Ok, i attempted to make a form of combustible material using mostly natural ingredients that would burn on water, here's what I used.
Some gum arabic
Some Potassium chloride
Some gasoline (sorry, couldn't find naptha or crude oil)
Some roof sealing tar
Some table salt
Some vegetable oil
This stuff does burn on water, though not on contact, I actually have to put a match to it to make it burn.
Any ideas on how this could work better and any idea of how close i am to the REAL greek fire?

ermm....even if you hadnt mixed the gasoline with al this stuff it would still burn on water if you light it with a match http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

no one knows how close you are because no-one knows what was in Greek fire
Even if you do succeed in making something that mimics Greeks fire we still won't know if you've got the same recipe as the ancients had
And if it doesn't burn on contact with then you're being a bit previous even claiming to be getting close.....the effects you have described work with gasoline alone
get some lithium that will burn on water

Send me the ingredients when you are finished, I want to recreate the siege of Constantinople by the Arabs in my bathtub.
WSince no one knows the exact ingredients of Greek Fire claim it as your own creation.

i can get it to burn on water if i remove the chloride from the potassium, but the ancients didn't have that, and anyway, greek fire has already been outmoded by a little thing known as the trident submarine launched ICBM.
