Hello,

When I first start up my computer, I am not able to connect to the internet (via a plugged in modem). If I restart my computer, my internet works.

This will happen anytime of the day. If my computer is not on for a few hours, it is guaranteed the first time I start up I will not be able to connect. When I restart my compute, my internet works fine.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Hmm, what sort of modem are we talking about? Cable modem, phone modem, what? And is it run through a router, or straight into your PC?

It sounds like your modem needs some time to wake up.
Is there an LED that indicates the state of the modem?

I guess its a cable modem straight into my PC.

I am in a large living complex and this problem does not happen to anyone else that I know of.

It also happens when I use different cable modems at different locations, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

There is a small light right next to the jack spot on my computer. There is currently two lights, one is green and one is blinking yellow. Is this what you mean?

Thanks for the responses,

Hiji

Okay, let's get a teensey-weensey bit more specific. If you have blinking lights by the port, I'm guessing you're connecting through the ethernet port (http://www.ust.hk/itsc/classroom/notebook/photo/notebook_network_port.jpg), correct?

First thing to do is call the support line for your cable company and go through the script with one of their Hindustani helpers. Since your setup is so simple (one modem, one computer, no router) it's likely they will be able to fix it immediately.

If that doesn't work, at least you will have eliminated the cable modem/cable company/basic network settings as a culprit.

So call the support line, do what they say, and please report back to us if we can help further.
