Disc-Printing Machines

Wifey* is interested in something like THIS (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10361356&listingid=29636268) Epson rig, which claims to print/etch full-color images onto pre-burnt discs. I guess we've come a long way since the olden times when we put printed sticky labels on discs - only to discover that the glue messed with the data integrity of the disc.

Anyone have experience with these newer generation printers?

*Wifey's goal is to make home movies copies, and put the "star" (usually, the Grandson)'s face on the disc

They work fine. You buy special printable media for them and the results are good.
But the one you link to seems overly expensive to me. I bought a Canon Pixma 4600 for about 100€. And that was years ago. I just checked, and the current model is about 90€. The thing is, that the real money will eventually go into ink cartridge replacements. One load (up to 5-6) cartridges can cost you 80-100 €, if you get the original ones. Third party replacement may not work so well on special media like printable CDs. So, spending that much money already on the hardware when the main cost will be ink may not be the best choice if it's "just" a fancy.

I had such an inkjet some years ago, and I can tell you that it was flaky, prone to breakdowns, and expensive to run. It was also an Epson.

If I had to do it again, I would get a dedicated monochrome disc printer like this (http://reviews.cnet.com/printers/teac-p-11-cd/4505-3155_7-31642820.html?tag=mncol;lst). Of course you need color for kid pikkies, so I would consider a dedicated printer like this (http://www.amazon.com/Dymo-DiscPainter-Color-Printer-1738260/dp/B000OSLHFK).

Trust me, until you've spent an hour trying to align that gah-darned tray that Epson includes with its "disc" printers, you haven't had fun.
