For the purposes of trying to match the games initial political set up with the historical reality of the War of Spanish Succession and the Great Northern War, what Electorate or Electorates is Westphalia in the game supposed to represent? For example, the city of Cologne (capital of in game Westphalia) was its own entity (which aligned with Austria), separate from the Electorate of Cologne (which aligned with France).

Westphalia doesn't fit in. Whilst Hanover, Bavaria, Wurttemberg and Saxony were definite regional powers, ETW's Westphalia more or less represents the area in general, rather than any kind of political entity. You may very well assume it to be be neutral, as it doesn't make much sense to assume it to be a unified state in the first place.

The State in the game know as Westphalia is only an expedient of many small states that existed at the time.

The only states worth mentioning during 1700 are Bavaria, Brandenburg(and Prussia),Bremen, Hanover, Mecklenburg, and Saxony. Swedish Pomerania was much larger than any of the small states, though it is a part of Brandenburg in the game.

There were so many I don’t think you could find a list of them all. On any map you find they are simply called small states and this was most of what is today Germany.

The country in the game encompasses about 5 or 6 of today’s German States and there was nothing unified about the area at the time. The same holds true for Württemberg.

Before the game came out I was looking at some maps of these. Some were Church Lands and some belonged to Counts and so on. They were a jumble and often not contiguous.

The smallest state I found was a place called Nußbaum which translates to Nut Tree. I was hoping to play the state of Wolfegg...

At least the Graf was an elector.

So what I am thinking, since the ruler of Westphalia in the game is Joseph Clemens I (who as elector of Cologne with France and Bavaria), Westphalia should break its alliance with Wuttemburg and align with France and Bavaria instead. The other question in my mind is whether Bavaria and Westphalia should retain their alliance with Austria as well (since they were still Holy Roman Electorates and owed at least little nominal allegience to the Hapsburgs).

Other changes I am thinking of making:

Prussia and Austria Allied and normalized slightly (Prussia owed Austria for letting the Prussian elector delcare himself king, and sided with Austria against France in 1703)

Hannover and Austria Allied (Hannover joined the war against France in 1703)

Prussia vs. Poland-Lithuania and Saxony normalized (Prussia sided briefly with Poland against Sweden)

Austria and Poland-Lithuania normalized slightly (Austria was not involved against Poland at all during the first few decades of the 18th century.

Iroquois normalized slightly vs the Thirteen Colonies and Great Britain (to avoid Iroqois always ending up in a war with 13 Colonies and Great Britain).

UP normalized against Spain and Westphalia (to reduce the chances of UP starting a war in Europe on the first couple of turns).

Other things I am considering:

Changing Saxony from a protectorate to an ally of Poland.

Improving Denmark's relations with Great Britain and Austria, and souring them against France (Denmark briefly entered the War of Spanish Succession on Austrian side).
