Welcome to the .Org!

I'd suggest looking through the RTW Guides forum:

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=78

And these two guides in particular:

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=38382

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=45315

Hope that helps!

Hmm.. new question. What city should I go for first, and then which way should I expand to best bring the whole world under my rule? :egypt:

Grab the small rebel city just above you, on the left. (Segesta?) War with the Gauls is going to come, build up a sizeable force and take the two cities(Patvium and something) to cement your holdings in Northern Italy.

You can then expand eastwards, there are two/three (One may be taken) rebel cities that way, but this may lead to war with Germany/Thrace/Dacia/Macedon.

Westward is another rebel city, then Gaul. A good way to proceed if you are looking to hold in one spot is to take that city, then either go northward or eastward.

You can also naval-grab Caralis, the island west of Italy. Do this early or someone else may grab it.

Eventual directions should be to control Iberia, right up through germany, to the Sycthia border. the Brutii should go through Greece and into Asia minor, while the Scipii should come up against the Egyptians, down through carthage and Numidia.

First few turns went well. Was able to take that one rebel settlement and the gaul settlement with the port. My capitol is cranking out hastati, so my military is looking pretty good. Few close calls in a field battle I had with 600 of their soldiers vs 300 of mine. :sweatdrop: Tough battle, almost lost it. Lost about 30% of my force, and almost lost my general but I still won. Next turn their settlement was mine :whip: Will be posting more soon!

Nice start, soon Europe will fall before your lovely Hastati.

Mmmm. Hastati.

:smitten:

 Well, just lost my 2nd best general because he wasn't attacking some spearmen that were stabbing him . Good general, may he rest in peace :skull:. Took the 2nd gallic settlement, decided to move my main force west, and have picked up a couple of barb mercs. Soon, all of western europe will be mine. Also building up a force to go take on those greeks. From what i've read, trade there is good. Just hope I can beat the Brutii to the good stuff. :laugh4:

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 02:12
Took the rebel settlement to the west and the other gaul settlement just west of it. Lost 60% of my army in 2 battles though, along with my faction leader. :shame: Also, my attack on greece has been pushed back for 2 reasons. 1, a senate mission had me on my way to a war with carthage, so far i've taken lilybauem from them, and 2, those macedonians are starting to scare me with their empire. :sweatdrop: Gonna have to stop my advance into whatever part of europe i'm going to, unless I want to lose my 1 and only attacking/homeland defense force. So, i'm currently stretched thin, and taking heavy losses in europe, thanks to their forests that they can hide in over there. :furious3: Any ideas on what I should do now? :help:

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 02:44
Lost my whole european steamroller force in a settlement that is now under gaul control, and the alliance that me and the germans had was betrayed when they sieged another town. With my most powerful armies in africa and greece, things aren't looking good. Starting to retrain my force in italy, but I most likely wont be in time to save Massilia. :help:

pevergreen
11-30-2009, 03:01
Oh no!

Could you give a screenshot or two so I can see whats happening?

On the generals, and cavalry in general: Charge, then withdraw, they get cut down so fast in a protracted melee. I've killed off over 1200 gauls only yesterday (this is on normal unit sizes as well) with just 200 horse. Charge in the rear, while the hastati/others have them tied up in melee. Once they flee, have the foot charge someone else, cav can either capture or charge again.

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 03:18
Heh. TY for that tip. But... how do I take screenies? :embarassed:

pevergreen
11-30-2009, 03:36
I can't remember if there is an ingame shortcut...try f12, then check the main RTW folder for something...

Otherwise, printscreen, then go into something like MSPaint, and hit paste.

Sorry for taking so long to reply! :sweatdrop:

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 03:44
NP, so what would I be looking for in the RTW folder to make me able to take screen shots, and how do I post them after that? My empire is going down the drain. My force in greece was absolutely slaughtered, and I lost Massilia. But, there is some hope. A new, promising general is leading a huge force into western europe currently, and Carthage is mine. :egypt:

pevergreen
11-30-2009, 03:46
Sounds good.

When/if you find them, go to a hosting website like https://imageshack.us/ and upload it from there.

Once its uploaded, it should give you a whole bunch of options, simple one is to take the "Link for forums" option, copy and paste into a post here.

If it gives you two options for forums, it doesnt matter, Org will accept them both.

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 03:48
Sorry for my computer stupidity, but where would I find the take screen option in the RTW folder? :laugh4:

I don't remember. :laugh4:

At work, so i can't check...

Let me do some searching.

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 03:54
Heh, ty. :embarassed: About to take back Massilia with a full stack army!:2thumbsup: Also, my army that i'm building in Carthage is almost complete! Soon those clowns will face my wrath!
:clown::whip:

pevergreen
11-30-2009, 04:00
Yeah, Carthage. They'll get whats coming to them.

The only way to take screenshots is to use the Printscreen button and go to MSPaint, through the program files in your start bar.

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 04:07
And then I copy and paste into a post?

Go up and take gaul, try to avoid war with Spain if you can, but if you can't, hold off the Gauls and take the Iberian penisula. Then push forward to the german border, hold and take Britan, then through germany to Sythcia.

I wouldn't do much more in africa. Maybe grab one or two more along the northern sea towards spain, but hold and get the land you need in europe.

Have you patched the game at all?

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 04:32
Yes, 1.5. Ok, got a newly built army in Italy now, should be beyond easy to take Europe. In Africa, i'm going to take Tingi so I can use it as a base to launch amphibious assault against Spain from. Things are looking up now.

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 04:41
Germans just begged me for a ceasefire, got both vicus settlements in return. :2thumbsup: Oh, and lol, forgot to post, one of my fleets fought an admiral named Hannibal :laugh4:.

Lost the northern Vicus to those backstabbin germans... stupid german phalanx :furious3:. Shipping soldiers to Tingi, and finished taking back land lost to the gauls, so things are going fine. :2thumbsup:

11-30-2009, 05:25
Excellent!

Now the challenge is on. Who will complete a grand campaign first?

I've only ever completed one campaign in all my TW days...a short campaign with the Scipii. :shame:

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 05:26
Lol, campaign i'm playing is short. I'm probably going to continue it though once I win. I'm getting worried about Egypt though... everytime there's a largest faction pop-up it's them. :sweatdrop:

Flavius Julius
11-30-2009, 05:35
Kk, Tingi will be mine in 2 turns, just captured to german settlements, gonna be at war with britain soon. Probably going to ship some men over to Egypt to take their nile settlements. There riches will be mine. Gonna post more tomorrow.

pevergreen
11-30-2009, 05:37
(presumably) enjoy sleeping.

:laugh4:

Seems a long way to ship men in a combat that may not help you. Have you wiped out the Gauls? IIRC its them gone and 15 settlements for a Julii win?

HopAlongBunny
11-30-2009, 14:17
I agree with pevergreen

Finish off the Gauls and wrap up your victory conditions. Its been a long time since I played a campaign of RTW, but I think that finishing the short campaign opens up some factions (unless you edited the start files, in which case I guess finishing the short campaign doesn't matter) and opens up the Grand Campaign.

Wow! For a first run at RTW you are golden!!!

Have Fun~

pevergreen
11-30-2009, 23:30
Finishing the campaign gives you all the unlockable factions, wiping a faction out gets them playable, even if you don't finish (eg: Gaul got wiped out in a campaign, I can now play them)

Flavius Julius
12-01-2009, 01:23
Thanks for all the comments! Well, I got map info from gauls, and I saw one of their settlements was in spanish territory. Tingi seemed like a good base of operations to take it out, but those soldiers haven't landed yet, so i'll just send that stack on its way to accompany the 3 others in germany. :laugh4: Want me to post more screenies?

pevergreen
12-01-2009, 01:58
Sure! Its fun to look at Romans winning instead of doing work.

Flavius Julius
12-01-2009, 02:15
Well, my navy was totally wrecked in a battle, and there are only 23 ships left, and there are a couple other enemy navies in the area that look like they could easily take down my puny fleet that's holding my large army. Looks like I'm going to be skipping Tingi, but going for the gallic settlement in Spain. :beam:

New land in Europe though, and those settlements are calmy peaceful, even without a... forceful persuasion. :skull::whip:
Eastern european settlements
https://img339.imageshack.us/img339/1511/juliieasterneurope.th.png (https://img339.imageshack.us/i/juliieasterneurope.png/)
Western european settlements
https://img38.imageshack.us/img38/8743/juliiwesterneurope.th.png (https://img38.imageshack.us/i/juliiwesterneurope.png/)

Italian provinces remain untouched, thankfully. :laugh4: Tightening my grip on central europe, don't want to go to war with those chariot loving bararians the brits yet. :juggle2: Somehow, the african provinces are rebelling, even though my rule has only been... slightly harsh. Don't know how they can rebel, carthage has only about 4000 inhabitants. :whip:

Flavius Julius
12-01-2009, 03:36
I just won the campaign! :balloon2: Thanks for all the help guys. Never would have been able to do much without the help of those at the Org. Found their last settlemnt in spain. :inquisitive: At campaigns end I controlled a little of Africa, my provinces in Italy, and fragmented parts of europe. Lol, anyone have any idea what I should do next? :balloon2:

What type of faction do you like best? If you love the romans, try a harder difficulty (what were you playing) and go...I dunno.

Try the game modded, the Campaign and Battle AI are vastly improved in a lot of mods, and the game is expanded. For a less historical (but still good) mod, try Extended Greek Mod.

my favourite part is that the map is bigger. :2thumbsup:

However, a lot of mods reduce Rome to a single faction, so that may not be to your liking.

I personally love the vanilla game. (normal)

HopAlongBunny
12-01-2009, 05:53
I would try each of the Roman factions (if you like the Romans that is) For short campaign they each have a different set of goals and different challenges. In addition, they introduce you to pretty much the entire range of AI armies...you might see something you really like.

The mods for the game just make it better. Once you've done RTW to death load up EB or RTR and see the game anew.

Enjoy :2thumbsup:

Sorry Flavious to use your thread to aks my problem but I could not able to start new thread. BTW, can somebody tell me how to form the infentry or other unit in tight square block than long thin block?

Select your unit then right click and drag where you want them. The further you drag out the unit the thinner or thicker it can be.

Hmm, XGM is my favourite mod, but I wouldn't recommend it to beginners - XGM is a few degrees more complex and difficult than vanilla, especially vanilla Romans. In fact I wouldn't recommend trying out any major mods until you already have a few vanilla campaigns under your belt.

Cool, I did a few migration campaign as the Greeks, for example to Britain, or to Massilia... very fun to carve out a Hellenic kingdom in barbarian lands.

Parthia to Britan was a favourite of mine.

I don't play XGM anymore, I play Vanilla with the EB map.

I've only ever finished one Total War campaign. A short with the Scipii in 1.0

Lord Reid of Britannica, Many thanks for the solution of my problem. I tried it and working absolutly fine. Now I came to know that we can merge two units of same type for eg. Barberian Mercenaries unit of 60 can be merged with other Barberian Mercenaries unit of 30 to make a one Barberian Mercenaries unit of 90. May you help me to know how I can do that. In my current game as Scipii I have many mercenary units of same type and redused in man count. I want to merge them to create stronger unit. I am 25 yrs in game and controlling 23 settelments, Marius reform happened 6 turns back and I am the most Advance/Strongest faction in the game with treasury of 300 thousand +.
Thanks again for ur previous reply. Awaiting reply of this question.

Two merge two identical units, simply go to an army tab, single left click one unit, then drag and drop it onto the other unit you wish to combine it with. If the combined number will go over the unit cap (ie. 40 + 50, but unit cap is 80) then 80 will be in the one you dragged to, and 10 left in the one you clicked and dragged.
