Something you mafia players might wanna watch...

...And so, I'm meant to be doing course work for uni but i was taking a break whilst eating. bored whilst eating, i'd thought i'd have a look around on what i can watch and I came across the anime Death Note...


... And OMG, this is on another level, nothing i've seen before. This isn't your typical japanese anime/cartoon with "cute" characters with big boobs coupled with comedy, but this is serious stuff (with normal proportioned people and the art is excellent). I won't ruin the story, but its goes something like this:

A Genius one day picks up a "Death Note" which gives him power to kill people. He decides to use it on criminals to make a perfect world. However due to the sudden death of lots of criminals, police enlist a mysterious person called "L" to help them. They both vow to bring the other to justice. The story then goes on with a mafia game feel - the two geniuses play a lot of reverse psychology and testing each other, out-witting each other and there's so much more WIFOM than sasaki can put forward.

I wont go any further, but I seriously recommend this. I usually don't post stuff like this but Death Note has definitely grabbed my attention as a mafia player - i've just done a 10 episode marathon :laugh4:

have a look around and give it a try up to ep 3, there's places where you can watch this online or even download.....

but yea, i would make an excellent mafia game - i'm just watching it now and everytime they play mafia between the two, it gettings me thinking exactly the same things lol

We've been tossing the idea around for a while, but can't get the mechanics to work. No matter how you make it, be it a mafia game or something else, it gets kind of hard to balance things when everybody has a suspicion of who the villain is from the start and he can kill you all almost instantly. :laugh4: Now that it's academic crunch time (speaking of which, why am I on the forums right now), we haven't been thinking about it much.

-edit- As for the links, I'm going to err on the side of caution for this one and remove them. For you Americans, Cartoon Network airs it, or at least it did during the summer. Not sure about anywhere else.

I agree this is a wonderful Anime, one of the best I've seen so far.

Another suggestion is "Liar Game" though its havn't turned into an anime yet.

That reminds me of "Death note" more then any other mafia game on the org., so far.....I mean Reenk was claiming "Detective" in the face of the unsupassed "Holmes" and almost got away with it....~:shock:

I just finished ep 20 on my mini marathon and the first part is definitely very very exciting. the middle part im on atm is a bit less exciting but i hear the last part is awesome?

Manga had a few more interesting developments.. Anime was... pretty.

Yes, an excellent show, though it can be a bit silly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaoy1QKxGQs) at times.

Its probably been about 8 months or so that GH and I have batted the idea around, but it never got more than conceptual. Partly because of the difficulty GH explained, and also out of trying to be faithful to the show. It would take a combination of great attention to detail by to detail by the host as well as great performances by the respective pro-town and "pro-Light" forces.

Overall, I'm a bit unsure right now about how good a mafia game could be made of it while still doing proper tribute to the show. :shrug:

Large game

Game starts right after Light and Misa meets

Players can post a letter on public

Characters
Pro Kira
Yagami Light- Kira. Starts with a death note. Know Misa. Be the last one alive but Misa can live
Misa- Starts with a death note. Knows Light. Be the last one alive with Light. If he does, she dies as well

Pro L
L- Detective. Cannot die as long as Watari lives. Knows Watari
Watari- Mason. Knows L

Japanese Investigation Group- L supporter
Yagami Souichirou- Mason
Matsuda Touta- Neutral
Mogi Kanzo
Aizawa Syuichi

If they are found by L, they get 1 investigation per night as long as they have more then 2 men alive

L supporter
Aim is to burn the Death note and lynch Kira

Kira supporter
Aim is to become the Serial Killer and lynch L

If Death note dies, L supporters gets a victory
If not, Kira supporter wins a minor victory

Deathnote Ability
- Can kill (x number of death note)
- Can give it to others
- If one gets lynched, Death note will go to random person who has voted for that player
- If one gets killed, Death note will go to the killer
-Can be destroyed/ burned

Doing the eye deal taking half the life span doesn't get reflected on the game. So I'm not sure how we can use real names.

Just use player names with character settings, that should work I think.

Well-well, I certainly hadn't expected a topic on this.

My opinion on Death Note changed quite a bit as I was watching it. It began wonderfully - Light's laugher, L's logic, the suspicion and competition between the two. I'm currently being urged by several people to read the manga, as well as some of the novels, but I don't think I have time just yet.

I do have a few problems with the show, though, mostly the ending:
First of all, L dying was awful. The whole show was based on Light vs L, replacing him with N and M just didn't keep me as interested. Neither did N's simplistic way of solving problems (let's not mention M...) bring much - Light was obviously far more intelligent, and was defeated purely due to lack of resources.

None the less, I for a long time felt Death Note was the second best anime I watched (Full Metal Alchemist being somewhat better, imho). Now, those two have moved down one rank, making room for Code Geass - which may, too, be of interest, if it's the combat between two highly intelligent characters that you want.

Nope. He has someone with shinigami eyes look at N and write the name down, but the notebook turns out to be a fake. Then Light goes nuts and Ryuk kills him. Misa, as far as I could understand, commits suicide.

It was supposed to end with Ls death. But being a manga on Shonen Jump where the rule of it is "Friendship, Hard work and Victory" they didn't allow the writer to end it with baddies winning. So he was forced to add N and M who was both inferior to L. While I was hoping for Light dying at the end, I didn't want it to end with that guy (Jovanni?)s uber hacking skill, copying the entire book on one night.

I liked the ending sequence though.. Very emotional.

Not really. He lost because his servant screwed up in a silly manner. Light's plan was perfect, which makes the ending even more unappealing to me - on the same level as Light being hit by a truck.
As to the writer not being allowed to end the story however he wanted to - that's why I tend to hate publishers. We need more books that end in unexpected ways. Metro 2033, The Rats in the Walls, The Black Cat...
