Alternate Attack

May sound like a total noob asking this but... How do you switch soldiers onto their alternate attack method?

I'm playing as Parthia, and my Persian Cav would be much more useful as light cavalry during seiges with their swords, but i can't get them to attack. They just sit there spraying arrows at them when i need a decisive cavalry charge, help would be much appreciated.

Simply press Alt and right click.

Hi Lord Reid.

Toggle Skirmish Mode on/off with "S". Or hold down "ALT" when you click to attack an enemy Unit (IIRC "ALT" makes them Skirmish the clicked on enemy and return to Ranged when it dies).

Thanks for your answers but that hasn't seemed to work. I've turned off skirmish mode and they still merely attack at range. They keep doing it until they run out of arrows and the didnt even engage when they were attacked, they just kept shooting at point blank... it lost me the seige battle.

Just take skirmish mode off (either by pressing the button or by pressing the s key that is the shortcut iirc), and then keep alt pressed and then right click attack to the unit you want them to engage. Tried and tested (in all TWrs).

It also works for phalanxes to attack with their swords and for cavalry to attack with their secondary weapons. This is particularly useful for Cataphracts that are equipped with armor piercing maces and do lots more damage this way than with their spears.

Yup, just hold alt and right click. That will make them use swords. Useful for a flank charge from archers.
