I use word, and it saves fine for me.

it seems to save them as a adf text file is this right or wrong ?

No, that is perfectlly fine, it has to be in ADF anyways, and the other in BDF.

if you go to http://doragon.cjb.net
then go to any of the medieval mirrors,
then go to the demo section and read the modding guide

NOW
you can save each page of that guide,
make a new folder,
use the default file names when saving,
save the file as webpage complete,
and all the pages will still link to each other pon your hard drive,

I know that guide is for the demo, but the basic rules outlined in the adf and bdf sections still apply to the full version for creating custom battles.

ALSO read through the adf and bdf files in the current array of historical battles and the 3 available from the historical battles downloads page here at the org.
http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/MTW/Battle_H.shtml

Then simply start by altering a couple of the avaialble battles and work your way to a unique creation from there.
