current campaign, Xanthippos had a Carthaginian BG, so evidently the AI adopted him as a FM. Unless there are native Qarthadastim who get called Xanthippos as well.

Yeah i think there is. I guess the team had to leave the name Xanthippos as eligible... I had a admiral xanthiposs once

Not in my case, because the Xanthippos guy had a Qarthadastim ethnicity and portrait. So I guess he probably wasn't the Spartan one.
