View Full Version : New unit/faction ideas
RICHARD III

-Roman Rebel faction should exist- Pompeii/Ceasar civil war?
-Sabean/ Mercinary Naptha unit- like naffatun in M2TW
-Mauryan Empire (India) with all the indian units- longbowmen, spearmen, elephants etc
-Separate Illlyrian faction, with a mix of hoplite/ barbarian units
-"Italic" factions e.g. samnium, etruscans
I hate to break it to ya but most of these ideas have been posted before and convincingly argued against. And what evidence is there for the Sabeans using incendery weapons like naptha?
Woah woah people, abandon your years of research in making EB and any understanding of how the RTW Engine works, here's a guy who has cobbled together a few ideas out of pseudo-history and the realm of impossibility. Let's all listen to him.

Good day fellow EB-fans, good day dear Richard III!
As you see quite obviously, the reactions to your suggestions aren't what in general would be called "positive" and maybe you are confused now, why since you came up with some ideas, tht would - in your opinion - improve the gameplay and fun.
But maybe you should read the FAQ first, as stated by Cue Wolf, and keep in mind that the EB team strives for historical accuracy. That means, that for every unit and evrery faction must be some historical evidences from the EB Timeframe (272bc-14ad), before the implement them in the game. Plus: EB is finished the team is working on EBII now.
:)
The main problem with your suggestion is that RTW (on which EB is based) cannot have any more factions, EB2 which is being made for M2TW:K can and will have more but it isn't possible for EB.
-Roman Rebel faction should exist- Pompeii/Ceasar civil war?
The team decided against this as it is a waste of a faction slot (you cannot play rebel factions), also the romans were not the only people to experience rebellions so you would need to have rebel factions for most factions which takes up even more faction slots with unplayable factions
-Sabean/ Mercinary Naptha unit- like naffatun in M2TW
Is there any evidence that the Sabeans used such a unit?, did such a unit even exist during EB's time period? EB strives to be as realistic as possible so there needs to be good evidence for a units existance as opposed to just being a cool idea before it will go into the game.
-Mauryan Empire (India) with all the indian units- longbowmen, spearmen, elephants etc
The vast majority of the Mauryan empire as well as its centers of power were well beyond the eastern edge of the map, as the map cannot be made bigger (there is a limit on how many provinces you can have) it would be unrealistic to include them.
-Separate Illlyrian faction, with a mix of hoplite/ barbarian units
This could be possible for EB2 as the team has not revealed all the new factions yet.
-"Italic" factions e.g. samnium, etruscans
Both the Samnites and Etruscans were conquered by rome before the start date and so if included would be unhistorical, the others were pretty weak , didn't do much and were conquered by rome pretty soon after the start date.
Richard III, welcome to EB and to the .Org ~ .
Guys go easy on him, its his first post.
I'll repeat this for emphasis. It's his first post: he doesn't know as well as we do what EB is about.
I had to read this thread just to see what everyone would say. I was not disappointed.
Although it was his first post, it sadly also seems to have been his last post. You guys can be kinda scary sometimes to the uninitiated.

First post does not mean first visit to this forum or first time to learn about EB...
Though, I have nothing against his ideas. :idea2:

The internet is indeed a cruel and unforgiving place...
on a lighter note i'ld like to ask sth. Bobbin said that you can't "play rebel factions" ... hmmmmm, surely this can't be true right ??? In RTW you could tinker with the files and make Rebels playable. I have actually played 2 full rounds of Eleutheroi at RTW before becoming utterly tired of losing provinces, losing battles, losing money, managing tenths of settlements and commanding inferior troops. And i have seen some guys here proudly showcasing their "Eleutheroi" banners... i imagine it must be an incredible challenge (and highly time consuming) ...
By rebel factions I mean the shadow factions mechanic you got in Barbarian Invasions which is what Richard the III was talking about. These are factions that emerge when a set faction's cities revolt, for example in BI when one of the eastern roman empire cities revolted it would revolt to the eastern roman empire rebels faction, if the eastern roman empire rebel faction didn't exist at the time it would emerge in the revolting city.
The problem is that you can't play them unless they already exist at the start of the game, which would be unhistorical and that they take up an extra faction slot. To be historical you would need rebel factions for most if not all the factions which is not possible.

First Post does not necessarily has to include many tips and tricks how to make everything better. He did not ask any questions, he did not say "hello everyone, I'm new to the Forum", he just listed up what he thinks would make EB "better". First Post = last Post? So be it

You can play as the Eleutheroi and win. Your best chances exist on the British isles, Germania and the empty part of Europe, the Steppe, and Arabia. Everwhere else, you really should just hide.

But frankly why would you want to do that instead of playing as Casse or Sweboz or Saba ??? To me "eleutheroi" sounds like playing as Arche Seleukeia on a grandeur scale and challenge and roleplaying as Spartacus...

Stop your hatred people, and the condescending statements are unnecessary. The OP has valid issue he has brought up which can be answered in the most correct of manners. Look at bobbin's answer for prime example.

I kind of have mixed thoughts on it - on the one hand, everyone could have been a bit nicer, but on the other hand, when you're going into a completely new forum/group/whatever, telling people to change things should NOT be the first thing you do. The reaction will very often be fairly similar to the one he got. -M

Yeah, but we must admit that he maybe a complete noob at this forum, just downloaded EB and played it recently... and think that EB is just yesterday's mod...
But when he want to said about that... we scare the hell out of this guy... and he may never come here again...
Sigh... remorse always come out later.... I'm sorry... http://www.cool-emoticons.com/rwx_gallery/EM_Sheep_and_Wolf017.gif

I agree with Vartan. Some of replies here seem to bee pretty snobish imo.

RICHARD III, just enjoy this indescribable mod and and dont let the reactions in the forum keep you awy from playing EB. Maybe put your expectations of a "perfect RTW mod" a bit back. You will understand the decisions about the game mechanics, factions, units etc. the EB team made after a while and might share your fun and questions, you have then, with us fellow eb-fans.
This thread is indeed getting altogether too personal. I've removed the bad posts, as well as one that quoted a bad post, but I see no need to leave this open.
RICHARD III, you have my apologies for your less-than-friendly welcome.
