They bore shields of hard iron, when they marched against Roma, and wore armour like kings. They marched with the Indians, with their garments of cotton and their bows of reed, but even with the Indians they made but a tiny part of the host that Plato, the High King of Hellenes, had summoned forth from the recesses of his empire. For there were Indo-Greeks with beautiful arms and Bosphorans and Cretans with magnificent archer gear and Baktrians and Hellenes and Thessalians and Dahaeans and Scythians with noble horses. And there were Hyrkanians and Cappadocians with javelins burned hard at the point and Phrygians and Thraikians and Karians and Samnites and Galates with their weapons of their own.
Hello!
Once again I completed a campaign and I will share the details and bugs with you which I came across.
Please do not see this a world record attempt of conquering the world and also do not grab this topic as one where to discuss whether you should blitz or play slower. I blitzed quite some factions, but I also roleplayed, especially between wars. Also I watched the AI develop their empire and diplomacy.
1. My opinion on Baktria
This was a great campaign, it kept me going from the start till the end. After I conquered Italy it wasnt that fun anymore, but still, I couldnt stop there and it still was quite enjoyable. The faction has a great mix of troops and culture. The faction has so many features and I tried to participate in every bit. That the Baktrian Princess married to a S/C/V Diodotos gave me a lot of roleplaying oppertunities and his son Alexandros even more. Some sort of Philip II - Megas Alexandros father and son duo, where Alexandros became the Alexandros of the east! So much work has been put in this faction and I want to thank the team for it, when I came across the Indo-Greek Noble hoplite description it was surprisingly long and informative. I can keep on praising but I'll just say this was probably the campaign which I enjoyed the most. I was even more interested in Baktria than before, Thundering Zeus is on my bookshelft now!~D
2. The Story
Diodotos (Theodotos) I Baktrios was satrap of the Seleukids in Baktria, he was autonomous. He started by taking the settlements to the east, eventually he controlled quite an area (Baktra, Haomavarga, Kophen, Takshashila and Opiana). There was a conflict about the town of Alexandropolis with the Seleukid masters. Diodotos attacked took the town which the Seleukids wanted and the Seleukids declared war. Diodotos joined the war of Arshak the Elder against the Seleukids. At Alexandreia Aria the battle was fougth and Seleukos II Kallinikos was killed. Baktria became an independent kingdom in 255BC. When Diodotos Alexandreias Arias took Alexandreia Eschate from the Seleukids, they took the responsibility of the defending Hellenism against the Northern Saka. Diodotos I Baktrios now led some expeditions against Seleukid holdings in the far east and against Patala. After this campaign he dies, leaving the prosperous kingdom to his son Diodotos II Baktrios (248) BC, Diodotos II makes peace with Seleukids, who are fully occupied with Ptolemaioi and Pahlava. Baktria had Diodotos Alexandreias Arias battle the Sakas.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR1-1.jpg
The world - 247BC, 8 years after independence.
In 246 the Hayasdan also attack the Seleukids from multiple sides, but the Seleukids stay strong and survive the enemies approaching from all sides, they attack Baktria again and the Second war against them commences. Diodotus II has his army against the Saka in Chighu (Saka Capital) and gives Agothokles (his son) a medium sized army to counter the enemy. All wealth is now gathered to grant the very promising son of Diodotos Alexandreis Arias, Alexandros, a new royal army, to get rid of the Seleukid menace together with our faithful Parthian allies. The Pahlava are so happy that they are getting this much needed relief that they grant Sogdiane as thanks to the Baktrians. While the army is made, Diodotos Al. Ar. manages to destroy the last Sakae in 241BC. With most wealth drained, Alexandros Alexandreias Arias is ready to attack the Seleukids in 238BC.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR32.jpg
The map before the invasion (check the insane AI expansion of Pontos and my faithful brothers in arms)!
Alexandros defeats the supreme eastern commanders and Antiochos II Syriakos in 235BC at Hyrkania. At Ektabana and Mesopotamia the final eastern and royal armies of the Seleukids are destroyed, in 233BC the Baktrian Kingdom has grown and stand united with the Pahlava and Ptolemaioi against a weak Seleukid Empire.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR7-1.jpg
Antiochos II Theos (235BC)
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR33.jpg
Map at the heigth of the allies (233BC)
But the tide is turning, Ptolemaioi fear the rise of Baktrian power and the old Pahlavan King Arshak the Elder loses his sense and attacks their brothers in arms together with the Ptolemaioi, who also make peace with the Seleukids.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR8.jpg
The betrayal of the senile Shahrdar (233-232BC)
The betrayal was well planned, four cities are besieged right away. But Baktria wrestles free, Pahlavan forces are beaten, including Arshak's royal army (who himself escapes and hides). Ptolemaioi are defeated on the Tigris and eventually Baktria starts devouring the Pahlavans, while Alexandros fights hard in the Assyrian desert against the Ptolemaioi and Seleukids. During the war Diodotos II Baktrios (229BC) dies and is followed by Diodotos III Alexandreis Arias (heir Alexandros). This Basileus finally finds the Pahlavan madman and kills him (Pahalava reduced to nomads.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR9.jpg
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR10.jpg[/IMG]
The madman is finally found by the Basileus, littering around.
At 227BC Alexandros breaks through Assyria and at the same time the Pahlavans are destroyed, VC ACHIEVED!
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR11.jpg
Then it all goes fast, the Levant is overrun and the Seleukids left alone for a while, who then feast on Hayasdan. Pontos gets thrown out of Hellas and I come across another person from history.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR12-1.jpg
The war against the two Diadochi lasts for some time but in 217 the Seleukids cease to exist, Baktria also issues new heavier bodyguards. At 215BC Diodotos III Al. Ar. dies and Alexandros becomes Basileus (heir Menandros Baktrios) The Ptolemaioi are destroyed at Ammonnion by Alexandros, Idalieus VI Ptolemaeus is killed and Alexandros Al. Ar. proclaimed son of Ra and rightful heir of Megas Alexandros. In reaction, the Red Sea trading kingdom of the Sab'yn declare war and are defeated at Alexandreia. Also Qarthadast attack and Alexandros is forced to continue his campaign in the direction of Lybia. Romani destroy Aedui and Apollodotos Baktrios is placed at the head of a new army with destination: Maryab.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR13.jpg
World 212BC
From the destruction of Seleukids, no war has been waged near Anatolia, Makedonia and Pontos + Hayasdan and Sauromatae wage a balanced war, not daring to attack Baktria. In 202Bc both Qarthadast and Sab'yn are destroyed, Iberian coast settlements raided by Alexandros and returned to the Lusotana.
Two years after total peace, Hayasdan attack Baktria in 200BC, after 17 years of peace in Anatolia and Caucasus, war begins again. A year after, the Caucasus tension also has Baktria try to stop the endless killing between Makedonians and Ponts in Anatolia. They decide to attack the stronger of the two, Makedonia. But Pontos attacks the Baktrians right after the start. In the Battle of Nikaia Plato Al. Ar. wins a hard but herioc victory on the greatest Pontic General/King. 197BC is the end of Pontos. After the Makedonian King and son and their Anatolian holdings are defeated, the First Makedonian war ends. At the battle of Mtshketha the son of Alexandros, Antialkidas, defeats the Hayasdan cataphracts, whom almost defeated him.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR14.jpg
Now is the end of the smaller wars, the Sauromatae attack Baktria and the massive Hellene Kingdom sides with them (former Baktrian ally). In the year 193BC the massive Second great Hellenic War begins. Hayasdan destroyed the same year. The Hellene war starts on sea, the Hellenes hold the upper hand but eventually Baktria wins by capturing Rhodes and destroying the Hellene fleet at Sinope. Hellene grand fleet defeated in 192BC - Sea of Marmara. Apollodotos has to evade the Sarmatian Royal Army, he is heavily outnumbered. Makedonia destroyed. Plato Al. Ar. and Menandros Baktrios attack the Koinon. Second siege of Gelonus starts in 190BC, at 188 falls Gelonus and Sauromatae are destroyed. The next year Alexandros I Al. Ar. dies, followed by Menandros. Heir: Plato Al. Ar.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR17.jpg
184BC - Koinon destroyed - Menandros Baktrios is declared High King of Hellenes at Delphi.
181BC - Cold phase of the Roman vs Hellen War starts. 180 Bc the war really starts, Plato Al.Ar. fights himself up the Italian peninsula from Sicily, Pantaleon Baktrios fights from Taras and Demetrios Baktrios advances from Vindobona. Menandros and Arsakes Al.Ar. fight in the north versus Baltic savages and Suebi. Legions are raised and defeated, then only vigiles are thrown in which lead to spectacular effects at Segesta.
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR25.jpg
Vigiles are no soldiers - 177BC - Segesta.
Also a nice Augustus is found at Gergovia:
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR26.jpg
In 172BC the Northern seas are finally reached by Pantaleon, in the east begins the Yuezhi invastion! In 169BC two enourmous battles near Chighu end the panic in the East. 168 Suebi die.
The following period is just killing the Middle European wild men and the enemies in Iberia. 163BC Menandros dies (age 75!) and is followed by Plato Al. Ar. who declares himself emperor of Hellenes after defeating Lusotannan and Romani. He dies soon after, followed by Demetrios Baktrios (heir: Pantaleon Baktrios).
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR29.jpg
Finally the Casse are subdued and Hibernian rebels defeated, in the end, there was no more hope for them:
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR30.jpg
I also destroyed two pirate ship full stacks near Rhodos (the ships came all the way from the Baltic), with defeating them in 156BC, my campaign was done!
THE END!
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR31.jpg
What will the future hold?
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR43.jpg
3.a Bugs
- In Meroe I built high level local barracks, which promised me Ethiopian Cavalry, it said it was available but they never popped up in the recruitment section.
- Dunaminaca animation fail when throwing javelins:
https://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/Fluvius_Camillus/AAR28.jpg
3.b Weird stuff
- Most Hellenic poleis are expansion regions, from the far east to Syracuse, strange enough, Korinth is an outlying region.
- DTerhazzaikos was a common name, probably derived from the unconquerable town, this has been mentioned before by Centurio Nixalverdrus, so I'll just confirm here, that family caused no problems though.
- The weird Roman barrack victory building is always present at Tuat, I know that but now I also found it at Attuaca (Calydrae), is this normal?
i only had around 12 CTD's without any reason (going to the loading screen quickly after a battle etc.), so it was very stable!
Thanks for reading and thanks for this great mod!
