If you had a choice, in which EB unit would you serve? [Archive]

Ok, let’s imagine that you are usual solder in EB 1.2. And you are commanded by AI. So in which military unit would you serve? Here is the question not like what is your favorite unit, that you like to spam and send to death, but where would serve YOU? Here counts everything – safety, salary, prestige, skin and so on. I wouldn’t like to be general bodyguard, as AI usually sends them into kamikadze assault. So you would have bright but short live. May be then naked celt? Hm… it would be cold in winter. Also lack of armor, again short but remarkable live. After second thought I stoped on Indian armoured elephants. Good salary, safe, exotic, scarry.

And what do you think?

And you'll get a lot of loving attention from peltasts. Not to mention the occasional katapeltes bolt crossing your mind...

Me, I'd rather like to be a legionary. Being backed up by reliable and well disciplined buddies increases your life expectancy. Sabaean Citizen Cavalry would also be a cool idea. Or, to be closer to home, Germanic heavy cav.

Commanded by the AI? Maybe Silver Band (foot version) since AI Carthage rarely moves troops from Africa, and elite infantry at that level have a pretty good survival rate.

Of course, eventually the AI would find a reason to let my unit get surrounding by some kind of armor piercing unit and have me killed off, but it would be fun for a while.

Silver band? They must be awesome!:laugh4: I guess you mean the sacred band. But given that unit's history, i really dunno why you wuold wanna serve with them. IMHO the best unit would be being a part of an Cavalry force like the Cataprachts...

I would serve in the Tarabostes unit (Thracian Medium Cavalry).
1)In battles, we would guard the rear of our armies, and we will have a huge role.

2)Also, I would like to fight mounted and to be in a fast moving unit, who can be very maneuverable on the battlefield, and can chase running enemies if ordered to do so.
I imagine we will receive the order to chase and take prisoner an enemy ruler. I think that if we’ll succeed, we will be greatly rewarded.

3)Being attached to the Getic nobility I will have better equipment than my fellow Getic warriors, and I will also be rewarded by my chief not by bureaucracy.

4)In times of peace, my troops will be the enforcers in an entire “dava” , we will help our chief to rule the dava.
Our salary may be a lot higher than average, it depends of our chief’s wealth and position.

5)And about safety….it isn’t very safe to fight as tarabostes companion because you will have to do a lot of charges but there are units who take higher risks on the battlefield.

But, sometimes there could be a problem, when my chief betrays Sarmiszegethusa or the Getic Basileos, and we could have the unpleasent possibility to fight against our getic zalmoxian brothers.

If I was forced to serve for the AI - which is suicide ^^ - I would serve as a diplomat *GG*
No, seriously, of course you think of soldiers, hm.

In early times I would like to serve as a Triarius. Why? Because:

1. I've got good armour
2. I can defend myself even against heavy cavalry and am the nightmare of many foot-soldiers
3. My faction is quite wealthy and can afford strong armies, which increaes my chance of surviving
4. Theoretically I'm fighting in the thrid battleline, and while the Hatati get slaughtered and the Principes are cleaning up, I only have to protect some flanks, cover eventual retreats or in state of emergency slaughter the already decimated and tired enemy.

In later times I would fight in the Cohors Praetoriana OR for Carthage as one of the Dorkei Hatkafa. These Iberian Assault Infantrists are quite strong and are even able to survive city-tower-firepower.

They're the little known companion unit to the Sacred band. Yeah, that's it. :clown:

They seem to last a long time under AI command, while cavalry is incredibly suicidal. Actually, so is AI led infantry, but they last longer while completely surrounded. :sweatdrop:

Actually, that could probably be said for the vast majority of soldiers in the pre-modern era. Nothing special. The mere fact that they are archers and away from the close-fighting does make them appealing...

More like, ritually killed to accompany him in the afterlife. At least in some mounted bodyguard units (check the description of the Katuvaram). Not the kind of career I'd choose...

And even if your nation is more civilized than the Lusotannan, chances are that you get killed or murdered in some dynastic infighting, which was not uncommon among factions like AS or Pahlava.

If commanded by the AI, then it's the guys operating the Katapeltai.

Modus operandi:

-Shoot from distance,
-get quick support in case the enemy comes close,
-fall back when out of ammo,
-first to withdraw when things go wrong,
-get back to camp to float a boat in wine as promised before the battle.

If it's a siege:
-I may be even (relatively) contributing so when the infantry takes the city we march in as conquerors and we might even get a beautiful hetaira instead of the usual ugly ones.

I'd rather serve as Aeldry Aezamblade, because getting near with rich Sauromatae chief, having a bow to pepper the enemy from afar, and very heavily armoured to just shrug off most missiles.... that's a good life as nomads! (BTW, if I want more heroic one, I'd choose Griphanvar)

Yep, an idea of Elephant Master is not so good. Then horse archer. Foot archers suffer from friendly fire a lot. Especially when they stand 4 in line, and the enemy tries to flank you, there is a great chance to catch an arrow from the solder behind you.

This is a hard question,

I would be a Misthophoroi Toxotai Kretikoi. The reasons?

- I'm the most wanted merceneray in the whole Mediterranean
- I can punish medium infantry with my short sword if they dare to come closer
- My employers usually keep me protected... that means if the things turn bad, I have a good chance to survive the battle
- I'm one of the best archer in the world
- My payment is quite high compared to the others
- I have a good chance to see new "worlds" as my employers buy my services for long terms usually

I would serve as a Peltastai Makedonikoi. Taking fortresses, killing elephants, flanking phalanxes, always in the thick of the fighting!

Otherwise as a Dacian Elite archer. Ambush people, kill with bows, then move in with big celtic choppa!

Serving as a diplomat is not a good idea. IRL for bad news you would be killed by your own master or by the enemy just for lulz. Also they had no respect in Roman and Greek world, coz they knew barbarian languages. And don't forget assassins, who would kill you for experience.

Why there is no one who would like to be a ship? I mean not the slave who operate the ship, but warrior on it. Or artillery servant?

only if they're on my way. And, let's forget the society we're in now, and let's imagine we're in 270 BC, , cannibalism was not considered as a crime against humanity, but as a ritual by many people. So if I put myself in the skin of one of those Worgozez, who believe in it as a ritual, the answer is, probably, yes, I'd do it. :whip:

And for the answer of your ship... maybe because on auto-calc your ship have 1 chance on a million to survive against the ******* boats stack of pirates! i don't know in the south, but in the north they're like always stacks (yes yes, plural!) of 7 ships and more! once i swa a stack of 13 ships... hurray for the money boost!

Well, the question was what you want to be in EB, not IRL. But you're right, Assassins are dangerous for diplomats.

Ship is not a good idea. I don't like to drown.

Who would you want to be, if you really were part of the game - and could die there. Well, of course no light fodder-infantrist. I think a good point was to be a casse-warrior. You will never have to fight the badasses of great cultures outside britain ;-)

I want to be part of the garrison of that tiny little island in the Baltic, just off the east coast of Scandinavia, that the Sweboz and Sauromatae can't reach because they can't be bothered to build ships, and too distant for anyone else to bother with. I think the predecessors of the Geats live there (the tribe that Beowulf comes from in the far distant future.)

It's a quiet, easy life! Unless I want to join the crew of a pirate ship. But since only pirate ships bother with the Baltic, even then I'm in no danger - just sacking coastal fishing villages. What fun.

Never ever would I want to serve under the AI. Any position is suicide in an AI army. But seriously, here I give you some ideas:

Pantodapoi. In this unit, death normally comes without much ado. Also you have so many comrades that the player sometimes does not manage to kill all of you. Perhaps you are the lucky one? Survival chance: 0,5%
A really light cavalry force, like Dahae riders. After the inevitable suicide charge, you're unit's gonna rout extremely quickly, which means that a lot of you will survive. The players cavalry is often to heavy to catch all of you. Survival chance: 5%
Elephantes Kataphraktoi Indikoi. Perhaps you'll die, but you're so powerful that even the player will have difficulties to kill you. Survival chance: 5 - 15%
A triple silver or gold chevroned Solduros in the Kingdom of the Lugii or the people in the eastern baltics. No one ever get's there. Never. If you face a player army, you're death is certain though. Survival chance: 1% if somebody really decides to invade
Skandzawarjoz (the Scandinavian variant of Dugunthiz). This unit is so seldomly recruited by the AI that it pretty certain you will never be forced to fight. Survival chance: 0,5% IF you are drawn.

Hm... Duguntz said right about 270 BC, other culture other rules and ideas what is right or wrong. The same thing would be about Spartans. If nothing prevents you to eat people or to having homosexual acts except public opinion, why not? We are living only once! Just kidding.

To be a garrison is not a good idea. During the siege solders die (i mean the siege itself, not the battle), and it could be even you. Also who sow AI retraining troops? (May be on EB on Alex.exe yes)

May be being a heavy peltast standing on the bridge with phalanx is a good idea? You will not melee, but throwing javelins, and phalanx would hold the enemy on the bridge. If you loosing, you could hide in the forest or long grass, as your unit is not captains' of course.
