This is Keiko Koike, live from the DeLaude Hotel, where the press are gathering for a big announcement from the police regarding alleged gang activity here earlier today.

Little seems to have been said thus far, but as far as Five Live News understands the situation, there has been not one, but two murders in the Statesman's Suite!

Wait... here comes one of the police now... hey! HEY, DETECTIVE!

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/Gumshoe.gif
Yeah, pal, I know what you're all sayin'. There's two dead guys upstairs and it's a real bloodbath.

And you know what, pal? This time ol' Gumshoe won't be caught out! Wohohohoho... we've got a solid suspect this time; Madame Elizé Da Silva!

The Game
Participate in a courtroom drama as you try to get to the bottom of the State vs. Da Silva trial, a case where all the evidence points to the defendant but the witnesses say differently!

- Can the city's crime organisation kill the witnesses and ensure the true criminal remains free?
- Will the Prosecution and Defense work together to learn the truth, or try to outdo one another?
- And more importantly, will Gumshoe ever learn to shave?

Rules
The rules are simple:
- The criminal is permitted one kill per evening, and must eliminate three of the four witnesses to the crime to ensure Da Silva is found guilty.
- Both the Prosecution and the Defense need to uncover the true story behind the trial, with varied narrative outcomes dependent on their cooperation and survival or lack thereof.
- As with the Ace Attorney games, there is a limit to the number of days the trial can continue for; should this limit be reached, the Judge will make a decision himself.
- Should the either the Defense or Prosecution be attacked during the night or lynched during the day, the player is out of the game, but a replacement character will be introduced for narrative reasons. Should both be incapacitated, it falls to the witnesses to bring justice to the court. No calling this trial off!

- The mafia wins if they kill/lynch three of the four witnesses.
- The town (everyone else) wins if the mafia is found.
- The Defense and/or Prosecution will recieve a special 'victory' if they are still alive at the end too.

Phases will last for 24 hours, give or take depending on real-life commitments.

The game begins with a Night Phase. Voting occurs during Day Phase, whereby the person with the greatest number of votes is called to the stand and there will be a narrative piece regarding the character they're playing. Voting is as standard (vote: X and unvote, vote: X). Abstaining and No Voting are allowed.

All talking must take part in this thread unless you have been provided with a QuickTopic link in your Role PM, whereby you are permitted to talk there. The arrested/dead are permitted to talk.

Copy/Pasting Role PMs, QuickTopic posts/links or anything else is prohibited, but that goes without saying.

You don't like them?

There're animated rips from the game series themselves; they're taken from the fantastic Court Records fansite, whereby anyone is free to use them as long as they're not hotlinked directly from the site.

So, before I forget, many thanks to Court Records for the images and Capcom for the awesome characters and world they've created.

Inside the DeLaude Hotel's wine cellar, 9:18pm, 8th December 2013.

Gerard Duquesne, long-serving butler at the DeLaude Hotel, is busy rummaging around the wine stacks for a particular vintage:

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/Bellboy.gif
I don't think we even have a '83 Sauvignon... he shall have to settle for a '91.

The gentle clinking of green-hued glass masks the footfalls of the older gentleman who has joined him in the cellar. The man speaks, his voice crisp with an upper-class British accent:

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/BellboyKiller.gif
My dear boy... you ought to be more careful where you go alone in these dark times...

The man discards his tray, raising a pistol at Duquesne; in a single, muffled gunshot, the bellboy crumples to the floor before he could even turn around. The gentlemanly assassin departs as silently as he came, closing the cellar behind him.

You have to vote in the standard format of vote: X or unvote, vote: X.

The calling to the stand is merely a narrative thing; you're essentially voting as you do in a normal mafia game.

And thanks for voting, Beskar, had a feeling people might've forgotten my game :<

You are permitted to vote: no lynch, yes.

I amended the rules because I realised I would screw the town over if they got their lynch wrong; the killer has two witnesses left to get, so could end the game before the next day phase otherwise.

It should balance out my indiscrepancies for the time-being.

Thank you. I think I can write a good story (and it isn't difficult when Capcom made such an amazing world to play with), but I'm not so certain on my ability to host a game, hence why I'm a bit sketchy on rules and stuff. Hoping it works out and I can make more though!

No lynch = Abstain? Ouch. It means we pretty much need to get a first-round lynch.

I would recommend not randomly voting anyone. As we don't want to lose a witness, the defence or the prosecution.

I'm sorry, I mistook myself there. You are permitted to vote: no lynch if you don't wish for a lynch this round. You can also vote: abstain if you wish to forego your vote and allow the others to decide on what happens. I have narrative options to cover my tracks if you guys decide on no lynch for the round, just as I do if you lynched the Defense or Prosecution.

Please bear in mind, however, that the game can only last 120 hours total as a mini-game; it is at this point that the Judge will call a verdict himself.

This actually balances the game out a bit better than I expected. I was worried that the abilities of the Prosecution and Defense would imbalance things, but I realise now that a shrewd mafia will be able to close the case with some very well-planned moves before anyone knows what's going on.

Anyway, I have amended the rules in my very first post, and have also posted the victory parameters just in case anyone was confused.

Basically, it's either a mafia win, a town/lawyer win, a town/Defense win or a town/Prosecution win. I've got some narrative and images lined up to cover all the possibilities, so it's all down to how you guys play now. :3

If the defendant rarely removes her expensive gloves, why would she do so to commit a crime and leave evidence of her presence all over the crime scene? The facts don't add up...

I have just realised that the game may not be as balanced as I previously believed.

I followed a Night-Day-Night-Day-Night format I've often seen utilised, but it doesn't really fit considering the abilities of the special roles as well as the narrative of the Phoenix Wright world in general. I will see how this game pans out, but I do intend to restart it with a Day-Night-Day-Night-Day format to more closely follow the games and ensure that the town (that being the Defense, Prosecution and witnesses) actually has a better chance of winning.

The game'll carry on, just a forewarning that the odds are unintentionally mafia-stacked. Apologies. :3

An interesting set of witness accounts... I think we may have finally gotten to the bottom of this case. Can you summarise for us, Miss Fey?

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/MiaTalky.gif
Of course, your Honour:

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/DoctorFace.png

Firstly we have the account of Dr. Afforme, guest of the DeLaude Hotel and occupier of the closest room to the Statesman's Suite.

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/EdgeworthSpeaking.gif
He noticed a young gentleman walk past the bellboy at his door, and heard gunshots from the Suite within ten minutes of his wine being delivered; he heard the moment of the Ducall's deaths..

Correct. Our second witness is Miss Roberts, the receptionist of the Hotel; she recalled booking a room for Madame Da Silva and a 'M.M', a young gentleman who kept his identity under wraps.

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/ReceptionistFace.png

She assumed he was a musician, correct?

Exactly; she also remarked that she did not see this younger gentleman around when the defendant was arrested by Detective Gumshoe.

She guessed it was publicity reasons, but it is more likely he was trying to avoid being implicated.

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/SecurityFace.png

Our final witness is Mr. Ballaud, security detail for the DeLaude; he saw both the defendant and the mystery gentleman entering the Hotel earlier in the day

He also spotted Madame Da Silva disposing of the murder weapon during the evening, and spefically noted that she was wearing gloves at the time.

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/JudgeYesWai.gif
Thank you, both of you.

Having reviewed both the evidence and the witness testimonies, it has become apparant that we require the truth from the defendant.

I have a question for you, Mr. Edgeworth, if you will?

Why are you working alongside Miss Fey?

This is a court of law, is it not? Your job is to find me guilty, and yet here you are, attempting to prove my innocence?

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/EdgeworthLOL.gif
At first, I would have agreed with you; the evidence pointed towards your guilt, and I was happy with that.

However, as lawyers, our job is merely to find the truth, no matter how painful it may be. I began to have doubts about your guilt, and I believe I was correct.

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/DeeCold.gif
Fascinating... if I wanted to listen to someone waxing philosophically, I would have read some Nietzsche.

As it stands, however, your witnesses are unreliable and do not compare to the strength of the evidence. I am guilty, and you have lost.

That is all.

Madame... I believe it was Nietzsche himself who said that only a coward would acknowledge the existence of all being lost in a battle.

This is a court of law, our battleground, and while evidence does stand it's ground, it is witness testimony that truly fights for justice.

https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac48/Secura87/DeeTalk.gif
Delightful... are you quite finished?

All this talk is pointless; you may have proven through testimony that I am innocent, but you do not have the true killer to charge instead.

With the late arrival of Franziska von Karma, the courts have new information and a new suspect for the murders of the Ducall family; Markus Maroni, de facto leader of the city's largest crime syndicate. While she may have been innocent in killing them, Madame Da Silva's attempts to tamper with evidence and mislead the courts has not been taken lightly, and she will be tried at a later date for these crimes.

Despite the odds and the overwhelming animosity, Mia Fey and Miles Edgeworth have been able to work together to ensure that the State vs. Da Silva trial remained on the true course of justice.

I'm not going to post the Role PMs because there's a liklihood that I'd like to use them (albeit modified) in later games. However, the roles (and their abilities) were as follows:

SplitPersonality - Defense Attorney Mia Fey - Protection
Beskar - Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth - Investigation

Cultured Drizzt fan - Madame Elizé Da Silva - Night Kills, Vote Switching

Methos - Lorna Roberts, Hotel Receptionist
Centurion1 - Eric Ballaud, Hotel Security
A Very Super Market - Dr. Paul Afforme, Hotel Guest
Captain Blackadder - Gerard Duquesne, Hotel Bellboy

For my first game... well, I'm not amazingly optimistic about responses, as I felt that the town/lawyers were very, very lucky to win; I had foolishly stacked things against them.

I realised halfway through the game that a N-D-N-D-N structure heavily favoured a mafia victory; coupled with the vote tampering ability, it basically ensured you only had one window of opportunity to catch CDf. CDf actually requested to use the tampering ability in the second day phase that just passed, but it will only work if the votes are not unanimously against the target; with all five people voting against him, CDf's mafia boss couldn't switch votes, whereas this would've been possible had CDf convinced at least one person not to vote for him. I had planned for the ability to be like this from the start, but was unsure if I had stated as such in the Role PM, so had to remind him this morning via PM. Apologies, Drizzty. :<

The process of actually revealing CDf was down to luck in itself; Beskar and Split (the former knew the latter as he investigated on the first evening, unsure about the reverse though) had debated investigating Methos at first, but Beskar expressed interest in Centurion1. Split said that he felt suspicious also, and then Beskar moved onto CDf and sent orders for his investigation. This investigation would have failed had Beskar not suggested himself to Split for protection overnight.

I'd like to make further games, but I've got alot more planning to do in the future. I believe D-N-D-N-D will work better, both in terms of balance between the mafia and the town and in terms of adhering to the narrative of the Phoenix Wright games themselves. I want to write games that people are interested in and actively debate... it can be difficult to do just that in a seven-man game, and I was hoping that the narrative would drive things to that point.

I'm eager to see how you guys felt, both in terms of the narrative side and the game side of it.

Thank you for playing, at any rate. :3

Also, if they didn't join my bandwagon, you would have won as well. In short, it was just plain luck we, the town, actually won.

Indeed, the rules stated that the game could only last 120 hours total. As happens in the video game series, all trials only last three days total; the Judge automatically calls a verdict should one not be reached through evidence and testimony at that time.

Had the time elapsed and I would've had to end the game, Madame Da Silva would have been declared guilty, as she was meant to be, and CDf would have won that way too.

Being honest, blame Centurion1 for your loss. In a message in Noblesse, he mentioned how you are always his partner and I was wondering about the both of you. Being perfectly honest, I suspected Centurion1 more than you, and Split shared the same feeling.

I decided to investigate you, the idea being "if it isn't CDF, I will say I investigated Centurion1 and lynch him". However, I got the results that you was indeed the one we needed to get rid off.

So ultimately, you can blame Centurion1 for a random comment else where for making me decide to investigate you opposed to him. :beam:

I decided to investigate you, the idea being "if it isn't CDF, I will say I investigated Centurion1 and lynch him"

You'd fit right in with Phoenix Wright... much of his "early-trial game" is spent bluffing to prolong things to another day whereby he can investigate and get his information straight. Very much a case of saying anything to divert the spotlight away from the defendant.

This case was based upon the final trial of Justice For All (the second PW game), whereby Phoenix has to defend Matt Engarde, an actor charged with murdering a rival actor. It transpires that, while he did not murder the victim himself, he hired an mysterious assassin to do so, which in the game's timeline still counts as murder. Having set-up the assassin with evidence of the murder, Engarde is about to be declared Not Guilty, until the assassin states that should Engarde leave the courts, he will be killed. Brutally so. A choice of going to jail or being murdered...

...which is actually one of only two cases where the verdict is not called by the Judge, but the player themselves. I took this notion and made my own story out of it, setting it in a timeline just before Phoenix became an attorney and opting for Mia and Edgeworth as the opposing lawyers. I even included Franziska saving the day, so to speak, which is exactly what happens in the aforementioned trial.

This is pretty much hitting the nail on the head.

The only reason CDf's vote tampering ability would fail was if he (or his target, as it could be used at any time in a day phase to freak you guys out, but would only work once) was unanimously voted for by the rest of the players. I was actually trying to encourage the rest of you to vote (only Beskar, Split and CDf had done so), but if you had not, then the vote tampering would have succeeded and Beskar would have been lynched instead with two votes to one.

Which was essentially a mafia victory.
