hi all.
it is just a foolish question, but:
i just arrived at matrian reform (using the 'setting reforms to your preference ' :embarassed: )
and -as i am sure you know - suddenly the barracks in italy seem to be not important: you get everywhere legionaries.
but, moreover, i don't see a place - even in the provinces - where to recuit cavalry, spearmen, and missile.
how to deal with this?
where/how recruit those units?
thanks

? I always could (in the one game where I got the reforms). I suspect it has to do with your MICs and Gov Forms there.
you can start recruiting spear auxilia during the augustan reform. before that , you'll have to use spearmen from regionnal mic .I use the galatian heavy spearmen from tylis or the helveti spearmen from aventicos
As for cavalry. Make normal barracks in gaul for gallic cavalry auxillia, barracks in iberia for iberian cav. auxillia, barracks in germany for the germanic ones and barracks in thrace for the thracian ones.
also, i always make a lvl IV city in mediolanum for brihentin cavalry ( gallic noble cavalry) and neitos
forgot to talk about missile. always use celtic slingers. always. use peltastai or normal akonstai (sp?) as jav missiles. both can be recruited in southern italy with regionnal lvl 2
also, you can use hoplitai as spearmen infantry (they are all over the place ) and only need a lvl 3 regionnal mic

thanx arutima.
when you say ' lvl IV city' and ' lvl 3 ' , you mean level of romanisation, correct?

No, he was referring to the barracks level when using the Indian numbers. The Latin numbers refer to the type of government. You can get level 2 regional barracks (the ones that give you non-Roman troops) with a Type I government.

thank athanaric. but when you say type I government, you mean it in the italian peninsula, isn't it? because in all the others it is possible only II-IV.
make a type I gouvernment in taras then make a lvl 2 regional MIC there and you'll get some javelin units

Konny's thread on roman and regional units and recruitment; ctrl F "marian reforms", you should have a map showing where and with which gov you can recruit cavalry.

I am deeply sorry to burst your bubble, but...it is not a foolish question. =]
I am happy you asked, cause I did not know about the way Roman barracks worked.

thanks as well. that page is very helpful.
but:
i found something quite interesting.
when i get marian reform, then all the same type of troops are nearly available in all italy.
moreover, then local 'national' MIC building results damaged 100%.
well, if i restore the damaged MIC building, then i get back the chance to enroll all the old-type units, i.e. triarii, italian cavalry, extraordinarii and so on .
what do you think about it? is there anything wrong?
No, it's just that the EB script cannot remove buildings. They are damaged to 99% to make clear that you should destroy them.

yes. but i can repare the buildings and still enroll old-style troops, isn't it? in this way i can have still triarii, extraordinarii, and cavalry

Phail. Destroy the buildings and play historically. It's time to wake up, smell the coffee, and reform!

Yes, but's an exploit, really. The barracks ought to be destroyed: it's just that there is no way to tell the engine to do so. The player has to do it.

Well how much does repairing them 99% cost you each turn? I never thought of it before but it could be useful for keeping your gold supply low, and so your characters honest can't it?
