I thought this was a screenshot competition, not demotivators. Isn't that a different thread? :laugh4:

Why not make a monthly demotivator competition. :smash:
Fluvius Camillus
12-02-2009, 21:52
Umm not meant as a dem, it has no black side with title and text and as image editing is allowed I thougth this was good.
Ill move it to the Demotivators if this isnt the right place.

Just throwing my two cents, but I think that as the screenshot competitions are more "serious" (In the loosest sense of the word) than the demotivator thread, we should go for awe-inspiring artistic vision and jaw-dropping aesthetics, rather than comedic dialogue.

Ouch! That must have hurt! Just kidding! I didn't realize editing was allowed. IIRC the 'traditional' (?) competitions had no cursor or UI, just a raw image of the battle scene in question.

Interesting that Thrakaioi are involved in that battle above. You playing as Romans I assume?
Ugh those Elite Liby-Phonecians are nasty though. I remember a silver chevroned unit of them withstood 4 Polybian Hastati and 3 Polybian Principes on a bridge battle when I was playing as Rome. Gave me a bad impression of Polybian units as it was the first time I used them and figured that brute force would win me the day. Same trap some other Roman commanders fell into isn't it?
Finn MacCumhail
12-03-2009, 21:04
Yep, I'm played SPQR, and you can really see Thrakaioi there. I thought they can deal with all that Carthage elites. Thrakaioi didn't helped a lot, though they show their best. I lost that battle. :embarassed: Sad but true.

Vartan, yes, but Hoplites do fight in a greek style Phalanx-Formation, while the "Phalangitai" you speak of fight in a makedonian style Phalanx-Formation, which is kind of an "update" of the older greek style Phalanx.

Here's my entry.
https://img9.imageshack.us/img9/682/angriffdurchdenuferschl.jpg
It's called "On the Banks of the Euphrates" and yes, it took place on the banks of the Euphrates. Seleukid elites try to storm the river bank that's held by the brave Makedonian Argyraspides. The ground is as slippy as at Granikos, therefore the foot-tankoi are easily held back by the Makedones. The spear in the center belongs to a Seleukid that's desperately trying to get back on his feet again.

Don't make me laugh too hard my friend, it hurts! Haha. But yes, you are right. In any case, as I speak mainly in English I'll just call them phalanxes as there isn't any other word we have. Thanks for the already-ubiquitous Greek word phalangitai :2thumbsup:
By the way, I vote for the fight on the banks of the Euphrates. Beautiful.

12-16-2009, 09:32
Ehm, what's up vartan. That's why I wrote "Phalangitai" in these " ", because 1. I have no better word for them too and 2. in EB the Macedonian-Style Phalangitai are called "Phalangitai" and the Greek-Style ones are called "Hoplitai" (who, however, still fight in a phalanx-formation).
The only thing that could make my answer THAT funny is the fact, that you edited your post (to which I answered in the first place) today, which makes my answer of course not appropriate anymore

The Hastati on the left who's looking at his foot kind of ruins it, but I think it looks cool still.
tbh I like it that that one chap looks at his foot rather than standing straight, it gives the pic a more human touch:beam:

I like the Hastatus who looks at his foot. There must have been many snakes in ancient Egypt ;-)
I always use phalanx for hoplites and Makedonian syntagma for phalangitai, as to not mixing them up.

https://img691.imageshack.us/img691/2333/casse.jpg
I hate to nitpick, but those are Eleutheroi, not Swêboz. The latter have unique skins for Germanic units, whereas other factions, like the SPQR, use the Eleutheroi ones.
Otherwise, an excellent picture.
Speaking of Romans, could some of you guys please cut out the anti-Roman/anti-whatever spam? It sucks.
Btw. "Romaioi" is plural only.
Skullheadhq
12-23-2009, 17:35
^
seconded, most of the greek fanboys don't seem to know Rhomaios is singular... a shame.
And to be even more grammatical correct, if you say: I kill a roman, or whatever it is ton Romaion for singular and tous romaious for plural.
and btw. A screenshot of a roman getting thrown in the air isn't spam :whip:
Would a picture of a gaul getting thrown in the air be spam then as well?
Oh, and a last thing, please, if you want to say something in greek, and didn't ever learn it, ask someone for grammar check first :)

Yeah it's an old picture and I couldn't really remember which battle it was from, but I assumed it was against the Sweboz based on the units. I guess it was against the Eleutheroi though. I don't think I'll change the name though, as "Breaking the Eleutheroi Battleline" doesn't have much of a ring to it.

Use the GNU Image Manipulation Program, usually referred to as simply, (the) GIMP. You can find it here (http://www.gimp.org/).

You don't even need GIMP. Just copy and paste it into paint.

The person in question needed easy cropping. Using GIMP, the person can crop much quicker and in far fewer steps than in MS Paint. Also, he or she should know that GIMP runs on many systems.

But at the same time, I don't see why anyone wouldn't use GIMP. It's completely free and it's a great program, giving you more options than paint does. It's not like it takes a long time to download or anything.
Centurio Nixalsverdrus
12-27-2009, 20:44
GIMP compared to Paint is like a fully automatic wood harvester machine compared to an axe. But if you just want to cut the low end of your christmas tree a bit so that it matches better with that thing in which it belongs, you choose the axe. You don't put your tree into that harvester machine for an action as simple as that.
That got longer and more complicated as I had planned. :sweatdrop:

I understand what you're saying, but if you already have GIMP there's really no reason to use paint to crop instead of GIMP. It's not like it takes more effort to crop in GIMP than it does in paint. But really, who cares, everyone should just use whichever program they prefer. It doesn't really matter.

Well then, that is a very valid reason not to use GIMP, I don't blame you at all haha
Don't really have a fancy name for this one, so I'm just using a quote instead:
A dog may be man's best friend, but the horse wrote history
And this time, the horse wrote "Murder, bloody murder"?
